To all fr0/tom, t may concern Be it known that I, Groen R. MoILnoY,

4of Covington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Safes or Fastenings; and l do hereby de@ clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part thereof, in whioh- Figure l, represents a view from one side of the main plate that forms the safe. Fig. 2, represents a view from the opposite side of the main plate, showing the button and catches. Fig. 3, represents on an enlarged scale, the button and catches separated from their plate. Fig. 4, represents one of the but-tons detached.

Similar letters of reference where they occur in the separate gures, denote like parts of the invention.

The object of my invention is to make a light, but strong pocket safe, for securing the entrance to pockets, that will be easily opened by the owner, but proof against those not familiar with the place, or manner, in which itis opened. And my invention consists in a device for this purpose, viz: the holding of the shank, .of a double headed button (which is the hasp) between a horizontal spring, and a cam on a vertical spring, so that both the parts which `hold the button when the safe is locked, shall act, when the bolt or cord is drawn, to throw the button out of its catches, and thus not only release the button, but spring open the pocket.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.

A, represents the main plate of the safe, it having a back which when screwed to it, not only clamps the cloth between them, but incases the catches or lock part of the safe.

B, are holes through said main plate for the button C, Fig. 4, to pass through.

On the back or inside of the plate (as shown in Figs. 2, 3,) are horizontal springs a', c, and vertical springs Z), the latter having cam catches c, c, upon them. A rod d, passes through the lower ends of the vertical springs, with knobs or stops on it, that take against each of the series of springs when more than one is used. The buttons C, are secured to one side of the mouth of the pocket, and the plate A, with its parts to the other side of the mouth of the pocket. The buttons, are inserted in the holes B and then pressed downward, until their shanks are caught (as shown in Fig. 3) between the spring a and cam c. 'In

this position the pocket is locked. From the rod d, a cord e, may extend to any secret place only knownto the wearer. By drawing this cord the cams are drawn away from the shanks of the button, and the springs a, ci, which were compressed, throw up the buttons. Now, release the cord, and the cams c, c, pass under the shanks of the buttons, raising them up opposite the holes B, from whence they readily pass out, and the safe 1s open.

Having thus fully described the nature of my invention what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s i `Holding the shank of the button between the horizontal spring a, and the cam c on the vertical spring,so that by drawing, and letting go the rod CZ, the said shank will be raised up by the horizontal spring, and the cam passing under it, throw it out of the hasp part, as herein set forth, and this l claim whether one, two, or more buttons be used, so long as the series is thrown out by one operation of the rod, as described.
