IMPROVEMENT IN GAGE QUILTERS AND CORDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,458, dated March 30, 1875; application filed February 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoRe-E VINcENT, of Stockton, San Joaquin county, State of California, have invented a Gage Quilter and Corder; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention, without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to a novel attachment for sewing-machines; and it consists in the co mbination with a plate secured to the presserfoot of a sewing-machine, of a movable gage, which is made adjustable in a slot in this plate, so that it can be instantly set at any point, or reversed to work from the opposite side.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a presserfoot with my gage attached. Fig. 2 shows the plate detached.
A is the presser-foot of a sewing-machine, having the plate B secured to it, as describedthat is to say, by having a square shoulder, a, to prevent slipping, and fastening B to A with the screw 1). This plate B extends forward to the toe of the presser-foot, and has a slot, 0, made through it transversely to its length. Through this slot the gage-bar D passes, and the elasticity of the plate B will be sufficient to retain the bar in its place by its friction against the bottom of the presserfoot. At one end of the bar D I make a gageplate or marker, 6. It will be seen that by setting this marker at a point equal to the width of any tuck or line of quilting from the needle, it will serve as a guide to work by until (as in quilting) the work has accumulated to such an extent as to be in the way beneath the arm of the machine. The bar D is then simply withdrawn and inserted from the opposite side of the slot 0, so that the marker stands at the other side of the presserfoot, when the work of quilting may be continued by turning the work around, and I can thus do double the amount that can be done in any other way. If the device is to be used us a corder it will only be necessary to set the marker close to the line of the cord, and as the plate B is slightly beveled at the side where the needle passes through, it will be seen that the cord will be held in a sort of a groove, between the edge of the plate and the guide, while the needle passes down close to it upon the other side, and thus makes an even and finished job. By moving the guide farther from the plate a longer cord can be received, and the corder thus becomes universal.

The gage-bar D, with its marker 0, in combination with the plate B, slotted at 0 and secured to the heel of the presser-foot, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
