Abstract

Apparatus for storage of data on data carrying means comprising stationary and/or motion picture capture means 2, data storage means adapted to store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means, control means comprising a display 5, user input means and processing means 6 adapted to control the data storage means 4, and payment means 7, in which the apparatus is contained in an outer body 8, and in which the data storage means will only store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means when a predetermined payment has been received by the payment means. Still or video images from a digital video camera 2 are recorded onto a DVD or CD.

Description

Apparatus for creating digital greetings messages This invention relates
to apparatus for creating digital greetings messages and storing them on data carrying means, and a method of using such apparatus.
It is common to send greetings cards to celebrate anniversaries or particular calendar events. However, unless they are home-made, conventional paper-based greetings cards can only be personalized with a written message.
The technology exists to store a photograph or video on data carrying means, for example compact discs or DVDs. As such, a photograph or video message can be stored onto a CD or DVD, and sent as a greetings present. However, the equipment required to perform this is expensive, and can be complicated to use.
It is an object of the present invention to provide apparatus to readily create and store greetings messages onto compact discs. it is a further object of the present invention to provide a method of using such apparatus.
It Is a further object of the present invention to provide CDs or DVDs for use with such apparatus, which are provided with greetings messages or images printed onto their outer surface.
Therefore according to the present invention apparatus for storage of data on data carrying means comprises stationary and/or motion picture capture means, data storage means adapted to store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means, control means comprising a display, user input means and processing means adapted to control the data storage means, and payment means, In which the apparatus is contained in an outer body, and in which the data storage means will only store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means when a predetermined payment has been received by the payment means.
The stationary and/or motion picture capture means can be a stills camera or a video camera, adapted to capture images at the site of the apparatus. The capture means can also be a data carriage means drive, a picture scanner or a video recorder, adapted to receive images which have already been taken elsewhere and are to be transferred to the processing means. In a preferred construction a digital video camera, a picture scanner and a digital camera chip drive can be provided.
The data carrying means may be a writable compact disc or DVD, and the data storage means can be a compact disc or DVD writer. In a preferred construction the data stored on the compact disc or DVD can be accessed by a DVD player.
The control means can be a controlling computer provided with a controlling software program, and the display may be a computer screen. In a preferred construction the user input means is incorporated into the computer screen in the form of a touch-screen device.
The controlling software program can be adapted to drive the touch-screen device, and run the CD or DVD writer, the camera, the scanner, the chip drive and the payment means.
In a preferred construction the outer body can be a self standing construction provided with a number of apertures, through which the various components of the apparatus can be accessed.
The payment means can be any known type of such device, for example money, or token, receiving, recognising and storing apparatus. In a preferred construction different predetermined payments can be required for the apparatus to perform a variety of tasks.
Preferably, the apparatus may be adapted to only function with writable compact discs or DVDs provided with a code, which can be recognised by the controlling software program, via the CD or DVD writer.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, data carrying means provided with a greetings message or image on its outer surface, Is used in combination with apparatus for storage of data on data carrying means comprising stationary and/or motion picture capture means, data storage means adapted to store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means, control means comprising a display, user input means and processing means adapted to control the data storage means, and payment means, in which the apparatus is contained in an outer body, and in which the data storage means will only store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means when a predetermined payment has been received by the payment means.
According to a third aspect of the present invention a method of using a set of two or more data carrying means, in which each data carrying means is provided with a different greetings message or image on its outer surface, in combination with apparatus for storage of data on data carrying means comprising stationary and/or motion picture capture means, data storage means adapted to store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means, control means comprising a display, user input means and processing means adapted to control the data storage means, and payment means, in which the apparatus is contained in an outer body, and in which the data storage means will only store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means when a predetermined payment has been received by the payment means, includes the following steps: 1) Choosing one data carrying means from the set with a preferred greetings message or image on its outer surface, 2) Placing the data carrying means in the data storage means, 3) Providing a predetermined payment to the payment receiving means, 4) Capturing a stationary and/or a motion picture with the stationary and/or motion picture capture means, 5) Viewing the stationary and/or motion picture on the display, 6) Storing the stationary and/or motion picture on the data carrying means with the data storage means, 7) Removing the data carrying means from the data storage means.
The invention can be performed in various ways, but one embodiment will now be desonbed by way of example, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of apparatus according to the present invention.
In figure 1 apparatus 1 for storage of data on data carrying means in the form of CDs or DVDs (not shown) comprises stationary and/or motion picture capture means in the form of digital video camera 2, picture scanner 3 and digital camera chip drive 3a, data storage means adapted to store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means, in the form of compact disc and DVD writer 4, control means comprising a display, user input means in the form of touch screen display 5, and processing means adapted to control the data storage means, in the form of computer 6, and payment means 7. The apparatus 1 is contained in an outer body 8. (The video camera 2, the scanner 3, the chip drive 3a, the CD writer 4, the computer 6 and the internal parts of the payment means 7, are shown in hatched lines because they are not visible inside the body 8) Further the compact disc and DVD writer 4 will only store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a compact disc or DVD when a predetermined payment has been received by the payment means 7.
The body 8 is free-standing, and comprises base 9, side walls 10, and feet 11.
A front wall 12 is provided with a first aperture 13, through which the display 5 can be viewed and a second aperture 14, through which the digital video camera 2 can capture images of the user.
The compact disc writer 4 can be accessed through a third aperture 15, the scanner 3 through a fourth aperture 16, the chip drive through a fifth aperture 16a and the payment means 7 through a sixth aperture 17.
The body 8 is provided with decoration and signage 18.
The payment means 7 comprises a exterior portion provided with coin and note apertures 19 and 20, and an internal portion 21 which houses the money recognition apparatus and a secure money containment means (not shown).
The computer 6 is provided with a controlling software program which is adapted to run the various components of the device. The computer 6 is also connected to the video camera 2, the picture scanner 3, the chip drive 3a, the CD and DVD writer 4, the touch screen display 5 and the payment means 7. Further, the controlling software program is adapted to check for a predetermined code on any writable CD or DVD placed in the CD and DVD writer 4, and to only perform the below described tasks if a CD or DVD provided with the predetermined code is placed in the CD and DVD writer 4.
In use a writable CD or DVD provided with the predetermined code (not shown) is placed in the CD and DVD writer 4. The controlling software program checks for the presence of the predetermined code, and if it is not present, a message will be displayed on the screen, requesting that a CD or DVD with the correct code be used. If the predetermined code is present, an options menu is displayed on the touch screen 5. The user can then choose from the menu what tasks are to be performed. The user can choose to have a video of a choice of durations, and/or one or more still images taken by the video camera 2, and/or to input one or more stll image using the scanner 3. Each option will cost a different amount, depending on its complexity and duration.
Once an option is chosen, the appropriate predetermined payment must be inputted into the payment means 7. Once the correct payment has been received, recognsed and stored, a signal is sent to the computer 6 from the payment means, and controlling software program runs the chosen tasks.
If a video or one or more stills pictures are to be taken the user positions themselves before the camera 2, and can control the operation from the touch screen display. If stills images are to be inputted, the user places the images in the scanner 3, or the chip drive 3a and they are scanned or downloaded and stored in the computer 6.
The user can view the images captured on the display, before choosing to store them on the writable CD or DVD.
When the user chooses to store the captures images, the computer 6 stores the images on the writable CD or DVD with the CD and DVD writer 4. The data is stored on the CD or DVD in the appropriate manner so that the CD or DVD can be used with a DVD player or a CD ROM drive. Once this is done, the CD or DVD can be removed.
It will be appreciated that the apparatus 1 can be altered without departing from the spirit of the invention.
For example, in one alternative embodiment the apparatus can be provided with a video cassette reading means, so a recorded video can be captured and stored onto the CD or DVD. In a further alternative embodiment the body can be adapted to sit on a table or similar, and is not free standing.
According to the second aspect of the invention a writable compact disc or DVD (not shown), which is provided with a greetings message or image on its outer surface is used in combination with apparatus 1. The greetings message or image can be anything which is appropriate for an anniversary or other calendar event, for example Happy Birthday,, merry Christmas,, or Happy Mothers Day,, or any appropriate image, and so on.
According to the third aspect of the present invention a method comprises using a set of two or more writable compact discs or DVDs (not shown), which are each provided with a different greetings message on their outer surface, in combination with apparatus 1, including the following steps: 1) Choosing one data carrying means from the set with a preferred greetings message or image on its outer surface, 2) Placing the data carrying means in the data storage means, 3) Providing a predetermined payment to the payment receiving means, 4) Capturing a stationary and/or a motion picture with the stationary and/or motion picture capture means, 5) Viewing the stationary and/or motion picture on the display, 6) Storing the stationary and/or motion picture on the data carrying means with the data storage means, 7) Removing the data carrying means from the data storage means.
Thus apparatus is provided to create a novel greetings gift, readily and at low cost to the user. Further, CDs or DVDs are provided for use with such apparatus, which are provided with greetings messages to enhance their appearance. Clams

Claims (12)

1. Apparatus for storage of data on data carrying means comprising
stationary and/or motion picture capture means, data storage means adapted to store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means, control means comprising a display, user input means and processing means adapted to control the data storage means, and payment means, in which the apparatus is contained in an outer body, and in which the data storage means will only store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means when a predetermined payment has been received by the payment means.
2. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 in which the stationary and/or motion picture capture means comprises a camera and/or a picture scanner and/or a digital camera chip drive.
3. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 in which the data carrying means is a writable compact disc or DVD, and the data storage means is a compact disc and/or DVD writer.
4. Apparatus as claimed in any of the preceding Claims in which the control means is a computer, provided with a controlling software program and the display and user input means comprises a touch screen display device.
5. Apparatus as claimed in any of the preceding Claims in which the outer body Is a self standing construction provided with a number of apertures, through which the various components of the apparatus can be accessed.
6. Apparatus as claimed in any of the preceding Claims in which the payment means is a money receiving, recognising and storing apparatus.
7. Apparatus as claimed in any of Ciaims 3-6 in which the apparatus is adapted to only function with writable compact discs or DVDs provided with a predetermined code, which can be recognised by the controlling software program.
8. Apparatus as claimed in any of the preceding Claims in which a number of predetermined payments can be made, which correspond to a number of different quantities of stationary and/or motion pictures being stored on a data carrying means.
9. Apparatus substantially as described herein and as shown In the accompanying drawing.

Data carrying means provided with a greetings message and/or image on its outer surface, in combination with apparatus for storage of data on data carrying means comprising stationary and/or motion picture capture means, data storage means adapted to store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means, control means comprising a display, user input means and processing means adapted to control the data storage means, and payment means, In which the apparatus is contained in an outer body, and in which the data storage means will only store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means when a predetermined payment has been received by the payment means.
11. Data carrying means as claimed in Claim 10, which is provided with a predetermined code, and in which the apparatus is adapted to only function with data carrying means provided with said predetermined code.
12. A method of using a set of two or more data carrying means, in which each data carrying means is provided with a different greetings message and/or image on its outer surface, in combination with apparatus for storage of data on data carrying means comprising stationary and/or motion picture capture means, data storage r means adapted to store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means, control means comprising a display, user input means and processing means adapted to control the data storage means, and payment means, in which the apparatus is contained in an outer body, and in which the data storage means will only store one or more stationary and/or motion pictures on a data carrying means when a predetermined payment has been received by the payment means, including the following steps: 1) Choosing one data carrying means from the set with a preferred greetings message and/or image on its outer surface, 2) Placing the data carrying means in the data storage means, 3) Providing a predetermined payment to the payment receiving means, 4) Capturing a stationary and/or a motion picture with the stationary and/or motion picture capture means, 5) Viewing the stationary and/or motion picture on the display, 6) Storing the stationary and/or motion picture on the data carrying means with the data storage means, 7) Removing the data carrying means from the data storage means.
