Abstract

Video record player e.g. video disc player, capable of playing back composite colour signals recorded in either of two different signal formats i.e. including chrominance signals with different buried colour subcarrier frequencies, includes a single VCO (24) which up- converts the chrominance signals, the frequency of this oscillator being controlled by comparing (26) the separated up-converted bursts with the appropriate one of two reference oscillations (30, 32) manually selected by switch (52) according to the signal format played back. The frequency difference between the two reference oscillations equals the frequency difference between the two buried subcarrier frequencies and thus also the frequency difference between the two up- converted subcarrier frequencies. In an alternative embodiment the VCO output frequency is selected to be one of two values in dependence upon the played back buried subcarrier frequency, in which case the subcarrier signals are up-converted to the same subcarrier frequency. The recorded composite colour signals comprise modified NTSC type signals, the chrominance signals being separated therefrom by comb filtering (40, 60, 61) either after (as shown) or before the up-conversion. Switch (51) is gauged to switch (52). The separated chrominance signals are demodulated (96, 98) using the selected reference oscillations, remodulated on a standard subcarrier (120) and combined (90) with the luminance signal. <IMAGE>
