Description

NO. 25,118.l `Patented Aug. 16,' 1859.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. C. HUNT, OF OTTUMVVA, IOWA.
VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,118, dated August 16, 1859i.
To all whom 'it may conccr'n:
Be it known that I, H. O. HUNT, of Ottumwa, in the county of VVapello and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Self-Retaining Bench-Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1, being a side view of said vise, Fig. 2 a section thereof, and Fig. 3 a front view of the same.
Similar letters indicate like parts in each of the drawings.
The body, or hollow base-portion, Z), of my improved vise, which is intended to rest upon a table or bench, (a,) must have a sufficient width to give it a stable seat, and it must have such a length that itwill receive into the eavity within the same, the shank of the sorew f, which operates the movable jaw (Z', of the vise.
The jaw cl, of my improved vise is jointed to the neck c, which rises from the baseportion Z), of said vise. The other jaw d', of said vise is jointed to the curved jawpiece e, whose lower end is of such a shape that it passes around underneath the table or bench upon which the vise is placed a suflicient distance to clamp the vise firmly upon said table during the time that anything is held between the jaws of the same. The said lower portion of the curved jawpiece e, is also of such a shape that the action of the extremity of the same against the under surface of the table, or bench, will preserve the Vertical position of the central portion of said jaw-piece.
An anti-friction roller (g) may be combined with the lower extremity of the jawpiece e, in such a manner that the periphery of said roller will bear against the under surface of the tableas shown in Fig. 2.
The lip which descends vertically from the front end of the body-of the vise, serves the purpose of keeping the vise at the pro er distance from the front edge of the tab e, or bench, which receives the same. An aperture in the lip receives the lower portion of the jaw-piece e, and guides the movements of the same.
By means of a perforated lip h, at the outer extremity of the body of the vise, and a small perforation in the lip a couple of screws may be employed to permanently secure the vise upon a table or bench-as shown in Fig. -whenever it maybe desired to do so.
The head of the screw f, is secured within the aperture in the central portion of the jaw-piece e, by means of the screws j, whose point works in an ann'ular groove in said screw-head. The screw f, works in a screwaperture in the front end of the body of the vise, which aperture opens into the cavity within the said body that receives the shank of the screw-as shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as my inventlon and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Constructing a vise in such a manner that it will self-retain itself upon a table or bench substantially in the manner herein set forth.
The above specification of my improved movable vise, signed and witnessed this sixth day of December 1858.
H. C. HUNT.
