Abstract

1464573 Adjustable beds J NESBIT-EVANS & CO Ltd 8 May 1975 [8 May 1974] 20180/74 Heading A4J and A4M A bed has three pivotally inter-connected sections 26, 28, 30 adjustably supported on a frame 16 pivotally connected to a wheeled chassis 14, a piston and cylinder unit 42 and a brake 40 being provided between the head section 26 and the frame- 16. The brake preferably comprises a pair of canting plates which engage, with a wedging action, a rod 50 pivotally connected to the head section. The mattress support may comprise a series of transversely extending, longitudinally spaced slots 90 connected together by longitudinal webs 92 of textile material and resting on longitudinal bars 94 with only the outermost slot connected to the bars 94. A mattress for use on the bed may comprise one thick layer of flexible foam sandwiched between and bonded to two thinner outer layers of foam material of lower density than the thicker layer. The layers of foam material may be enclosed within an envelope of water-proofed woven nylon. The positions at which the mattress flexes when the bed sections 26, 28, 30 are adjusted may be defined by V-sectioned grooves.
