Abstract

698,407. Refrigerating ; heat-exchangers. GODFREY ASSETS, Ltd., [formerly GODFREY & PARTNERS, Ltd., Sir G.], and JAMIESON, A. W. H. Oct. 4, 1950 [July 4, 1949], No. 17626/49. Classes 29 and 64 (iii) [Also in Group XXIX] Air conditioning means for an aircraft cabin or space 1 comprises a vortex tube 7 as described in Specification 405,781 supplied with compressed air from the compressor unit 3 of the main gas turbine or from a separately driven air compressor or a forwardly facing air inlet passage, the air passing first through a heat exchanger comprising an annular passage 5 surrounding the vortex tube and entering the vortex tube by a tangential nozzle 8 adjacent a diaphragm 9 with a central aperture 10 through which the cold air passes to the cabin 1. The hot air from the vortex passes through a restricted opening 11 forming an ejector nozzle which induces a draught of cooling air through an outer annulus 6 surrounding the passage 5 to cool the compressed air before it enters the vortex tube. This cooling air is admitted direct from the atmosphere by a duct 4 and mixes with the hot air in a pipe 12. The heat exchanger passages 5, 6, are provided with corrugated plates. To control the cooling the flow of hot air through the restricted orifice 11 is adjusted by a valve 14 carried by a bellows 15 to which the compressed air is admitted through an aperture 17 and from which the air escapes by an aperture 18 and pipe 19 leading to the cabin. The outlet 20 of pipe 19 is controlled by a valve 22 on a bimetallic element 21 so that the valve 14 is moved in accordance with the temperature in the cabin. To adjust the thermostat the bimetallic element is movable relatively to the outlet 20 by a screw 23. Hot air may be led to the cabin from the outlet 11 of the vortex tube, and may also be thermostatically controlled. The cold air may be used to cool radar or other apparatus or for making ice, and the hot air for cooking.
