Abstract

In the present invention, there is disclosed a carton carrier with a handle accommodating a plurality of articles, such as bottles, comprising a top portion (16, 26), a base portion (12, 30) and a pair of side walls (14, 28) interconnecting said top portion and base portion thereby forming a cylindrical structure, whereby said top portion (16, 26) being provided with two spaced rows of apertures (54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64) through which top portions (114) of said articles protrude. The top portion (16, 26) is further provided with a carrying handle (H) having an aperture (72, 74) for inserting a hand therein and extending upwardly from said top portion (16, 26) wherein the carrying handle (H) is characterized in that it is located between said two rows of apertures (54, 55, 56; 60, 62, 64), and is off set from a plane disposed midway between said rows of apertures (54, 55, 56; 60, 62, 64). Disclosed is also a carton blank for the above-described carton carrier with a handle for accommodating a plurality of articles, said blank having a first base portion (12), a first side wall panel (14), a first top portion (16), first and second handle panels (18, 22; 20, 24) each including an aperture (72, 74) for inserting a hand therein, a second top portion (26), a second side wall panel (28) and a second base portion (30) hinged respectively one to the next, said first and second base portions (12, 30) being interconnected thereby forming a carton of cylindrical structure and wherein said first and second handle panels (18, 22; 24, 28) form an upstanding handle (H), the apex of which is remote from said first and second top portions (16, 26), and which is off set from a transverse centre plane of said blank.

Description

Technical field

The present invention relates to a card carrier for carrying a plurality of articles comprising an upright handle.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Patent document EP 0 456 448 discloses a cardboard carrier for carrying a plurality of articles such as bottles, forming the top, base and a pair of side walls connecting the top and base, thereby forming a tubular structure provided with a carrying handle extending upwardly from the top and closing tabs that attach the front panels at the bottom of the carrying handle. A drawback to this document is that articles tend to restrict access to the handle structure.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to provide a cardboard carrier for carrying a plurality of articles, eg bottles, comprising an upper portion, a base and a pair of side walls that connect the upper portion and the base to form a cylindrical formation. At the top there are two separate rows of openings through which the tops of the stored articles are inserted and a support handle that extends from the top of the carrier at a point between the two rows of openings, extending upwards from the plane between the rows. The handle consists of pairs of side-by-side panels that are pivotably connected at a distance from the top of the carrier. At the pivoting point of the holding panels and handles, at the bottom of the handle, there are locking means provided with a tongue tab cut out at the joint of the top of the handle panels, the tongue tab engaging one of the apertures adjacent opposing panels of the carrier handle at the top and held by the upper part of one of the stored objects.

Further, the present invention provides a carton with a handle for receiving a plurality of articles comprising a first base panel, a first side wall, a first top portion, first and second handle panels each including a hand insertion opening, a second top portion, a second side panel. the wall and the second base, all of which in the planar state are respectively pivotably connected to each other except the outer edge of the first base and the second base, the support handle panels adapted to fold the blank into a cylindrical cardboard carrier with the support handle extending upwardly from the top center plane of the cardboard carrier. The first and second top portions comprise a plurality of apertures for receiving the top portions of articles stored in the assembled carton carrier. A further component of the carton blank is the tongue tabs cut out at the junction of one of the top portions and one of the carrier grip panels, wherein the tongue tabs in the assembled state of the carton carrier engage one of the holes cut out from the other top to form the erected handle.

An advantage of the present invention is that it provides better improved access to the handle panel, thereby reducing injury to the user's hand, for example by metal bottle caps.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Giant. 1 shows a longitudinal blank 10 in a flat state of cardboard or other similar collapsible sheet material comprising a base 12, a first side wall 14, an intermediate panel 15, a first top 16, a first handle panel 18, a second handle panel 20, a third handle panel 22, a fourth handle panel 24, a second top portion 26, an intermediate panel 27, a second side wall 28, and a second base 30. All these parts are pivotally connected along transverse fold lines in the following order: 32, 34, 36, 38 , 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50 and 52.

The lower portions of the side walls 14 and 28 and the bases 12 and 30 are not similarly described as they are not directly related to the present invention and are well known in the art.

A series of three bottle neck openings 54, 56 and 58 are cut from the first top portion 16. Each of these apertures 54, 56 and 58 is shaped to form a securing zone 54a, 56a, and

58a adjacent the lower portion of the handle panel 18. Similarly, a series of three apertures 60, 62 and 64 are partially cut from the second portion 26 to receive the neck of the bottles. However, these openings are not provided with locking zones.

Lock handle tabs 66, 68 and 70 are cut from the handle panel 24 and are secured to the lower end of the handle panel 18 along the hinged line 46 including D-shaped locking heads having respective fastening edges 66a, 68a and 70a. The locking tabs 66, 68 and 70 comprise D-shaped locking heads with locking edges 66a, 68a and 70a.

In the handle panels 20 and 22, the hand insertion openings 72 and 74 are provided with grips 76 and 78 for facilitating gripping.

The reinforced portion 80 disposed adjacent the handle panels 18 and 20 is connected to the panel 20 along the fold line 82. The reinforced portion 80 is separated from the handle panel 18 by a cut line 84 extending from the fold line 40 to one of the side edges of the handle panel 18. Adjacent to the handle panels 22 and 24 is a reinforced portion 86 which is connected to the handle panel 22 along the fold line 88. The reinforced portion 86 is separated from the handle panel 24 by a cross-section 89 extending from the fold line 44 to the side edge of the handle panel 24, the reinforced portions 80 and 86 being pivotably joined along common side edges in the fold line 90.

The reinforced portion 92 is positioned adjacent the opposite side edge of the handle panels 18 and 20 and is attached to the handle panel 20 along the fold line 94. From the handle panel 18, the reinforced portion 92 is separated by a cross-section 96 extending from the fold line 40 to the side edge of the handle panel 18. The reinforced portion 98 is disposed adjacent the opposite side edge of the handle panels 22 and 24 and is pivotally connected to the handle 45 of the handle panel 22 along the fold line 100. From the handle panel 24, the reinforced portion 98 is separated by a cross section 102 extending from the fold line 44 to the side edge of the handle panel 24. The reinforced portions 92 and 102 are pivotably joined along a common side edge of the fold lines 104.

The apertures 110 and 112 are optionally cut from the common edges of the reinforced portions 80, 86 and 92, 98, thereby breaking the folding lines 42 and facilitating the carrier folding process described below.

The complete assembly of the carrier according to the invention, shown in Figures 1 to 3, requires a series of successive folding and gluing. The folding procedure is not limited to the description below and may be varied according to any manufacturing requirements.

The blank is thus adapted to form a battery pack of six bottles positioned in two rows of three, such that the neck top portion 114 of the bottles (see Fig. 3) protrudes from the head throat openings in the handle panels that together form an upright handle H between the two rows of bottles.

When folding the blank to form a support, the reinforced handle portions 80 and 86 are folded along the fold lines 82 and 88 against the handle panels 18, 20 and 22, 24. Similarly, the reinforced portions 92 and 98 fold along the fold lines 90 and 100 against the handle panels 18, 20 and 22, 24.

Thereafter, the handle panels 18 and 20 are erected in a mutually aligned position when erected to a position projecting outward from the plane of the blank so that the handle openings are more or less opposed.

In particular, the tabs 66, 68 and 70 are folded along the bend line 46 by 180 degrees against the top of the panel 26. The handle panels 18 and 20 are folded along the bend line 42 against the handle panels 22 and 24. The tongue clips 66, 68 and 70 are thus aligned against the openings 54, 56 and 58.

The tabs are then connected to the apertures in such a way that the tabs of the tabs 66, 68 and 70 appear in the apertures 54, 56 and 58 with the locking edges 66a, 68a and 70a in communication with the locking zones 54a, 56a and 58a.

The top portions 16 and 26 bend out of engagement with the structure H along the bend lines 38 and 46. The blank is then seated on the battery of the bottles to be packaged, so that the handle H (see Fig. 3), formed from the handle panels 18, 20 and 22, 24, is positioned between the two rows of bottles and protrudes from the plane between both rows of holes.

When the bottle neck openings are fitted to the respective bottles, the heads of the tabs 66, 68 and 79 meet the respective path of travel between the cardboard blank and the rows of bottles. Above the bottle necks there are openings 54, 56 and 58. The cardboard blank is then fitted onto the bottle necks, with the heads of the locking tabs 66, 68 and 70 swiveling out and positioned between the handle panel 18 and the neck of the adjacent bottle. In Figure 3, the first bottle is removed in greater detail to show the form of the locking tab 66. The handle panels 18 and 24 are thus connected by the locking tabs 66, 68 and 70 so as to remain erect for use.

By erecting the handle H from the median plane between the two rows of holes, the pressure exerted on the locking tabs is increased, i.e. a particularly strong handle is required. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the present invention is not limited to carton with locking tabs.

The handle H, erected from the median plane between the two rows of openings, can be used on cartons of this type even without locking tabs. By using a similar handle from the center of the erected handle, its strength can be increased.

Assembling the carriers in the form of Figure 3 is completed by bending the side walls a4 and 28 downwards and folding and securing the bases 12 and 30 below the bottom of the bottles. The protruding gripping portion S with an inserted elastic filling, shown in Figure 2, is formed by folding the flaps 76, 78 of the two corresponding holes of the handle. For convenience to the user, the handle panels 20 and 22 optionally bend along a bend line 40, 44 to a substantially rectangular position (see FIG. 2). For convenience, the top of the handle may be above the bottle caps. For better storage, panels can be used

In the above-described carrier arrangement, the strength of the handle is increased by the reinforced portions 80, 86 and 92, 98.

The present invention and its preferred embodiment relate to an article carrier which, by its shape, provides sufficient strength to securely fit the bottles but at the same time has sufficient flexibility so that the weight of the load acting on the handle is distributed throughout the carrier. The shape of the blank reduces the amount of cardboard required to a minimum. The bottle battery can be stored manually or automatically. We expect that the present invention is applicable to various types of carriers and is not limited to the above-described embodiment.
