My inventionrelates to fastenersfor closures, and more particularly to improvements in hasps and keepers therefor.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an efiicient, theft-proof hasp and keeper adapted to compensate for sagging of structure to which the same are attached and which are comparatively simple in construction, easy to apply, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements; will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reference to the drawings accompanyin and forming part of this specification.

Figure 4 is a view in front elevation of a modified embodiment of hasp,

Figure 6 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 6-6 ofFigure 4.
Reference being had to the drawings by numerals, and first to Figures 1 to 3 thereof, my improved fastener, in the illustrated preferred embodiment thereof, comprises a hasp I, and a keeper 2 for attachment, as presently described, to a door 3, and a door frame structure 4, or the like.
The hasp I comprises a pair of long and relatively shorter hasp leaves 5, 6 hinged together, as at I, at one end thereof, for attachment of the short leaf 6 to the door 3, as by screws 8, so that the long leaf 5 may be swung into closing position with its free end portion overlapping the frame structure 4 and said leaf overlying the leaf 6 and thereby preventing access to the screws 8. The free end portion of the leaf 5 is provided with the usual longitudinally extending slot 9 therein.
The keeper 2 comprises a pair of elongated hinge leaves I 0, II hinged together, as at I2, at one end thereof, to arrange the leaf II in front of the leaf I in overlying position relative thereto. The leaves I0, II are adapted to be attached to the frame structure 4 to extend endwise vertically of said structure with the hasp leaf overlying the leaves III, II substantially midway of the ends of the same. For attaching the leaves III, II to the frame structure 4, screws 1 Claim. An eye' member I5 for extension through the, slot 9 is mountedin the leaves III, II for vertical sliding movement and rotation therein, said member I5 having a-shank I6 extended through registering slots 11, I8 provided in the leaves III, II respectively, to extend lengthwise thereof in the longitudinal center of the" same. A washer I9 is provided on'the shank I3 in the rear of the leaf IIJ with'said shank upset, as at 20, against the washer, and whereby the eye member is secured in said leaves I0, II. The leaf I0 is provided with a forwardly offset intermediate portion 2| spaced from the frame structure 4 to provide clearance for the washer I9 so that said washer may slide freely behind said leaf I0. As will be seen, the eye member I5 and washer I9 form a sliding lock preventing separation of the leaves II], II,
The manner in which the described embodiment of the invention is adapted to be used and to operate will be generally understood from the foregoing description. Sufiice it to explain that if either door 3 or frame structure 4 sags, the slot 9 of the hasp leaf 5 may be accurately registered with the eye member I5 by sliding said member vertically, and appropriately rotating said member. Since, as shown, in the drawings, the slots I I, I8 are arranged crosswise of the slot 9, the eye member I5 may be rotated into a position intermediate said slot to latch the hasp leaf 5 in case the usual padlock, not shown, is

In the modified embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 4 to 6, the hasp comprises a long leaf 22 hinged, as at 23, to a short leaf 24, the long leaf 22 having the usual longitudinal slot 25 in the free end thereof for the insertion therethrough of the usual staples 26 attached to the door frame structure 21 by means of a base plate 23 and screws 29. The hasp is secured to the door 30 for vertical sliding movement and limited vertical swinging movement relative thereto and by the following means. The short hasp leaf 24 is provided with an intermediate transversely extending bend 3| whereby said leaf is provided with a free end portion 32 offset rearwardly of the remainder of said leaf. The side edges of said leaf 24 are notched, as at 33, in line with the bend 3I to reduce the length of the bend for a. purpose presently apparent. An elongated BEST AVAILABLE COPY mounting plate 34 is provided for attachment to the door 30 to extend endwise vertically. Screws 35 secure the end portions of said plate 34 to said door. Intermediate said end portions, the plate 34 is provided with a vertically extending slot 36 and is bent to provide a forwardly offset portion 31 spaced forwardly of the door 30.
