Description

new egim f Letters Patent No. 102,990, tZated'Ma/y 10, 1870.
IMPRVEMENT 11N SHIRTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari of me same To .all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY VALLACH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a full, clear, 'and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingv drawing forming part of this specification, and which represents a View from the rear of a shirt, with my improvement applied toit. Shirts, as heretofore made, arefvery liable to ,break across their backs. of the material by perspiration, and to stress or strain at such part in putting `the sbirton and o; also, to
the working of the arms or body when at labor, orA
making any violent exertion. 1t also not unfreqneutly happens thatthe material putinto the back is arranged to run, as regards its length or ber, more with regard to economy in ,regard to the product-ion of the shirt thanito its strength. To remedy thisliability of the shirt to vburst or break in the back, without materially addingto the expense ofthe shirt, Iarrange across its back strengthening bands, lthe' same extending from the yoke on opposite sides of the portion which covers or is inline with the nape to the sides of the shirt below the level of the arm-pits, and securely sew the same to the', back piece of the shirt. double thickness of material inthe back throughout the lengths ofthe bands, anda` treble thickness where This is due partly tothe rottingy This l gives a the bands cross cach other, which, by the arrangement as described, is at the weakest point or place in the back. In this way the back is braced without the use of any surpl'us material, anda neator ornamental finish given to the back of the shirt, whieh,`in warm weather, on
the outer garments being removed, is of some value or importance.
In the accompanying drawing- A represents the back; 1 f
B, the yoke; and
C C, thearmsfof theshirt. ,Y
D D are the 4strengthening y'bands hereinbefore rereferred to, arrangedas described, and sewn to the back. Said bauds may either be made of the same or different material from that used for making the back, and are of curvilinear form, to secure to them a flat fit on thev baek,.iu conformity with their arrangement.
They may be made of any desired width'.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, isl
The' arrangement scribed, ot' the strengthening cross-bands D D with the back A ofthe shirt.
