FOR THE COMPATIBLE INTRODUCTION OF A 16:9 LETTERBOX FORMAT INTO EXISTING 4:3 TELEVISION STANDARDS, THE PICTURE INFORMATION OF THE 16:9 RECORDING IS PRESENTED WITH BLACK BANDS AT THE UPPER AND LOWER EDGES OF THE PICTURE. FOR THE FULL-FORMAT PRESENTATION ON A 16:9 RECEIVER, AUXILIARY INFORMATION, PERMITTING AN IMPROVED PICTURE QUALITY, IS TRANSMITTED IN THE BLACK BANDS OF THE COMPATIBLE 4:3 TRANSMISSION. IN ORDER THAT A 16:9 RECEIVER CAN DECODE THE TELEVISION SIGNALS IN THE CORRECT MANNER, AN APPROPRIATE IDENTIFICATION OF THE SIGNAL TYPE IS REQUIRED. IN ORDER TO AVOID AN ALTERATION OR IMPAIRMENT OF THE PRESENT-DAY ALLOCATION OF THE VERTICAL BLANKING INTERVAL, SIGNAL-TYPE AUXILIARY INFORMATION IS TRANSMITTED IN THE HALVES OF THE FIRST OR THE LAST ACTIVE PICTURE LINE OF THE TELEVISION SIGNAL WHICH ARE FREE FROM PICTURE SIGNALS, OR IN THE REGION OF THE REAR BLACK PORCH IN AT LEAST ONE LINE PER FRAME. THEREBY, THE IDENTIFICATION SIGNAL CAN BE FORMED BY A COLOR BURST STARTING EARLIER AND/OR FINISHING LATER IN A TEMPORAL SENSE, AND/OR BY A DATA SIGNAL ARRANGED AFTER THE COLOR BURST OR COINCIDING WITH THE COLOR BURST IN A TEMPORAL SENSE.
