Description

.0- T. GILMAN.
Hammer.
Patented Feb"; 18, 186 2.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
O. T. GILMAN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 34,420, dated February 18, 1862.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, O. T. GILMAN, of VVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, A represents an ordinary hammer with a handle B secured to it in any of the usual ways.
0 represents a claw, which is made about the width of the hammer, and provided with an opening through which the handle of the hammer passes. The claw is then pivoted to the handle, as shown at 00. This claw has a shank which lies close to the hammer-handle, a portion D of said shank being constructed of wood or other suitable material. The claw and other portion of the shank are intended to be made of cast-steel or wrought-iron.
a represents a pin, which is attached to the handle B, and a portion of which slides into an opening in the piece D for securing it to the handle.
It will readily be perceived that the claw 0 forms, in connection with the point of the hammer, a pair of pinehers, which may be opened and closed by moving the shank D. It will also be seen that they form a wrench, as a nut or screw-head may be embraced in the opening formed between the claw and point. Three tools are by this arrangement formed in one-a hammer, pair of pinchers, and a wrench. These tools -being among the most useful known to the mechanic, must of course, when combined in an economical and convenient manner, as is represented, be almosta necessity in every city and farm-house. The three can be afforded for a very little more than the hammer could alone, and then being secured together firmly there is no danger of their being separated and individually lost.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The employment of the claw O in combination with the hammer A for forming three tools in one, substantially as specified.
