SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,308, dated October 9, 1900. Application filed November 27, 1899. Serial No. 738,499. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, JOHN A. LEMMONS, a resident of Anderson, and JOHN J. HUBBARTT and EMANUEL O. RUMMELL, residents of Ingalls, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Beds; and we do declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact de- IO scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings-,and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectionof same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of same.

This invention has relation to couchesor bedsteads for sick, injured, and unconscious persons, and is designed to provide'a couch or bedstead of this character wherein the oc cupant may receive the attention required by z 5 the calls of nature without the necessity for lifting, handling, or otherwise seriously disturbing him.

With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and

pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,

the letter A designates the frame of the couch I or bedstead, which, aside from the attachments and modifications required for the same, as hereinafter described, may be of any suitable construction.

The head portion C of the mattress is secured to a supplemental frame A, pivoted to the inner faces of the side rails of the main frame at a and adapted when in horizontal position to lie within said side rails, being supported by cross bars or rods a or other suitable supports. Connected to the under or rear side of thiss'upplemental frame are curved rack-bars E, suitably connected and braced atE, and whose slotted lower ends rest on the transverse portions of a bail F, pivoted on the under side of the frame A and having an operating-crank F.

G is a transverse pawl rod or bar, which is designed to engage the teeth 6 of both rackbars for the purpose .of holding the supplemental frame at any desired angle of eleva tion. The ends of this rod or bar are held in keepers'or'guides g on the frame A, which permit it to move toand from the rack-bars. ,It is normally held in engagement therewith by means of springs G.

H is a bail, which is pivoted in the side-bars of-the frame A, adjacent to the bar or rod G, .to which. it is connected at each end by means of short links H. Said bail has a crank H, by the operation of which it can be moved to withdraw. the pawl 110d or bar from engage- 8o ment with the rack-bars, and thereby permit the head-rest to be lowered.

I designates a trap or drop hinged at t' and arranged to. normally close the opening (1 above described. --It is provided on its upper side with a cushion or mattress I, which completely fills said opening 0 J is a rocker-shaft supported in'suitable bearings] on ,the under side of the frame A, adjacent to the hinged edge of the trap or drop I, and which has a crank-arm J, which loosely engages a loop J 2 on the under side of the trap or drop. One-end of said shaft is extended laterally and provided with a crank J 3, by the operation of which the trap or drop 5 may be opened and closed.

K is'a pivoted locking-rod for securing the drop in raised or closed position.

L is a small crane swung from a bracket M,

secured to the under side of the frame Aand I00,

free to swing under and from under the bed. The end portion of the crane-arm carries a small table or platform N, whose post or standard N is seated loosely in and through an aperture in said arm to thereby permit vertical movement of the table.

0 is a lever which is pivoted to the crane 0. One arm of this lever bears against the lower end of the post or standard N. To its other arm is connected one end of a coiled spring P, which acts to raise the opposite end of said lever to thereby raise the table or platform N. The lever is, however, normally held against such movement by means of a locking-pin p.

R is a rod pivoted at one end to one side of the drop-frame and having at its other end a hook a, which is designed to engage an eye a" on the crane L. By reason of this connection when the rocker-shaft J is operated to lower the trap or drop the crane-arm, which is normally swung back in transverse position under the bed, is swung forwardly or outwardly, thereby bringing its platform or table underneath the opening (I S is a pivoted rod, whose inner end when moved in one direction engages the rod R to raise it from engagement with the eye '7", and thereby permit the crane an independent movement, whereby it can be swung out from under the bed.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing. The head-rest can be raised to the proper angle to bring the occupant of the couch or bed to a more comfortable position, or if too ill for this he may be left in a horizontal position. The commode or similar vessel is placed on the platform N, and when necessary the trap or drop is lowered, thereby swinging the crane and vessel into position. The pin p is then released, thereby elevating the platform and vessel to the opening (1.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a bed or couch having a hinged or drop section, and means for raising and lowering the same, of a crane pivoted to the bed or couch frame to swing underneath the opening formed by the drop or trap when lowered, a vertically-movable platform or table carried by the crane-arm, and having a downward extension working in guides of said arm, a spring-actuated vertically-operating lever engaging the lower extremity of said extension, for operating said platform or table, and means for locking said lever out of operation, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a bed or couch having a vertically-swinging drop-section,and means for raising and lowering the same, of a crane pivoted to the frame of the bed or couch to swing horizontally thereunder, and a connection between said crane and the trap or drop whereby upon downward movement of said drop-section, said crane is swung horizontally, substantially as specified.

3. The combination with a bed or couch having a vertically-swinging drop or trap section and means for raising and lowering the same, of the pivoted horizontally-swinging crane, the rod connecting said crane with the drop or trap, to swing said crane horizontally upon downward movement of said trap and means for disconnecting said rod from one of the parts which it connects, substantially as specified.

4. The combination with a bed or couch having a vertically-swinging drop or trap section, the cranked rocker-shaft for operating the same, and means for holding the said section closed, of the pivoted horizontally-swinging crane, the rod connected to said section at one end, and to the crane at its opposite end, to swing said crane horizontally upon downward movement of said trap-section and the pivoted rod for effecting a disconnection of the first-named rod from the crane, substantially as specified.

5. The combination with a bed or couch having a trap or drop section, of the crane pivoted to the bed or couch frame to swing thereunder, the vertically-movable platform carried by the said crane, and having a downward extension working in guides of said crane, the pivoted spring-actuated lever engaging the lower extremity of said downward extension for raising said platform, andthe locking-pin for said lever, substantially as specified.
