Abstract

Cyclic ester anhydrides having an acid number less than 10, are produced by heating a polymeric a -hydroxycarboxylic acid alkyl ester, where the alkyl group contains 1-5 C atoms, to a temperature within the range of 200 DEG C. to 280 DEG C. The polymeric a -hydroxycarboxylic acid alkyl ester is obtained by slowly heating the monomeric a -hydroxycarboxylic acid alkyl ester to a temperature not greater than 260 DEG C. in the presence of 0.1% to 5%, calculated on the weight of the ester, of a metal of main Group IV of the Periodic Table, or a compound of such a metal at normal or reduced pressure not less than 15 mm. Hg. for about 1-20 hours. On further heating of the polymeric a -hydroxycarboxylic acid alkyl ester at a temperature of 200 DEG C. to 280 DEG C. under reduced pressure not greater than 15 mm. Hg. or preferably in vacuo, in the presence of the same catalyst as above, and distilling the mixture under reduced pressure the cyclic ester anhydride is obtained.
