Abstract

1330460 Selective printing BURROUGHS CORP 15 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 52914/71 Heading B6F A print head carriage 10 is traversed along a print line under control of signals derived from electronic logic responsive to timing pulses generated from a continuously rotating shaft 22, the control signals acting on variable drive means coupling the shaft 22 to the print head carriage drive lead screw 12. The variable drive means comprises a low ratio gear coupling 38, 40, 34 acting on a shaft 26 through friction coupling between the ring gear 34 and a disc 42, and a spring clutch (Fig. 3, not shown) connecting the disc 42 to the shaft 26, a high-ratio belt drive 58 coupling the shaft 22 to the shaft 26 on actuation of an electromagnetic clutch 54, a forward drive clutch 62 and a reverse drive clutch 60. Intermittent drive to the lead screw 12 is achieved by a brake assembly 74 actuated on each revolution of the shaft 22. The brake comprises latches 76 acting on a toothed wheel 72. For continuous drive to the lead screw, a solenoid 84 may be energized to withdraw the latches away from the wheel 72.
