Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE' GEORGE H. BROCKMAN, OF FORT JENNINGS, OHIO.
FELT BooT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,295, dated September 21, 1897.
I Application filed May 26, 1896. Serial No. 593,145. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BROCKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Jennings, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Felt Boot, of which the following isaspecification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of foot-coveringknown as felt boots, and the purpose of the invention is to construct foot-gear of this character which will keep the feet warm and dry and be comfortable and obviate gathering or puckering at the heel.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The improvement consists, essentially, of the novel details and structural features which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a felt boot constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the moccasin or protector for strengthening and reinforcing the lower portion of the boot. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the foot portion of the boot about on the line X X of Fig. 1, looking toward the toe. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the lower portion of the boot having the moccasin or protector in position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in the several views of the drawings by the same reference-characters.
The boot comprises a stocking 1 and a moccasin or protector 2, the stocking portion 1 being of felt or woven or knitted and fulled, so as to secure the requisite thickness essential to felt boots or foot-gear of the character to which the present invention belongs.
The moccasin or protector is formed of similar side pieces 3,which are stitched together at their ends, corresponding to the front and back of the boot, and a sole portion 4, the lower edges of the upper formed by the'side pieces 3 being deflected outwardly and stitched to the edges of the sole 4, whereby an outer flange is provided at the sole of theboot. The front portion of each side piece is widened, so that unitedly the two widened portions will provide a toe-cap to the boot, as shown. The rear end portion of each side piece is extended so as unitedly to form a counter 5 at the rear of the boot. The side pieces 3 and soled are constructed of light leather such as usually employed in the uppers of boots and shoes, or they may be formed of any stout material which will afford protection to the lower portion of the felt stocking and exclude Wet and prevent injury to the foot. A heel-piece 6 is secured to the rear end of the sole 4 to resist and sustain wear.
In assembling the parts the foot portion of the stocking is fitted within the moccasin or protector and is secured in place by stitching the top edge portion of the moccasin or protector thereto. Y To prevent puckeringor wrinkling of the heel of the stocking, a row of stitching 7, corresponding to the front end of the heel-piece 6, is resorted to and connects the sole portion of the stocking, the sole 4, and the front end of the heel 6 together. Thus in pulling on or off the boot the foot portion of the stocking will be held close to the sole of the moccasin or protector. A strap 8 is secured at one end to the upper portion of the stocking and is provided with a buckle and is adapted to gather and hold the upper end of the stocking or boot close about the limb. 1
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The herein-described combined shoe and stocking comprising the felted stocking 1, provided with a strap and buckle at its upper end, the leather shoe 2, consisting of the two side pieces 3, 3, stitched together at the toe and heel portions, and the leather sole 4 and heel 6 stitched thereto, the shoe being stitched along its upper edge to the stocking, and a line of stitching 7 extending transversely near the heel-breast line for securing the stocking to the sole and to prevent rumpling of the stocking, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto fixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEO. II. BROGKMAN.
