UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM GRAY VIALL, OF NORTH ADAMS, MASSAGHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,677, dated May 14, 1878; application filed March 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. VIALL, of North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shoe, illustrating my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the parts of the upper of the same.
The object of this invention is to furnish shoes which shall be so constructed as to have no seams across the upper or up the back of the shoe to hurt the feet of the wearer and to rip, and which, at the same time, shall be simple in construction, neat in appearance, and comfortable in use.
The invention consists in a shoe the upper of which is made in two pieces, the ramps bein g out in one piece with the tongue, and with rearwardly-proj ecting points, and the quarters being cut in one piece, with deep side slits to receive the points of the Vamps, as hereinafter fully described.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the Vamps of the shoe, which are cut in one piece with the tongue at, and with rearwardly-proj ectin g points 0. upon their rear sides.
B are the quarters, which are cut in one piece, and are out with deep slits b in their lower forward sides to receive the points a of the Vamps A, as shown in Fig. 1.
By this construction the quarters can be drawn in so as to fit the rear part of the foot I am aware that it is not new to make a balmoral or laced boot in a manner somewhat similar to mine; but the tongues require to be sewed on afterward, while mine are made in one piece with the vamp, and, instead of putting the ourvature all in one place, mine is gradual, so that the shoe will better conform to the natural contour of the leg.
I am also aware that an upper having the tongue out integral with the vamp, and one having rearwardly-projecting points, is not broadly new; but my vamp-points, being fitted to the quarteron a curve, give elasticity to the back of the quarter.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A shoe-upper which is made in two pieces, the Vamps A being out in one piece with the tongue at, and with rearwardlyprojecting points a and the quarters being cut in one piece, with deep side slits b to receive the points a? of the Vamps A, substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM G. VIALL.
