LOCK PROTECTING DEVICE Filed April 21, 1931 3, Zak/ 717a 797 0 Inventor fl Home y Patented June 14, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
RUSSELL WALLACE KIRKPATRICK, F ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HUGO V. MEYER, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA LOCK PROTECTING DEVICE Application filed April 21,
This invention relates to a lock protecting device which is mainly designed for protectin the locks on doors and the like, the general ob ect of the invention being to provide an angle shaped member for fitting over the outer face of the door engaging edge of the stop strip of a door frame adjacent the keeper member so as to prevent the door stop from being damaged at this point in an attempt to reach the bolt of the lock to retract the same and to prevent the door from being pried away from the door jamb at the lock in an attempt to open the door.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide an edge member on the device which enters the jamb adjacent the stop strip to prevent a tool or other object from being passed under the strip in an attempt to retract the bolt.
A further object of the invention is to provide ears on the device which are fastened to that part of the jamb which is covered by the edge of the door, when the same is in closed position, so that the device cannot be removed in an attempt to open the door.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in 90 the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a face view of a portion of a door frame showing the invention in use.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 4 is an end view thereof.
In this drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the device which is of angle shape in cross section and has one member thereof countersunk into the stop strip A of the door frame, the member being of such a length as to extend beyond the keeper member B on the frame. The other member of the device engages that edge of the strip A which is en- VO gaged by the door and this member is ex- 1931. Serial No. 531,813.
6 pass through countersunk holes 7 in the de- 7 vice and into the strip A to fasten the device to the strip.
From the foregoing, it will be seen, that the device has one part countersunk in the outer face of the strip A and another part extending along the door engaging edge of the strip with the outer edge of the part penetrating the jamb to a distance well below the inner face of the strip. It will also be seen that the ears A are counter-sunk in that part of the jamb which is covered by the edge of the door when the same is in closed position, so that the screws 5 passing through said ears are inaccessible when the 1* door is closed.
Thus, as before stated, the stop strip A adj acent the keeper member B on the latch of the door cannot be injured or damaged in an attempt to retract the bolt of the lock andthe device also prevents the door from being pried away from the jamb by a tool in an attempt to withdraw the bolt from the keeper member.
As the extended edge 2 enters the j amb a tool cannot be passed under the strip A in an attempt to reach the bolt of the lock.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is In combination with a door frame having a keeper member thereon and including a stop strip, an elongated angle-shaped mem-;
her having one part counter-sunk in the outer face of the strip and the other part engaging the inner edge of the strip, said member being located adjacent the keeper member and projecting beyond the ends thereof, that part of the member which engages the edge of the strip being out adjacent its ends, and the parts between the cuts and the ends being bent at right angles to form ears which are provided with holes for receiving fastening means which penetrate that side of the frame which is covered by the door when the same is in closed position, the part of the member which engages the side of the strip and which is located between the ears having its free edge beveled for penetrating the jamb at the inner edge of the stop strip.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature;
RUSSELL WALLACE KIRKPATRICK.
