Abstract

1417676 Casting processes CENTRE DE BECHERCHES METALLUBGIQUES-CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 29 April 1974 [27 April 1973] 18611/74 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions H4 C7] Molten steel being poured into an ingot mould and its subsequent effervescence (rimming) is monitored by detecting the sound emitted by the steel during these processes, by a microphone, and filtering the signal to select certain frequencies thereof, which are recorded and used to provide information as to whether the addition of oxidizing or deoxidizing agents to the ingot is necessary to result in a solidified ingot having the desired metallurgical properties. The characteristics of the recorded acoustic energy are determined by comparison with results obtained from a statistic study based on a large number of ingots. In the embodiment described, graphs (not shown) are given for measurements of selectively frequent filtered components, which results may be processed to exclude external factors influencing the measurement, curves 1 and 2 in Figs. 1 and 2, showing the evolution of noise emitted by two ingots. The first ingot in curve 1 shows good behaviour, the second ingot, curve 2 exemplifies bad behaviour. Fig. 1 shows the 8 kHz behaviour and Fig. 2 the 18 kHz behaviour. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) show the evolution of effervescence noise selectively filtered at 5 kHz and 18 kHz for a 1st satisfactory ingot (Fig. 3, not shown), and a second unsatisfactory ingot (Fig. 4, not shown).
