Description
UNITED STATES Prfllili? M. H. RISON, OF PARIS, TENNESSEE.
PHOTOGRAPHC-LATE VISE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No.
To all wiom it may concern:
Be it known that l, M. H. Bison, of Parisa in the county of Henry and State ot Tennessee, have invented a new and uset'ul linproveinent in Photographic- Plate Vises; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear7 and eXact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partot` this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a photographic plate vise, with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same.
Similar letters ot reference denote like parts in bot-h iigures.
This invention consists oit an improved article of manufactureg viz: a photograph vise having its eccentric lever provided with a groove, a clamping jaw provided with a catch to engage the groove, another jaw provided with a spring` pawl which engages with a rack, and otherwise constructed as hereinafter shown and described.
To enable others to make and use my iiivention, I will proceed to describe its construction and Operation.
A, is the bedpiece of the vise, made of wood and having attached to it two side pieces B, B, which contain grooves c, a. in their inner faces to receive tongues b, Zi, formed on the sides of the two aws C, and D. which are fitted to slide between the two side pieces B. B, and which contain rebates c, c, to receive opposite edges of the plate which is represented in red outline.
The jaw C. has attached to it the spring pawl d, which engages with the ratchet e, which is secured to the top ot' the bedpiece A.
The jaw D has attached to it the hooked catch 7, which enters the groove g, in the eccentric lever E, E', which works on a 'tulcruin pin 2'., secured in the bedpiece. The groove is formed by making a recess in the upper part of the eccentric E', which with the handle E of the lever may be made of wood, and securing to said eccentric a plate 7i, which conforms to the circular periphery of the eccentric and constitutes a hook, as shown in Fig. 2, to attach the eccentric to the jaw D, of the catch y. The movement ot 22,748, dated January 25, 1859.
the jaw E, produced by the movement of the ccentric lever should be greater than the width ot the notches of the ratchet c. and the periphery oit the eccentric should have a bearing against the said jaw l).
The operation of the vise is as follows: rlie adjustable aw C, shonld'be moved to a position in which the pawl (Z. is iii the nearest notch o' the ratchet c. which will permit the plate to be received between the jaws C, D. while the clamping` jaw D. is drawn as near as possible to the fiilcruni ot the eccentric lever by the hook 7i. or" th' aid lever. The plate is then placed on the rabbets c. c ot the two jaws. and the lever turned iii a direction to move the clainpine' jaw i), toward the plate till the latt i is clamped tightly between the two jaws. in this condition tlie adjustable jaw is stopped by the pawl and ratchet while the eccentric caused to retain its position and hold the clamping jaw as long as desired by the agency of its friction upon the said piw.
To release the plate. the lever is turned in the opposite direction that the hook il. by its action on the catch ma;Y draw the clamping aw i), toward the fulcruin ot the lever. To adapt the vise to plates of ditterent sir/ies the a l istable jaw C. is moved to bring its pawl into a notch of the ratchet farther ott or nearer to the clamping jaw.
l do not clair-n the use or" an adjustabie jaw and a clamping` jaw, the former stopped by a pawl working in a ratchet in the bedpiece and the latter operated by an eccentric attached to the bedpiece. But
l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improved article ot manufacture:-
A photograph vise having its eccentric lever ll provided with a groove :i
LJ. clamping jaw D. provided with a catch (7' to engage a `iaw C, provided witl a spring pawl (d), which engages a rack (eli and otherwise constructed as herein shown and described.
