Description
G. E. RICE.
- HEMMER FOR SEWING MACHINES.
Patented Feb. 14, 1882.
I Vifheesses:
, r 0 t L H I N PETERS Phmo-mmm her. Washington. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. RICE, OF OWENSBOROUGEL ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN G. SCHRADER, OF DAVIESS COUNTY, KENTUGKY.
HEMMER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,766, dated February 14, 1882.
Application filed October 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. RIcE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owensborough, county of Daviess, and State ofKentueky, have invented a. new and useful lmprovement in Sewing-Machine-Hemmer At tachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to heinmers for sewingmachines, and is so arranged in parts that it can be attached to any machine and produce a hem of any desired width. 1 attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the two plates and connecting means. Fig. 3 is a section through the thumb screw, shank, and upper plate. Fig. 4 is a side view ot'the slotted attachment-bar. Fig. 5 is a perspective of my hemmer and attachment-bar. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In theaccompanyingdrawings,Aisathumbscrew attached to the threaded shank or standard h. B is the under plate. is the fabricpresser, that passes partly under the front end of the presser-foot of the machine. E is the forward bent end of the under plate, B
which is designed to turn under the edge of the fabric passing through it. H is the longitudinal slot in the extension l of the upper plate, 1?. L is a slotted bar, held to the hemmer by the thumb-screw A. By means ofsaid bar the device is attached to the machine. P is the upper plate, one endof which is turned under the ear E on the under plate, B. P is the rear extension of the upper plate, P. Tis
a graduated scale on the extension P ot the plate P.
In the small letters, (6 is a slot through the vertical center piece in the under plate, 15. c is the lapped end of the tongue t, which passes through a slot in the vertical portion of the bar P. Said end is soldered and fixed thereto. 12
is the tongue, fixed at e, passing through the slot a in the bar B, and holds the semicircularguide 9. f is the slot in the bar L. h is the screw-shank, over which the cap or thumbo screw fits. m is a strap, termed from metal, lapped over from the under plate, B. Said strap encircles the rear extension, P, of. the upper plate,'P.
This hemmer can be firmly attaclu d to any machine by means of the slotted bar L and thumb-screw A. The slotted bar is designed to connect with a thumb-screw or attachment device of a sewing-machine.
By constructing my hemmer in two piecesl am enabled to produce a hem of any width, by reason of the two parts being adjustably attached, one over the other. They connect at the thumb-screw by means ot'the strap m, which forms an adjustable slide on the graduated 6; scaleT. Bymovingthe strapmoversaid scale L the width of the hem is varied, so as to suit the convenience of the operator.
Havingthus described *myinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A hemmer fora sewing-machine, consisting essentially of the plate B, having the bent end or ear E, presser O, screw-shank h, and strap m, in combination with the plate P, havingslotted extension P, provided with a gradu- 7 a'ted scale, T, and tongue i, having guide g, substantially as described.
2. A hemmer for a sewing-machine, consisting of the plate B,h avingbent end E, presser O, screw-shank h, and strap m, also the plate I, having slotted extension P, provided with a graduatedscale, T, and tongue 0 having guide g, in combination with the thumb-screw A and slotted barL,substantially asde'seri'bed, and for the purposes set forth.
CHARLES E. RICE.
