Abstract

1514941 Radio signalling to road vehicles BRITISH BROADCASTING CORP 15 Sept 1975 [13 Sept 1974] 40084/74 Heading H4L In a method of broadcasting pre-recorded messages, e.g. to the drivers of road vehicles, each message is in speech but preceded by a digitally coded number unique to that message. As described, each receiver is arranged to store the digitally coded number and to compare the next received number with the stored number and only reproduce the message if its number is different from that stored. This arrangement prevents the reproduction of a message more than once and so tends to prevent drivers becoming bored by repeated messages and so switching off their receivers. As described, each message has a digitally coded head code having three parts: (a) type of message, e.g. weather reports or detours; (b) area code pertaining to the district applicable to the message; (c) serial number of message. The receiver may comprise a conventional car radio 20 having tape cassette or cartridge playback 23. A fixed tuned receiver 25, tuned to the special message transmitter, receives all such messages and passes them to a logic system 26 where the message type part of the head code is compared with that set in manually whilst the area code and message serial numbers are stored in a register. The second two sections of the head code of the next message are compared with that stored in the register and only if they are different from that previously stored, is the entertainment tuner 20 muted and the spoken message gated through at 29 to the amplifier 21. The trailing edge of the message is detected by differentiator and causes the contents of a short-term register (Fig. 3, not shown) to be transferred to the longer-term storage register.
