Abstract

1489792 Selective printing TELETYPE CORP 1 May 1975 [8 May 1974] 18314/75 Heading B6F Line feed of platen 39 is effected by the selective engagement of platen gear 102 with gear 107 when solenoid 97 is energized. Stepping motor 22, which drives a carriage 17 carrying a needle printer 15 by rotation of lead screw 20 also drives gear 107. Thus motor 22 can simultaneously effect character spacing and line feed. The screw 20 and gears can be proportioned so that a single line feed occurs for every character space moved by the carriage 17. Solenoid 97 is energized for normal single line feed when the carriage is outside the printing margin. Gear 102 is on a plate 105 pivoted about pin 118 and its drive is transmitted to the platen 39 by an Oldham coupling, Fig. 9 (not shown). Energizing the solenoid 97 pivots armature 99 about pin 138 so that its end 99a rocks the plate 105 to engage gears 102, 107. As gear 102 is then caused to rotate, a ratchet arm pivoted about pin 143 and coupled to the armature by pin 138 is rocked by ratchet wheel 144 towards the solenoid 97. As it is still energized, the end 99c is attracted and the ratchet arm held clear of wheel 144. The solenoid 97 may remain energized to permit multiple line feed without the ratchet having to re-engage for each line space of the multiple feed.
