Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BRADFORD ROWE, OF ALBANY, NEV YORK.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,7 79, dated April 29, 1856.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, BRADFORD RowE, of the city of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of Constructing Wrenches; and I declare the following specification, with the dra-wings accompanying as a part thereof, t0 be a full and complete description of the same.
Figure l represents a perspective view of the wrench; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through its center, with the lower jaw in full; Fig. 3 represents a cross section at v -y; Fig. 4 a cross section at c, d.
Similar letters refer to same parts in both figures.
The wrench consists of a head jaw A united to two side pieces B and C and bottom K which extend its whole length with parallel and similar faces inside, the outside being conformed to the usual shape of wrenches as shown by the drawing. Between these faces lies the inner jaw D which is kept in place by lateral tongues e and f fitting into corresponding grooves cut in the side pieces. It has a recess j-c-L-m (Fig. 2) sunk into it for the purpose of receiving an endless screw E which is pivoted longitudinally within the recess, its'threads catching in appropriate niches a, a, a, being portions of a female screw made in the upper angles of the side pieces, so that by I the revolutions of E, the jaw D can be moved to and from A. The screw E is operated by a bevel wheel p at its back eXtremity gearing into a horizont-al bevel wheel. Thumb piece r pivoted upon the rear limb of D. To complet-e the handle a piece of wood WV is inserted between the side pieces B and C after the parts are all fitted in place and secured by rivets through the side pieces.
The advantage of this form of construction is, that the j aw D which in every form of wrench now used is weakened by openings cut therein for the insertion of a central square bar on which the jaw is to slide, or for the insertion of a large endless screen operated by the handle of the wrench of which it forms a part, is solid and firm.
1. The solid movable jaw sliding between the Iparallel side pieces to which the fixed end jaw is attached substantially as set forth in the within specification.
2. I claim the level wheel and screw gearing to move the jaw, in combination with the solid movable jaw substantially as set forth in the wit-hin specification.
BRADFORD ROWE.
