SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,970, dated July 10, 1883.

Be it knownthat I, ELIAL MrSTArLEs, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cutting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in a thread-cutting device appliedto sewing-machines; and it consists of a slot in the thimble end of the presser-foot, in combination with the lower end of the presser-bar, all of which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to make a thread-cutter, applicable alike to all kinds of sewing-machines, that shall be more simple, convenient, and durable in use and of less cost in construction than devices for a similar purpose heretofore in use.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a presser-bar and presser-foot, Fig. 2 is anenlarged vertical sectional view of a resser-bar and presser-foot, showing one portion of my de vice. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section of apresser-bar and a presser-foot, showing a.

slot, in combination with a recess inside of the thimble of said presser-foot, produced by making the presser-bar slightly tapering at and near the end.

In the drawings, A represents a presserfoot; a, the thimble end of the presserfoot, and B the presser-bar, passing through the thimble c and securely fastened by the small screw-bolt c. On the lower edge of said thimble, at C, is shown a slot in and running obliquely through one side of the end of the thimble, another view of which is shown in Fig. 3 at C. 'lhepresser-barBis made slightly tapering at the lower end, as shown in Fig. 2 at c, and when in its position in the thimble a will form, in combination with the sides of the bore of the thimble, a small angular recess, as shown at c, Fig. 2. I do not limit myself to making said recess by tapering said bar, as aforesaid. Said recess can be made by enlarging the lower end of the bore of said thimble.

The operation of my device is as follows: YVhen it is desired to use the cutting device,

| the thread or threads are drawn into the slot- O, with the ends attached to the work uppermost, when said thread or threads, coming in contact with the cutting-edge 0, formed by the upper end of the slot 0, are severed and the work left free, while the ends attached to the machine are drawn by the slight pressure required to accomplish the cutting into the V- shaped recess a, and are there held in position for again commencing work on the machine. As soon, however, as the work, in feeding back, draws slightly on the threads, iaid threads are thereby disengaged and left ree.

I do not limit the device tothe presser-bar. It is equally applicable to a hemmer, corder, and all of the attachments to a sewing-machine that take the place of a presser-foot in the various kinds oi work done on asewing-machine; nor do I'limit the device to the exact position shown, as the device is applicable to various other positions and places. I

What I claim is- 1. Athread-cutter for sewi ng-machines, consisting of a slot formed in the thimble of the presser-foot, and adapted to cut the thread or threads and hold that portion of the latter which is secured to the machine, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a presser-bar, of a presser-foot whose thimble is provided with a thread-cutting slot connecting with a recess formed between the lower end ofsaid bar and thebore of the thimble, substantially as vided with a thread-cutting slot, said bar and,

thimble being so constructed as to form a V- shaped recess between them, substantially as set forth.
