Abstract

A carton accomodating a plurality of articles, such as bottles, comprising a top (16, 26), a base (12, 30) and a pair of side walls (14, 28) interconnecting said top and base thereby forming a tubular structure, said top being provided with two spaced rows of apertures (54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64) through which the top portions of said articles protrude and a carrying handle means (18, 20, 22) extending upwardly from said top characterised in that said handle means is located between said two rows of apertures and is off set from a plane disposed midway between said rows of apertures.

Technical field

The present invention relates to a cardboard carrier for carrying a plurality of articles comprising an upright handle.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

EP 0 456 448 discloses a cardboard carrier for storing a plurality of objects, such as bottles, comprising a top, a base and a pair of side walls connecting the top and the base to form a cylindrical body with a handle erected from the top and with locking tabs that secure the opposing panels at the bottom of the handle to keep it upright.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention and its preferred modifications seek to overcome or at least reduce the problems of the prior art.

One aspect of the present invention is to provide a cardboard carrier for carrying a plurality of articles, e.g. of bottles comprising a top portion, a base and a pair of side walls that connect the top portion and the base to form a cylindrical shape. At the top there are two separate rows of apertures through which the tops of the stored objects are pushed and a handle which extends from the top of the carrier and is characterized by being positioned between the rows of apertures and extending from a plane between the rows.

According to one optional feature of this aspect of the invention, the handle may comprise a pair of side-by-side panels to provide an upright position of the handle. The other part may preferably comprise securing means which interconnect the lower ones

- 2 - a repair sheet of the handle part which prevents the handle panels from being separated from one another. More preferably, the securing means may comprise a tab cut out from the connection of the top portion and one of the handle panels that is engaged in one of the apertures adjacent the opposite handle panel.

According to a further optional feature of this aspect of the invention, the securing clip may be engaged in one of the openings in the top of the carton and held there by the top of one of the stored objects.

Another aspect of the present invention is to provide a carton blank for receiving a plurality of articles. The blank includes a first base panel, a first side wall panel, a first top panel, first and second handle panels, a second top panel, a second side wall panel, and a second base panel, respectively, which are rotatably secured to each other. The first and second panels of the base are adapted for interconnection to form a cardboard carrier of cylindrical shape, wherein the first and second handle panels forming an upright handle are adapted to form a handle erected from the transverse center plane of the carrier in an assembled shape.

According to an optional feature of this aspect of the invention, the first and second panels of the upper portion comprise a plurality of openings into which the upper portion of the articles housed in the assembled carrier may be inserted.

According to a further optional feature of this aspect of the invention, another component is a tab cut out from joining one of the top panels and one of the handle panels, adapted to engage one of said apertures cut out from the other panel of the top, and to form an upright handle.

Brief overview of the drawings

Figure 1 is a plan view of a cross-section of a carton for forming a carrier according to the invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

In Figure 1, a non-folded blank 10 of cardboard or other similar collapsible sheet material is shown, the components being respectively: base 12, first side panel 14. middle panel 15, first top panel 16, first handle panel 18, second handle panel 20, a third handle panel 22, a fourth handle panel 24, a second top panel 26, a middle panel 27, a second side panel 28, and a second base 30. All of these parts are folded together along the transverse fold lines, respectively: 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50 and 52.

The underside of the side panels 14 and 28 and the base panels 12 and 30 are not described in detail as they are not directly related to the present invention and are well known in the art.

The lower part of the side panels 14 and 28 and the base panels 12 and 12 are not described in detail because they do not relate directly to this art well known in the art.

From the panel of the top portion 16 a series of three orifices for the neck of the bottles 54, 56 and 58 is cut out. Each of the openings includes a securing portion 54a. 56a and 58a, which are adjacent to the lower portion of the handle panel 18. Similarly, a series of three neck openings 60, 62, and 64 are partially cut from the panel of the top portion 26. However, these openings are not provided with securing parts.

The handle tabs 24 are provided with locking tabs 66, 68, and 70 that rotatably support along the contact line 46 against the lower end of the handle panel 18. The locking tabs include D-shaped locking heads with locking edges 66a. 68a and 70a.

The handle panels 20 and 22 have handle openings 72 and 74 with flaps to facilitate gripping 76 and 78.

Adjacent to the handle panels 18 and 20 is a reinforcement panel 80 that is connected to the handle panel 20 along the bend line 82. The reinforcement panel 80 is separated from the handle panel 18 by a cut 84, extending from the bend line 40 to one of the side edges of the handle panel 18. adjacent the handle panel 22 and 24 adjoins the reinforcement panel 86, which is joined to the handle panel 22 along the bend line 88. The reinforcement panel 92 is disposed adjacent the opposite side edge of the handle panels 18 and 20 and is connected to the handle panel 20 along the bend line 94. From the handle panel 18, the reinforcement panel 92 is separated by a slit 96 extending from the bend line 40 to the side edge of the handle panel The reinforcement panel 98 is disposed adjacent the opposite side edge of the handle panels 22 and 24 and is rotatably connected to the handle panel 22 along the bend line 100. From the handle panel 24, the reinforcement panel 98 is separated by a slit 102 extending from the bend line 44 to the side the edge of the handle panel 24. The reinforcement panels 92 and 102 are rotatably connected along their common edge by a fold line 104.

The holes 110 and 112 are optionally cut from the common edges of the reinforcement panels 80, 86 and 92, 98, thereby interrupting the fold line 42 and facilitating the carrier folding process described below.

The complete assembly of the carrier according to the invention, shown in Figures 1-3, requires a series of successive interleaving and gluing. The folding procedure is not limited to the description below and may be varied according to any manufacturing requirements.

The blank is thus adapted to form a battery pack of six bottles placed in two rows of three, so that portions of the bottle neck 114 (see Fig. 3) protrude from the bottle neck openings in the handle panels that together form an upright handle H between both rows of bottles.

Fold the handle reinforcement panels 80 and 86 along the fold lines 82 and 88 against the handle panels 18, 20 and 22, 24 when folding the blank into a carrier. Similarly, fold the reinforcement panels 92 and 98 along the fold lines 90 and 100 against the handle panels 18, 20 and 22, 24.

Then erect the handle panels 18 and 20 side-by-side out of the blank plane so that the handle openings are more or less facing each other. More specifically, the locking tabs 66, 68 and 70 are folded along the fold line 46 by 180 degrees against the top panel 26. Handle panels 18 and 20 are folded along the fold line 42 against the handle panels 22 and 24. The locking tabs 66, 68 and 70 are thus aligned against holes 54, 56 and 58.

The tabs are then connected to the apertures in such a way that the heads of the tabs 66, 68 and 70 appear in the apertures 54, 56 and 58 with the tabs 66a. 68a and 70a in conjunction with the securing portions 54a, 56a and 58a.

The panels of the top portions 16 and 26 are bent out of the connection with the handle structure along the fold lines 38 and 46. The blank is then seated on the battery of bottles to be packed by making the handle H (see Fig. 3) formed of the handle panels. 18, 20, and 22, 24, is disposed between the two rows of bottles and extends from a plane between the two rows of apertures.

At the time of adjusting the bottle neck openings above the respective bottles, the heads of the locking tabs 66, 68 and 79 meet the respective path of movement between the cardboard blank and the rows of bottles. There are holes 54, 56 and 58 above the bottle necks. The cardboard blank is then placed on the bottle necks, tilting the heads of the locking tabs 66, 68 and 70 out and placing them between the handle panel 18 and the necks of the adjacent bottle. In Fig. 3, the first bottle is selected in close proximity to make the shape of the locking tab 66 clear. The handle panels 18 and 24 are thus joined by the locking tabs 66, 68 and 70 so as to remain upright for use.

By raising the handle H from the median plane between the two rows of holes, the pressure exerted on the locking tabs is increased - that is, a particularly strong handle is required. It will be understood by those skilled in the art that the present invention is not limited to carton with securing clips. The handle erected from the median plane between the two rows of openings can be used on cartons of this type even without securing clips. Using a similar, upright handle, its strength can be increased.

To complete the assembly of the carrier in the form of Figure 3, fold the side walls 14 and 28 down and fold and secure the base 12 and 30 below the bottom of the bottles. The overlap facilitating gripping S in Figure 2 is achieved by folding the flaps of the two corresponding holes of the handle. For greater user convenience, the optional handle panels 20 and 22 bend along the bend line 40/44 to a substantially rectangular position (see FIG. 2). For convenience, the top of the handle may be between the bottle caps. However, for better storage, the handle panels 20 and 22 can be bent along the bend line 40/44 and leaned against the bottle stoppers (see Fig. 3).

In the carrier arrangement described above, the strength of the handle is increased by the reinforcement panels 80, 86 and 92. 98.

The present invention and its preferred embodiment relate to an article carrier which, by its shape, provides sufficient strength for safe storage of bottles, but at the same time has sufficient flexibility so that the weight of the load acting on the handle is distributed throughout the carrier. The shape of the blank reduces the amount of cardboard required to a minimum. Storage of the bottle battery can be carried out manually or automatically. We expect that the present invention is applicable to various types of carriers and is not limited to the above-described embodiment.

Claims (8)

PATENT CLAIMS 1. Cardboard carrier with a handle for holding a plurality of objects, such as bottles, comprising a top, a base and a pair of side walls which connect the top and the base to form a cylindrical form of the carrier, at the top are two rows of mounting holes a handle including an opening of the handle that extends upwardly from the top, characterized in that the handle is located between the two rows of openings and extends from a plane in the middle of the rows of openings. Cardboard carrier with a handle according to claim 1, characterized in that the handle further comprises a pair of side-by-side panels which are rotatably connected, at a distance from the top of the carrier and forming an upright handle. Cardboard carrier with a handle according to claim 2, characterized in that a further component comprises securing means which interconnect the lower parts of the handle so as to prevent the handle panels from being separated from each other by their pivotal connection. A carton with a handle according to claim 3, characterized in that the securing means comprises a tab cut out from the joint of the top and one of the handle panels, the tab being engaged in one of the apertures adjacent the opposite handle panel. Cardboard blank according to claim 5 or 6, characterized in that the first and second panels of the upper part comprise a plurality of openings into which the upper parts of the articles placed in the assembled carrier can be inserted. Cardboard blank according to claim 7, characterized in that it further comprises a tab cut out from the connection of one of the top panels and one of the handle panels, wherein the tab is adapted to be received in one of the apertures cut out of the remaining a top panel to form an upright handle.
