Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL GREEN, OE LAMBERTVILLE, NEW' JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO S. GREEN AND C.
ARNETT.
WINDOW-SHUTTER BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 2'25 may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL GREEN, of the town of Lar'bertville, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolts or Locks for Fastening lWindow Shutters, Doors, &c., which I call the Double Self-Locking Bolt and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is ay perspective view of the bolt. Figs. 2, 8 and 4 are sectional views, with the top or front of the case removed thereby presenting the several parts to view; Fig. 2 representing the instrument fully or doubly locked; Fig. 3 representing it with one stop (the spring) unlocked, and the bolt pressed back until arrested by the other stop to wit, the drop bolt, and Fig. 4 representing it entirely unlocked, and the main bolt withdrawn, or pressed quite back.
0f the several figures, A A is the case or frame inclosing the main bolt, together with the spring and drop bolt or tumbler, and through which the said parts pass and repass when being locked or unlocked.
B B is the main bolt.
C C isja slit or aperture in the top or front of the case (seen only in Fig. l) through which a rim or knob D is inserted in the main bolt, for the purpose of moving and removing it by the pressure of the hand.
E is the portion of the case or frame (separate from the part- A A) to receive the end of the bolt when locked.
F is a spring with one end inserted in the main bolt, and the other end falling below it,
`so as to act as a stop, by striking against a shoulder 1n the case at Gr.
H is a drop bolt or tumbler fitted loosely into a vertical groove in the back part of the main bolt and lock of the spring, and there- 10,220, dated November 8, 1853.
fore not in sight, even when the top or front of the case is removed, except the small part of it falling below the spring into its place l by pressing the hand against the pin or knob D until the bolt is fully extended, at which point, both the spring and drop bolt or tuniblers fall into their places in the notch in the case, and act as stops. To unlock the bolt the key is inserted with one handwithin the top plate or front of the case, but held back against it, while it is turned so far as to lift the end of the spring sufficiently out of its place, while with the other hand, the operator presses the bolt back so far that the end of the spring shall rest upon the part of the case just beyond the notch, and until the drop bolt striking against the shoulder at t-he end of the notch, presents the further movement of the main bolt. The key is then pressed in to the bottom of its cell, to act against the drop bolt instead of the spring, and being further turned, raises the drop bolt out of the notch in the case, at which time, with the hand still upon the knob, the operator presses the main bolt back to its place in the case.
W'hat I claim as my invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The spring and drop bolt or tumbler arranged with reference to each other, and the notch in the case as described, and so formed and located that they may be acted upon in the manner described by a single key.
