Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the capacity of ROM storing the number of run-lengths by shortening the bit length of the address generated by the MH code, in the decoding system of a picture signal which has been encoded by the modified Hoffman (MH) system. CONSTITUTION:The address of 10 bits is generated by the MH code. For instance, when the number of white run-length is 2, the MH code is (0111), and therefore A0-A7 become (11100111), and both A8 and A9 become ''0''. Also, when the number of black run-length is 5, the MH code is (0011), and therefore A0-A9 become (0011110011). ROM storing the number of run-lengths is read out by this address. The contents of ROM store the codes of each run-length number of 8 bits or less, and the discrimination possible/impossible bits related to the bit length. Accordingly, it is possible to reduce the capacity of ROM storing the number of run-lengths, and to decode the number of run-lengths efficiently.
