WILLIAM E. COURTNEY, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, .ASSIGNOR TO MINNEAPOLIS BEDDING COMIANY, 0F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, A CORPORATION.
HOSPITAL-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jul 16,1912.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. COURT- NEY, of Minneapolis, I-Iennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hospital-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a hospital bed of compact, durable construction, which is capable of being easily moved from place to place and can be easily and quickly adapted for use as a reclining chair.
A further object is to provide a construction of'bed which will allow the legs to be arranged nearer together than usual in a bed, to render it more convenient for use as a chair, the legs being separated only about the distance between the legs of a large chair.
The invention consists generally in vari ous constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bed ready for use, Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating the apparatus adapted for use as a reclining chair, Fig. is a top view showing the fabric of the bed, for raising the hinged head portion of the bed frame, Fig. 4: is a detail view illustrating the mechanism for raising and lowering the forward section of the bed. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line XX of Fig. 4.
In the drawing, 2 represents the frame of the bed provided with cross braces 3 and forward and rear legs 4 and 5. These legs have braces 6 connecting them with the middle portion of the frame,
7 is a section forming, when in a horizontal position, a continuation of the bed frame and pivoted at S thereto and adapted, when horizontally adjusted, to extend a considerable distance beyond the head of the frame 2 and forming a support for the forward portion of the mattress and the head of the person lying thereon. When this section is lowered or adjusted to a horizontal position and the rear section, to be hereinafter referred to, is also adjusted, the apparatus will correspond in length to an ordinary bed and be ready to receive the mattress and bedding. A head frame 9 is provided with lugs 10 pivoted at 11 on the outer end of the section 7 and links 12 connect the lower end of the frame 9 with brackets 28 on the frame 2 near the pivots 8. hen, therefore, the section 7 is raised or lowered and the frame 9 is moved with it, the latter will always maintain a vertical position so that the pillows and bedding will not be displaced. This will be due to the parallel link motion obtainedthrough the use of the links 12 and their connections. For the purpose of raising and lowering the section 7 I provide a quadrant 13 secured at one end of the frame 7 and depending therefrom and meshing with a screw 1 f that has hearings in a bracket 15, which is secured to the underside of the frame 2. A beveled gear 16 is mount ed on the lower end of the screw and meshes 'with a gear 17 on a shaft 18 which has a squared end to receive an operating crank 19. The use of this crank permits the convenient raising and lowering of the frame 7 and the screw serves as a lock to support the frame at any desired angle, no other locking device being necessary. The operator simply revolves the shaft until the frame is at the desired angle, the crank is then released and the frame will remain in the adjusted posi' tion until further adjustment is desired.
At the rear end of the bed is a frame 20 pivoted at 21 on the main frame and forming a foot rest or support and having braces 22 pivoted at one end of the section 20 and provided with a series of notches 23 which engage with books 24 on the legs 5. The braces 22 are preferably carried by a shaft 25 which is provided with an operating handle 26 to allow the braces to be tilted and disengaged from the hooks without the necessity of stoopmg or reaching below the level of the bed. The legs are provided with comparatively large, rubber tired caster wheels 27, which permit the device to be easily moved from place to place in a room or from one room to another.
I claim as my invention:
A hospital bed comprising a frame and legs therefor, a forward section hinged at its lower end on said frame and adapted to form a horizontal continuation of said frame or be swung upwardly at an angle to said frame, a head frame having its lower portion pivotally connected with the upper end of said forward section and adapted to form a support for the pillows of the bed, links pivotally connected at their right throughout the travel of said forward 10 upper ends to the lower end of said head section,
frame and pivotally connected with said bed In witness whereof, I have hereunto set frame at their lower ends, said links being my hand this 28 day of October 1909.
5 parallel with said forward section and T spaced therefrom and forming therewith a WVILLIABI COURTLEY' parallel link movement, whereby when said -lVitnesses: forward section is raised or lowered, said L. C. CRONEN, head frame will remain substantially up J. A. BYINGTON.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
