TABLE FOR GYNEGOLOGIGAL AND SURGICAL PURPOSES. No. 328,460. Patented Oct. 20, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN H. CLARK, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO TABLE FOR GYNECOLOGICAL AND SURGICAL PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,460, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed February 2, 1885. Serial No. 154,754. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN H. OLARK,of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables for Gynecological and Surgical Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tables used by surgeons in the performance of surgical and gynecological operations; and it consists of mechanisms arranged and adapted to facilitate and render more convenient the positions of the patient or subject, whereby the operator can more readily reach and handle the patient. The said mechanism is construeted, combined, and operates substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,Figurel is a perspective view of my table, showing the top ra sed or tilted, with the mechanism for operating it. Fig. 2is a top or plan view with the top frame and bed removed, showing plan of mechanism for operating them. Fig. 31s a rear side view of table, showing the sliding hinges Arepresents the frame-work of an ordinary table. B is a rectangular frame, which rests upon said frame-work and is secured at one end only, being attached by hinges b, so that the opposite end may be raised, as shown in Fig. 1. The mechanism for raising said frame consists of a shaft, 0, journaled in boxes 00, secured to end rail, A, of the aforesaid framework. Said shaft is provided with pinions d d, which work in vertical rack-bars D D, suspended to under side of the frame. The shaft 0 is operated by a hand-crank, O.
E is a ratchet-wheel fixed on the shaft 0, in which a dog or pawl, e, engages for holding the said frame in the elevated position.
F is the table top or bed, upon which the patient is to be laid. It is attached to one side of said frame B by sliding hinges f f, so that its opposite side may be raised as shown. The mechanism for raising it consists of a short shaft, 9, set in the central part of the side rail of the aforesaid frame-work A. The inner end of said shaft is supported by an iron frame, h, and has a pinion, i, which rotates with the shaft inside of said frame h.
Gis a rack-barsuspended to the under side of the table F, andis operated by the said shaft 9 and pinion i. The shaft 9 also has a ratchetwheel, k, located on the outside of the rail A, with which a dog or pawl, Z, engages for hold ing the side of the table in the elevated posi tion. Underneath the two end corners of the table-top F are pivoted sliding braces m m, for supporting said corners. The top F is also divided across the middle, and the two parts are hinged together. This is for the purpose of providing for raising the middle of the table without raising the ends, which slide on the rods of the hinges f f.
L is a leaf hinged to the foot of the tabletop F, and is provided with a rack-bar, n,pivoted to its under side, and playing in a slotted arm, 0, depending from the end rail,A. Said rack-bar forms a brace and support for the leaf, which may thereby be adjusted at any suitable angle.
P is a head-rest hinged to the table-top so that it may be raised to suit the position of the patient, and is provided with pivotal supports attached under the end corners for ad justably holding it in position.
R R are adjustable foot-rests, secured by thumb-screws 1- underneath the side edges of frame B,which may be turned outward, when required, for holding the feet of a patientwhile performing certain operations.
S is a removable side board, required for preventing the sliding of a patient when the top is tilted up,as shown.
T T are drawers suitable for holding surgical instruments, &c.
From the foregoing it will be seen that this table is capable of adjustment in a variety of positions, thus making it of great convenience.
Having now described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with the frame-work of a table provided with adjustable frame B, and mechanism for elevating and holding it,of the top or bed F,divided at the middle and at tached to said frame by slidinghinges f f,said top arranged to be elevated or tilted at opposite side by means of mechanism consisting of short crank-shaft g, set in side rail, A, and supported by frame h, and provided with pinion i, operating rack-bar G, suspended to said top, said shaft g having ratchet k, engaging with pawl l,f0r holding the top F up, said top also having pivoted sliding corner-supports m,
m, substantially as described, and for the pur- 3. The combination, with the adjustable poses specified. frame B, ofthe adjustable foot-rests B R, sub- 2. The combination, with the adj ust-able stantially as and for the purposes specified. table-top F,of the adjustable head-rest P and FRANKLIN H. CLARK. 5 the adjustable leaf L, having rack-bar n, for Witnesses: holding it in position, as and for the purposes E. W. LAIRD,
specified. GEO. W. TIBBITTs.
