Abstract
744,557. Cooling air; refrigerating. GARRETT CORPORATION. Sept. 28, 1953 [Oct. 20, 1952], No. 26576/53. Classes 29 and 64(3). Air to be supplied to an enclosure 13 is cooled in a heat exchanger 10 by coolant air which previously is cooled by expansion in a turbine 24 and afterwards is acted on by two fans 25, 38 the second of which has means for varying the flow through it, and so varying the cooling effect of the coolant air in the heat exchanger. In the form shown, these means comprise a pre-swirl device 39 in the inlet of the fan 38, which is motor-driven. The pre-swirl device has vanes which are angularly adjustable manually or automatically by changes in the temperature of the enclosure 13. Alternatively, throttle valves may be provided or the speed of the fan 38 may be variable. The first fan 25 is driven by the turbine 24. The coolant air is bled through a passage 23 from air being cooled in the heat exchanger, and flows successively through two passes 20, 21 in the latter. Water is sprayed through nozzles 26, 27 into the coolant air before it enters the passes 20, 21, to increase the cooling effect. To prevent ice-formation by excessive cooling, a byepass 34, regulated by a valve 35 controlled by the temperature of the coolant air entering the heat-exchanger, supplies uncooled air to mix with the cooled air entering the turbine 24. Water is also sprayed in an automatically controlled amount through a nozzle 31 into the cooled air, to keep the humidity in the enclosure 13 constant.
