【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は情報検索に関する。
さらに特定すれば、本発明は、ユーザ定義プロファイル
に基づく情報検索、たとえば、特定のユーザが関心をも
っている情報を含む「電子」ニュースペーパーの生成の
ためのクライアント／サーバモデルに関する。

【従来の技術】インターネットや、Ｃｏｍｐｕｓｅｒｖ
ｅ，Ａｍｅｒｉｃａ Ｏｎ−ｌｉｎｅ，Ｐｒｏｄｉｇｙ
などの様々なオンラインサービス及びその他のサービス
のようなコンピュータ化情報資源の開発は、電子的に利
用可能である情報の急増をもたらしてきた。事実、この
ような電子情報は新聞、雑誌、さらにはテレビなどの従
来の情報送信手段に代わる位置を占めることが多くなっ
ている。それらの資源の全てに見られる第１の問題は、
ユーザが関心をもっている情報を獲得する順序で利用可
能であるぼう大な量の情報をふるい分けすることであ
る。
【０００３】現在、上記のサービスの１つに加入してい
るユーザ又はインターネットを使用するユーザは、関心
ある記事、掲示又は他のファイルを得るために、手動操
作で様々な情報資源を走査しなければならない。典型的
には、ユーザが関心をもつと思われるトピック領域を見
出すために、ユーザは関心領域又は関心ニュース源（印
刷物、ＵＳＥＮｅｔ Ｎｅｗｓｇｒｏｕｐ，ｆｏｒａ又
はトピックによって分類される他の領域）を手動操作で
走査する。そこで、ユーザは、主題見出し、たとえば、
ユーザが読みたいものと一致する見出しをもつ記事又は
ファイルを検索する。１例を挙げると、インターネット
のいくつかのＵＳＥＮｅｔ Ｎｅｗｓｇｒｏｕｐは、こ
の種の手動操作による走査を可能にするために郵便が関
連主題見出しを有していなければならないという慣例
（「ｎｅｔｉｑｕｅｔｔｅ」として知られている）を制
定している。ニュースペーパー／雑誌の記事見出しも類
似の機能を果たす。従って、ユーザが販売用製品の説明
を見ることを望まない場合には、ユーザは単に主題見出

操作走査プロセスが非常に長い時間を要することは明ら
かである。ニュースはある程度までは読み手に対して既
にふるい分けされている。いくつかの雑誌／ニュースペ
ーパーのサービスに加入しているユーザ又は何らかのテ
レビジョンネットワークを見るユーザは、ぼう大な量の
電子的に利用可能な情報（たとえば、ワイヤサービス）
をふるい分けされた形で既に得ている。ところが、この
「ふるい分け」は広範囲にわたる視聴者に対して、大規
模に実行される。特定の関心のある説明を特定のユーザ
向けに適応させることは行われていない。従って、１人
のユーザの特定の関心に適応させた、電子形態で利用可
能な説明のサブセットを生成するためにきわめて多種多
様な電子ニュース源を自動的に分類する必要が生じてい
る。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】すなわち、電子ニュー
ス源からユーザ関連情報を獲得する従来の技術にはいく
つかの欠点がある。本発明はユーザ定義プロファイル
（たとえば、パーソナル化ニュースペーパー）に基づい
て情報を検索する自動的な方法及びシステムを提供する
ことを課題とするものである。。
【０００６】ユーザ制御クライアントは状態なしサーバ
との間に通信を成立させ、サーバはサーバとクライアン
トとの間で（たとえば、ＨＴＴＰ交換を介して）オプシ
ョンのリストをクライアントに提示する。クライアント
はユーザ定義プロファイルの識別を実行する。サーバは
（たとえば、コモンゲートウェイインタフェース（ＣＧ
Ｉ）を介して）第１のアプリケーションプログラムに携
わり、第１のアプリケーションプログラムはユーザ定義
プロファイルを検索するが、その際、ユーザ定義プロフ
ァイルはユーザが関心をもっている情報を識別する。第
１のアプリケーションプログラムは情報のデータベース
を検査し、ユーザ定義プロファイル中の指定に従ってど
の情報にユーザが関心をもっているかに基づいてデータ
ベースから情報の１つのサブセットを自動的に検索す
る。サーバは、第１のアプリケーションプログラムによ

【０００７】１つの実施態様では、クライアントはＨＴ
ＴＰブラウザアプリケーションプログラムを具備し、サ
ーバは遠隔コンピュータシステムにおいて動作するＨＴ
ＴＰサーバアプリケーションプログラムを具備する。第
１のアプリケーションプログラムは、ユーザプロファイ
ルの状態を保持するためにユーザ定義プロファイルを含
むファイルを記憶しており、状態なしＨＴＴＰサーバに
セッションごとに状態を保持するサーバをエミュレート
させる。
【０００８】１つの実施態様では、第１のアプリケーシ
ョンプログラムは情報のデータベースを検査し、たとえ
ば、ニュースペーパーを最新の状態に保つために、ユー
ザ定義プロファイルに基づいて周期的な間隔をもってデ
ータベースから情報の１つのサブセットを自動的に検索
する。
【０００９】ユーザ定義プロファイルはニュース源ＩＤ
と、関連探索項とを含むことができ、第１のアプリケー
ションプログラムはそのニュース源ＩＤによって識別さ
れるニュース源を求めて情報（たとえば、生ニュース
源、ＵＳＥＮｅｔ Ｎｅｗｓｇｒｏｕｐ又はその他の資
源）を走査する。次に、関連探索項を含むニュース源中
の第１組のファイルを識別しても良く、第１のアプリケ
ーションプログラムは、パーソナル化情報、すなわち、
ニュースペーパーの作成のために、第１組のファイルを
情報のサブセットの中に挿入する。ユーザ定義プロファ
イルからのニュース源ＩＤと関連探索項をトピックによ
り記憶でき、そこで、サブセットはトピックによりアレ
ンジされて、ユーザに対して表示される。
【００１０】第１のアプリケーションプログラムは、プ
ロファイルを作成又は修正するために、サーバにユーザ
に対しオプションを提示させることもでき、それらのオ

Ｄの中で探索するための関連探索項をユーザにユーザ定
義プロファイルに対し指定させるための第１のオプショ

項を削除及び／又は変更することを指定するための第２
のオプションとを含む。添付の図面の図の中に本発明を

【発明の実施の形態】本発明は、ユーザ定義プロファイ
ルを使用して情報を自動的に走査し且つその情報からの
関連の説明をそのプロファイルに基づいてユーザに提供
する方法及び装置である。以下に、データ構造、ステッ
プの流れ、ハードウェア構成などを含めたいくつかの特
定の実施形態に関連して本発明を説明するが、そのよう
な特定の詳細な事項がなくとも本発明の実現形態を実施
できることは当業者には明白であろう。
【００１２】本発明の実施形態は、図１に示すように、
クライアント／サーバアーキテクチャを使用しており、
この場合、ニュースを求めるユーザ要求１１０はクライ
アントアプリケーションプログラム１００によりサーバ
１５０（典型的には、インターネット又は別の通信媒体
を介してアクセス可能である遠隔コンピュータシステ
ム）へ送信される。以下にさらに詳細に説明するが、サ
ーバ１５０はそれらのユーザ要求に基づいて生（たとえ

ュータシステムで、また、サーバプロセスは第２のコン
ピュータシステムでそれぞれ活動状態にあり、互いに通
信媒体を介して通信し合うことにより、分散形機能性を
実現すると共に、複数のクライアントがサーバの情報収
集能力を利用できるようにする。
【００１３】クライアント及びサーバのさらに詳細な図
を図２に示す。クライアントとサーバは２つのコンピュ
ータシステムの中で動作しているプロセスであり、それ
らのプロセスは高レベルプログラミング言語（たとえ
ば、Ｃ又はＣ＋＋）から生成され、コンパイルされ、コ
ンピュータシステム（たとえば、ワークステーション）
において実行されるのであるが、プログラムされている
か、あるいは専用ハードウェアである多種多様なハード
ウェア装置でプロセスを実現しうることは当業者には理
解できる。
【００１４】クライアント１００とサーバ１５０はワー
ルドワイドウェブ（ＷＷＷ）により提供される機能性を
使用して通信する。ＷＷＷのクライアントとサーバはハ
イパーテキストトランスファプロトコル（ＨＴＴＰ）と
して知られている規格を使用して、通信媒体２５０を介
して通信する。実施形態によっては、クライアントとサ
ーバは大容量通信のためにシリアルラインインターネッ
トプロトコル（ＳＬＩＰ）又はＴＣＰ／ＩＰ接続を介し
て結合されていても良い。クライアントの中では、「ブ
ラウザ」２００として知られる第１のプロセスが活動し
ており、このプラウザはサーバ１５０との接続を成立さ
せ、情報をユーザに提示する。様々な実施形態で任意の
数の市販のブラウザ又は公的に利用可能なブラウザを使
用して良いが、この実施形態においては、ブラウザ２０
０としてはイリノイ州アーバナーシャンペインのＮａｔ
ｉｏｎａｌ Ｃｅｎｔｅｒ ｆｏｒ Ｓｕｐｅｒｃｏｍ
ｐｕｔｉｎｇ Ａｐｐｌｉｃａｔｉｏｎｓ（ＮＣＳＡ）
から入手可能であるＭｏｓａｉｃブランドのブラウザ
（バージョン２．０以上）を使用している。ＨＴＴＰや
Ｍｏｓａｉｃバージョン２．０以上のブランドのブラウ
ザの下で指定されている機能性を提供するＮｅｔｓｃａ
ｐｅ，Ｎｅｔｃｒｕｉｓｅｒ又はＬｙｎｘブランドのブ
ラウザなどの他のブラウザも利用可能であるので、それ
らを使用しても良い。
【００１５】サーバ１５０は、ＨＴＴＰ応答の形で情報
をクライアントに提示する適切なサーバソフトウェアを
実行する。後述するように、ＨＴＴＰ応答はハイパーテ
キストマークアップ言語（ＨＴＭＬ）又はサーバにより
生成される他のデータを使用して表現されるウェブ「ペ
ージ」に対応する。
【００１６】ＨＴＴＰの欠点は、それが状態なしプロト
コルであることである。クライアントの制御の下にサー
バでユーザトランザクションを実行しうる元になるウェ
ブ「ページ」は、クライアントセッションからクライア
ントセッションへと再現はされない。本発明をこのよう
に実現した場合、ユーザは遠隔サーバに接続し且つその
ユーザの関心を明示するユーザプロファイルを指定する
ことが可能である。ユーザは探索すべき情報（たとえ
ば、日付）に関わるコンテキストを指定することができ
る。ユーザはプロファイルを遠隔機械にセーブすること
ができる。最後に、ユーザはパーソナルプロファイル
（希望に応じて、何らかのアクセス制御を伴う）を検索
し、それを編集し（エントリを追加又は削除し）且つ将
来の動作に備えてセーブしておくことが可能である。
【００１７】この機能性の全てが、ＨＴＴＰの現在バー
ジョンでは適合しない基礎メカニズムを要求する。Ｍｏ
ｓａｉｃブランドの２．０以上のブラウザにおいては、
サーバにより提供されるＨＴＭＬ機能性２１０（ハイパ
ーテキストビュー及び項目の選択に基づくいくつかのテ
キストデータ及びその他のデータの表示と検索）に加え
て、クライアントプログラムによってサーバにサーバ内
に含まれている指定プログラムの実行を開始するように
指示させるコモンゲートウェイインタフェース（ＣＧ
Ｉ）２２０も提供される。このインタフェースと、ＨＴ
ＴＰとを使用して、サーバはその実行の完了時に結果を
クライアントに通知しても良い。サーバのアプリケーシ
ョンプログラムであるパーソナルニュースペーパー発生
器は各ユーザのプロファイルの状態のレコードを維持
し、そのため、セッションごとに、その他の点で状態な
しであるプロトコルに状態機能性を提供する。

タを制御するために、クライアントはそのブラウザから

作しうるワークステーション、パーソナルコンピュータ
又は他の処理装置などのコンピュータシステムを図３に
示す。本発明の１つの実現形態を実施できるワークステ
ーションはシステム３００を含む。システム３００は情
報を通信するためのバス又は他の通信手段３０１と、バ
ス３０１と結合して、情報を処理する処理手段３０２と
を具備する。システム３００は、バス３０１に結合し
て、プロセッサ３０２により実行すべき情報及び命令を
記憶するランダムアクセスメモリ（ＲＡＭ）又は他の揮
発性記憶装置３０４（主メモリという）をさらに具備す
る。主メモリ３０４は、プロセッサ３０２による命令の
実行中に一時変数又は他の中間情報を記憶するために使
用することもできる。システム３００は、バス３０１に
結合して、プロセッサ３０２に関わる静的情報及び命令
を記憶する読取り専用メモリ（ＲＯＭ）及び／又は他の
静的記憶装置３０６と、磁気ディスク又は光ディスク及
びそれに対応するディスクドライブなどのデータ記憶装
置３０７とをさらに具備する。データ記憶装置３０７は
バス３０１に結合して、情報と命令を記憶する。この装
置は、市販のソフトウェア製品を使用して現在定義済み
問題記述に関する情報を維持する、ここで説明すべきデ
ータベースを記憶するために使用することができる。

対して情報を表示するバス３０１に結合した陰極線管
（ＣＲＴ）又は液晶表示装置（ＬＣＤ）などの表示装置

ックボール、スタイラス又はカーソル方向キーなどのカ
ーソル制御装置３２３であり、この制御装置は、方向情
報及び指令選択をプロセッサ３０２へ通信し且つ表示装
置３２１におけるカーソルの動きを制御するために、バ
ス３０１に結合されている。

は全てと関連ハードウェアは様々な実施形態で使用され
て良いのであるが、どのような構成のシステムであって
も特定の実働化に従って様々な目的に合わせて使用しう
ることを理解できる。

の、Ｓｕｎ Ｍｉｃｒｏｓｙｓｔｅｍｓ（登録商標）ブ
ランドのシリーズのワークステーションの１つである。
プロセッサ３０２はカリフォルニア州マウンテンビュー
のＳｕｎ Ｍｉｃｒｏｓｙｓｔｅｍｓ（登録商標），Ｉ
ｎｃ．製造のＳＰＡＲＣブランドのマイクロプロセッサ
の１つであれば良い。

（ＬＳＩ）、特定アプリケーション向け集積回路（ＡＳ
ＩＣ）又は他の専用ハードウェアなどの専用ハードウェ
アなどの専用ハードウェア装置で実現されても良いこと
は当業者には理解できる。ここで説明する事項は類似の
機能を有する装置に等しく適用される。
【００２４】図４は、サーバ１５０と、サーバ中のＣＧ
Ｉの制御の下で動作するニュースペーパー発生器アプリ
ケーションプログラム４００とのインタラクションを示
す。ユーザ入力に応じて、サーバ中の活動中のアプリケ
ーション、この場合にはパーソナルニュースペーパー発
生器４００へ要求が送信され、その結果、アプリケーシ
ョンはいくつかの機能を実行する。たとえば、サーバに
それまで存在していないプロファイルの場合、ニュース
ペーパー発生器４００はサーバにおいて「プロファイ
ル」として知られる探索仕様の作成、編集を実行させ
る。これにより、実働化のとき、サーバは要求時に、又
は規則的な間隔をおいて、クライアントに関わるパーソ
ナルニュースペーパーを生成させることができる。
【００２５】サーバ１５０中のＣＧＩ２２０からユーザ
プロファイル又は要求を受けることによって、ニュース
ペーパー発生器はいくつかのアクションを実行する。た
とえば、プロファイル作成の場合、プロファイルを作成
して、４１０のような局所ファイルに記憶させるが、後
に編集動作の間又はニュースペーパーの作成中にサーバ
によりそのプロファイルをアクセスすれば良い。このよ
うに、ＨＴＴＰの状態なしプロトコルは状態プロトコル
に変換され、その際にクライアント又はユーザプロファ
イルをセッションごとに再現する。これにより、実働化
において、たとえば、１日に数回又は１週間に数回など
の規則的な間隔をおいて、パーソナルニュースペーパー
を自動的に生成できる。
【００２６】図示する通り、ニュースペーパー発生器４
００は複数の生ニュース源４２０，４３０及び４４０を
使用する。それらのニュース源はいくつかの利用可能な
生ニュースフィードのいずれかであれば良い。たとえ
ば、各々のニュース源は別個のニュース源又はワイヤサ
ービス（たとえば、Ｒｅｕｔｅｒｓ，Ａｓｓｏｃｉａｔ
ｅｄ Ｐｒｅｓｓ）であっても良く、また、別のニュー
ス源として電子ディスカッショングループ（たとえば、
ＵＳＥＮｅｔニュースグループ）であっても良い。実働
化に際して、任意の数のニュース源又は任意の型のニュ
ース源を使用しても良い。
【００２７】図５ａ及び図５ｂはパーソナルニュースペ
ーパー発生器の動作の論理を示す。まず、ステップ５０
２では、ニュースペーパーの第１面、すなわち、ウェル
カム画面を表示する。これは、ユーザが最初にＵＲＬ
（ユニフォームリソースロケータ）の指定を介してサー
バをアクセスするときに表示されるページである。図６
に示す６００のような表示画面はユーザのコンソールに
表示される。ユーザが表示画面６００で「ｄｏｉｔ」ア
イコン６１０を選択すると、コンソールに表示されてい
るフォームに入力されたオプションやその他のデータが
コミットされ、その結果、ニュースペーパー生成プログ
ラムが呼び出される。次のステップ５０４では、ユーザ
はブラウザのフォームサポートを介して、フィールド６
０２の中のプロファイル名又はユーザ名を入力すること
ができる。これは、選択装置又は他の手段を使用して選
択し且つ選択されたブランクをプロファイル名（典型的
にはユーザのイーメイルアドレス）で埋めることによっ
て可能になる。所定の実働化において希望されるのであ
れば、ステップ５０６でアクセス制御を実行しても良
く、そこでパスワードを求めてユーザに問合わせる。
【００２８】ステップ５０８でユーザインタフェースオ
ブジェクト６０４の選択により指示される通りにユーザ
がプロファイルの編集を希望することがわかったなら
ば、プロセス５００は図５ｂへ進む。希望していないの
であれば（ユーザインタフェースオブジェクト６０６を
選択した場合）、ユーザはユーザインタフェースフォー
ムの中のフィールド６０８を埋めるか、プルダウン、ポ
ップアップメニュー又は他の手段により、パーソナルニ
ュースペーパーが生成される日付を指定しても良い。次
に、ステップ５１２では、ユーザに関わるプロファイル
が存在するか否かを判定する。存在していれば、記憶さ
れているプロファイルを使用してニュースペーパーを生
成する。ユーザのプロファイルの中でユーザにより選択
されるトピック／サブジェクト／キーワードに従って、
生ニュース源を走査し、ステップ５１４でプロファイル
に一致する情報を収集する。プロファイルが存在しない
場合には、ステップ５１６で、プロファイルを作成し且
つ編集するためのオプションをユーザに与える。
【００２９】ユーザがプロファイルの編集及び／又はル
ックアップを希望したならば（アイコン６０４を選択し
た場合）、図５ｂのステップ５１８で、プロファイルが
存在するか否かを判定する。希望しなかった場合には、
新たなプロファイルを作成するためのオプションがユー
ザに与えられる。そこで、ステップ５２２では、プロフ
ァイルが作成されているか又は既に存在している場合
に、プロファイルを編集することができる。何らかの編
集動作が完了すると、プロセスは完了し、図５ｂに戻
る。
【００３０】パーソナルニュースプロファイルはニュー
スペーパー発生器によりトピックによってＡＳＣＩＩテ
キストファイルに記憶される。各トピックは探索するた
めの複数のニュース源（たとえば、刊行物又はニュース
フィード）と、対応する探索項目とを含む。いくつかの
フルテキスト検索システムにおけるように、ディスジャ
ンクション（「１」文字）により探索項目の区切りを規
定しても良い。ニュースプロファイルの１例は次の通り
である。

【００３２】トピック、ニュース源及びキーワードに関
わるリストの各々はファイルの中では「〜」文字によっ
て区切られている。最初のストリング（たとえば、「Ｓ
ｕｎＮｅｗｓ」）はトピックを識別し、第２組のストリ
ング（たとえば、「.*」）はニュース源のファイル仕様
を識別し（この「.*」は全ての生ニュース源を探索する
ことを指示する）、次の組のストリングは探索項目であ
り、最終ストリングは探索項目がケース依存形であるか
否かを指示する。次に、プロファイルの作成と編集につ
いて論じる
【００３３】ニュースプロファイルへのトピックの追加
を図７及び図８に示す。図７は、ニュースペーパー発生
器のプロファイル発生器部分により実行されるプロセス
ステップを示し、図８は、プロファイルへのトピックの
追加を制御するユーザインタフェースを示す。まず、ス
テップ７０２では、ユーザは、ＨＴＭＬ又はＣＧＩのフ
ィルインフォーム機能によって提供されるフィールド８
０２をフィルインするなどの方法により、関心トピック
にラベル付けする。ステップ７０４では、ユーザはフル
テキスト探索において使用する探索項目を指定する。そ
れらの項目はフィールド８０４の中に示されている。使
用できる探索項目の数は任意であり、「１」文字はディ
スジャンクション（「ｏｒ」）として扱われている。そ
こで、ユーザインタフェースオブジェクトのいずれか一
方８０６又は８０８を選択することにより、ユーザはそ
れらの探索項目がケース依存形であるか否かを指定す
る。このことはステップ７０６で検出される。ステップ
７０８では、フィールド８１０の中に示すような選択自
在の項目を含むスクロール可能リスト又は他の手段を使
用して、ユーザは探索を実行すべき探索コンテキスト
（印刷物、ニュースフィードなど）を指定する。アイコ
ン８１２又は別のコミット手段を選択することにより、
ステップ７１０において画面８００に入力したデータを
ニュースペーパー生成のためにユーザプロファイルに追
加する。
【００３４】ユーザプロファイルを編集するためのプロ
セスステップ及びユーザインタフェースを図９及び図１
０に示す。たとえば、画面１０００に表示される特定の
プロファイルに関して、そのトピックを修正するために
選択アイコン１００２〜１０１０のいずれかを選択すれ
ば良い。ステップ９０２では、ユーザがプロファイルか
らトピックを削除するための「削除」オプションを選択
したか否か（たとえば、画面１０００のアイコン１０１
２の選択）を判定する。選択していれば、ステップ９０
４で選択した項目を削除する。次のステップ９０６で
は、ユーザが「追加」アイコン１０１４を選択したか否
かを判定する。選択していれば、ステップ９０８で追加
オプション（図７のプロセス７００）を呼び出す。次
に、ステップ９１０では、プロファイルに基づくニュー
スペーパーの生成がユーザにより要求されるか否かを判
定する。これはユーザ選択アイコン１０１８（フィール
ド１０１６でニュースペーパーを生成すべき日付を指定
することを含む）によって指示される。日付の指定は探
索の範囲を指定された日付に限定する。ニュースペーパ
ーの生成が要求されるならば、ステップ９１２でプロフ
ァイルに基づいてニュースペーパーを生成する。
【００３５】先に論じた通り、実際にニュースペーパー
を作成するプロセスは、プロファイル中に含まれている
各々のトピックにおいて指定されるコンテキスト（たと
えば、ニュース源や日付）と、対応する探索項とにより
制御されるフルテキスト検索システムとして機能する。
これは、必要に応じて又は周期的な間隔をおいて自動的
に実行しうること及び記憶されているプロファイルの制
御を受けることを除いて、他のオンラインフルテキスト
検索システムとほとんど同じように機能する。
【００３６】実現されている実施形態の場合、生ニュー
ス源は所定のフォーマットをもつ大形テキストファイル
として現れる。ニュースペーパー生成中に実行されるフ
ルテキスト探索プロセスは、それらの大形ファイルにつ
いて実行される。指定のコンテキストを有するいくつか
の探索項のファイルの中における場所を確定するとき
に、場所を確定される記事を含むファイルの部分はサー
バに常駐している個々のＡＳＣＩＩに変換されるように
パーズされる。ＨＴＭＬを使用する一意性をもった参照
を行うため、記事のファイル名はそれ独自のものであ
る。実現されている実施形態では、記事ファイル名は数
字の形態をとり、一意性をもたせるために（厳密に同じ
秒時に受信される２つの記事は存在しない）、ファイル
名はその記事が作成された年、月、日、時間、分、秒を
全て連ねた日時である。そこで、第２の解析プロセスを
経て、記事のタイトルを使用して、パーソナルニュース
ペーパーのＨＴＭＬページ表現の中でアンカを作成し、
それはそのファイル指定により記事を参照する。ユーザ
による選択時に、サーバ側で記事のテキストを参照し、
それを第２のＨＴＭＬページとして表示することができ
る。
【００３７】図１１は、パーソナルニュースペーパーの
作成の結果、すなわちパーソナルニュースペーパーの主
画面を示す。これは、先に説明したようにサーバで実行
されるフルテキスト探索、パージング及びＨＴＭＬペー
ジ生成のプロセスの結果としてクライアント側で生成さ
れる。画面１１００に示すように、プロファイル名は１
１０２として表示される。プロファイルの中の各々のト
ピックは１１０４，１１０６，１１０８などの第１レベ
ルの見出しとしてリストアップされている。これら第１
レベルのトピック見出しの各々に続いて、探索項及びニ
ュース源と一致しうる説明がもしあれば、それらの説明
の名前を挙げる１１０６ａ〜１１０６ｃ，１１０８ａ〜
１１０８１などの第２レベルの見出しがある。ユーザが
各々の説明に関わる見出しを選択すること（前記のアン
カ）を経て、その説明のテキストを参照し、観察でき
る。パーソナルニュースペーパーから取り出した１つの
記事の表示の１例を 図１２の画面１２００に示す。ま
た、ユーザがパーソナルニュースペーパー主画面（図示
せず）に戻れるようにするために、ＨＴＭＬを介して、
記事を含むＨＴＭＬページに参照を挿入しても良い。
【００３８】以上、所望の情報の規定され且つ蓄積され
たユーザプロファイルに基づいてサーバからデータを検
索するクライアントアプリケーションプログラムに関わ
る方法及び装置を説明した。尚、上述の方法及び装置は
特定の用途を有し、図及び本文の中ではいくつかの特定
の実施形態に関連して説明をしたが、それらの特定の詳
細な事項の全てを伴わずとも本発明を実施しうる。従っ
て、図及び本文は単なる例示としてみなされるべきであ
り、本発明を限定しようとするものではない。本発明は
特許請求の範囲によってのみ限定されるのである。

Claims (6)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 ユーザ定義プロファイルに基づいて情報
    を検索するコンピュータによる実行方法において、 ａ．ユーザ制御クライアントがサーバとの間に通信を成
    立させる過程と、 ｂ．前記通信を成立させるのに先立って状態なし条件に
    ある前記サーバが前記クライアントにオプションのリス
    トを提示する過程と、 ｃ．ユーザが前記クライアントを介して前記ユーザ定義
    プロファイルを識別する過程と、 ｄ．前記サーバが前記ユーザ定義プロファイルを検索す
    る第１のアプリケーションプログラムに携わる過程と、 ｅ．前記第１のアプリケーションプログラムが生情報の
    データベースを検査し且つ前記ユーザ定義プロファイル
    に基づいて前記データベースから前記生情報の１つのサ
    ブセットを自動的に検索する過程と、 ｆ．前記第１のアプリケーションプログラムが前記生情
    報の前記サブセットを前記データベースから前記サーバ
    へ送信し且つ前記サーバは前記生情報の前記サブセット
    を前記クライアントに提示する過程とから成る方法。
  2. 【請求項２】 ユーザ定義プロファイルに基づいて情報
    を検索する自動方法において、 ａ．クライアントがユーザの制御の下に状態なしサーバ
    との間の通信を成立させ、前記サーバは前記サーバと前
    記クライアントとの間のＨＴＴＰ交換を介して前記クラ
    イアントにオプションのリストを提示する過程と、 ｂ．前記クライアントが前記ユーザ定義プロファイルを
    識別することを実行する過程と、 ｃ．前記サーバが、前記ユーザには関心のある情報を識
    別する前記ユーザ定義プロファイルを検索する第１のア
    プリケーションプログラムにコモンゲートウェイインタ
    フェース（ＣＧＩ）を介して携わる過程と、 ｄ．前記第１のアプリケーションプログラムが情報のデ
    ータベースを検査し且つ前記ユーザ定義プロファイルに
    おける識別に従って前記ユーザにはどの情報が関心ある
    ものであるかに基づいて前記データベースから前記情報
    の１つのサブセットを自動的に検索する過程と、 ｅ．前記サーバが前記第１のアプリケーションプログラ
    ムにより生成された通りの前記データベースからの前記
    情報の前記サブセットを前記クライアントに提示する過
    程とから成る方法。
  3. 【請求項３】 前記第１のアプリケーションプログラム
    が前記プロファイルを作成又は修正するために前記サー
    バにオプションを前記ユーザに対して提示させる過程を
    さらに具備し、前記オプションは、 ａ．前記ユーザに、前記情報の中のニュース源ＩＤと、
    前記ニュース源ＩＤの中で探索するための関連探索項と
    を前記ユーザ定義プロファイルに対し指定させる第１の
    オプションと、 ｂ．前記ニュース源ＩＤ及び／又は前記関連探索項を前
    記プロファイルの中で削除及び／又は変更することを指
    定する第２のオプションとを含む請求項２記載の方法。
  4. 【請求項４】 ユーザ定義プロファイルに基づいて情報
    を検索するシステムにおいて、 ａ．クライアントがサーバとの間で通信を成立させるの
    に応答して前記サーバと前記クライアントとの間のＨＴ
    ＴＰ交換を経て前記クライアントに対しオプションのリ
    ストを提示する回路を有し、前記クライアントのセッシ
    ョンごとに状態なしであるサーバを具備し、 ｂ．前記サーバは、前記クライアントが前記クライアン
    トによる前記ユーザ定義プロファイルの識別を実行する
    のに応答して第１のアプリケーションプログラムに携わ
    るためのインタフェースを有し、前記第１のアプリケー
    ションプログラムはユーザが関心のある情報を識別する
    前記ユーザ定義プロファイルを検索し、 ｃ．前記サーバは、前記第１のアプリケーションプログ
    ラムに情報をデータベースを検査し且つ前記ユーザ定義
    プロファイルの中で識別されるのに従ってどの情報に前
    記ユーザが関心をもっているかに基づいて前記情報の１
    つのサブセットを自動的に検索させるための実行制御イ
    ンタフェースを有し、且つ ｄ．前記サーバは、前記第１のアプリケーションプログ
    ラムによる前記自動検索に応答して前記データベースか
    らの前記情報の前記サブセットを前記クライアントに対
    し提示する提示回路を有するシステム。
  5. 【請求項５】 前記サーバは、前記プロファイルを作成
    又は修正するために前記オプションを前記ユーザに対し
    提示するオプション提示回路をさらに有し、前記オプシ
    ョンは、 ａ．前記ユーザに前記情報の中のニュース源ＩＤと、前
    記ニュース源ＩＤの中で探索するための関連探索項とを
    前記ユーザ定義プロファイルに対し指定させる第１のオ
    プションと、 ｂ．前記ニュース源ＩＤ及び／又は前記関連探索項を前
    記プロファイルの中で削除及び／又は変更することを指
    定する第２のオプションとを含む請求項４記載のシステ
    ム。
  6. 【請求項６】 情報を検索するコンピュータでの実現方
    法において、 ａ．ユーザ制御クライアントがサーバとの間に通信を成
    立させる過程と、 ｂ．ユーザは前記クライアントを介して前記サーバに対
    しユーザ定義プロファイルを識別する過程と、 ｃ．前記サーバは第１のアプリケーションプログラムに
    携わり、前記第１のアプリケーションプログラムは前記
    ユーザ定義プロファイルを検索する過程と、 ｄ．前記第１のアプリケーションプログラムは生情報の
    データベースを検査し且つ前記ユーザ定義プロファイル
    に基づいて前記データベースから前記生情報の１つのサ
    ブセットを自動的に検索する過程と、 ｅ．前記第１のアプリケーションプログラムは前記デー
    タベースからの前記生情報の前記サブセットを前記サー
    バへ送信し且つ前記サーバは前記生情報の前記サブセッ
    トを前記クライアントに対し提示する過程とから成る方
    法。
