My isADoRA-FINDLEY, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Lettere Patent No. 78,367, dated llfay 2G,v 1868; antetlatecl Ilfag/` 15, 1868.
IMPROVED WAHI-BELT 0R GIRDLE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, M. ISADORA FINDLEY, of thc city, county, and State of New York, have invented a. new und useful Improvement in Waist-Belts or Girdles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which-5 Figure 1 represents a. waist-belt in its straight or open condition, constructed according to my improvement,
Figure 2, a view of the same closed, and l .Figure 3, a transverse section thereof.
Figure 4 represents a longitudinal view of a modified construction of the belt at its ends, shown only part, and buckle fastening the same.
l Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
'The nature of my invention consists in constructingmetullic waist-belts or-girdlos for'ladies, childrcns, andther use, with a peculiar mode of fastening the belt :1t-its cndsby means of a. detached buckle-gearing, with perforations in the ends ofthe belt.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, and more particularly figs. l, 2,`and 3, A represents-a metallic belt, of an enamelled character, whereby it may not onlybe used as an ornamental or finished'helt; irrespective of covering, but is free fromvrust, gives a smooth finish, and prevents chaing either as against the dress or ribbon made to encircle it, said metallic belt either being used in u. direct or Vsepa-rate manner, or asa mere.
stilfener to a surrounding belt of ribbonor other like material. The better to prevent chaiing or cutting, I turn downthe edges a a', to'fo'rm horns s, and, furthermore, make the upper edgect of increased length to that of the lower one, whereby n. tit in conformity with the natural sha-pe of the body is secured withouticutting or inconvenient pressure ofsaid upper edge, to further carry .out which advantage or advantages,` especially as regards` the fit and straight run of the belt, when made of a. stiff material like metal, and which dispenseslwith puckering or objectionable elastieity, I prefer to make the beltlstraight for ashort distance, 'atits centre, b-
. to vconform to the spine or straight portion of the back, and straight at its ends c c', with the remainder or counecfing'portions of a curyature `or curvaturos struck from a centre or centres which make the uppr edge d convex, and thelower edge a concave. The belt thus constructed may bc variously fastened, but I select to employa loose sliding buckle, B, provided with button or knob-shaped projections d d, constructedvvto fit and lock with a double-1ow of apertures e e in the one end, e', of the belt, which apertures are arranged in `aseriesi along or near either edge to regulate the ft of the belt to dierent sizes of waist, said end, c', of the belt passing through the slotY of the buckle, and thel button-shaped projections, d, to secureV the lock of the belt, further passing through aperturesff, in the opposite end, c, ofthe buckle. c
In some cases it may be preferred to construct the one end, c, of the belt, as shown iu'ig. 4, with a double set of apertures,f, and the opposite end, c, of the beltwith but a.A single row of apertures, e,while thedetached 'or detachable buckle, Ii, is provided with three knob or button-shaped projections, c2, and the end, c., of the belt tapered or narrowed off to conceal the buckle under the opposite end, when the beltis fastened essentially as described with reference to figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.-
Wha-t I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by ,Letters Patent, is The detached buckle' B, with its knob or' button-shaped projections d, in combination -withthe perforated ends of the belt, for use essentially as shown and described.
' M. ISADORA FINDLEY.
