Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS B. KELLY, OE HANNONSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, AND L. V. KELLY, OF BRUNSVIOK, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKSMITHS TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,000, dated November 25, 1862.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS B. KELLY, of Ha1inonsburg, in the county of Crawford, State of Pennsylvania, and L. W. KELLY, of Brunswick, in the county of Medina, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and 11nproved Blacksmiths Tool for paring the hoofs of horses before shoeing; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a drawing of our invention with all its parts adjusted in working order.
A A is a stock and handle of brass or iron. At D the handle is flattened out, as shown in the drawing. In and through this part ofthe handle is a slot, F F.
E is a knife-blade sharpened on both edges m and u.
G is a square-headed screw bolt passing through the slot F F, and screwing into the knife-blade E, for the purpose' of securing the knife-blade in the proper position on the handle A A.
H is a pin passing from the vknife-bladeE through the slot F F, to better keep the blade E from turning. The end of the handle at O is bent up somewhat like a letter S.
C is a joint and pin, and B is a claw which catches under the edge of the horses hoof, and
then acts as a fulcrum,77 with A A for a lever, which, by moving back and forth, moves as a matter of course the knife-blade E. By loosening the screw-bolt G, the knife-blade may be set nearer or farther from the fulcrurnjoint O, to suit a smaller or larger hoof. By this construction it will be seen that the knife is operated with a lever force, the hardest hoof by this means paring very easily, while the workman has perfect control of the tool, and may change it from the right to the left side of the hoof at pleasure.
That we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The construction of the handle A A with the slot therein at E E, and claw B, attached thereto by the joint O, in combination with the knife-blade E, when the same are constructed as described7 and for the purposes set forth, and in the aforesaid combination.
