Abstract

Polymethylene terephthalates free from polyglycol units are made by esterifying terephthalic acid with a glycol of formula HO (CH2)nOH, where n = 2-10 in presence of an alkali metal salt of terephthalic acid and polycondensing the resulting ester. The salt may be formed in situ by adding an alkali metal hydroxide to the reaction mixture. The initial esterification is effected at atmospheric or super-atmospheric pressure and the final polycondensation at reduced pressure (e.g. 0.5 mm. of Hg.).
