It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a method and apparatus for preventing rear-end collisions available, whereby the risk of rear-end collision is reduced from the rear.
- a) determination of the airspeed of the first motor vehicle,
- b) determining the relative speed between the first motor vehicle and a second motor vehicle,
- c) determining the distance between the first and the second motor vehicle,
- d) calculating the time remaining until the two motor vehicles collide with one another taking into account a predetermined value for the deceleration of the second motor vehicle and
- e) triggering an action on the first motor vehicle if the time calculated in step d) is below a predetermined value.
The steps a) to c) according to the invention provide the data necessary for the calculation of the time remaining until the two vehicles collide with each other if the data obtained by means of steps a) to c) are used nothing changes. By taking into account a predetermined value for the deceleration of the second motor vehicle, the fact is taken into account that the rear motor vehicle does not have to maintain its current speed, but that it is possible for the driver of the rear motor vehicle to initiate a braking operation. As a result, an action is triggered only if there is an acute risk of a collision. A too frequent triggering of the action is prevented, which leads to a habituation effect on the driver, so that he may not intervene when it actually comes to avoid a rear-end collision, as he believes that it is again a "blind alarm" , By triggering an action according to the invention on the first motor vehicle when the time calculated in step d) is below a predetermined value, it is possible for both the driver of the first motor vehicle and the driver of the second motor vehicle to be made aware of the imminent imminent collision become. As a result, both the driver of the first motor vehicle and the driver of the second motor vehicle can initiate measures that lead to a prevention of the collision. The inventive method does not require that the driver of the first motor vehicle triggers the action which warns the driver of the second motor vehicle, but this happens automatically as soon as the calculated time for a possible collision is below a predetermined value. The second motor vehicle does not require a receiver in the method according to the invention, so that this method can act on all second motor vehicles, even if they have only a normal standard equipment. Due to the observation according to the invention of the rear traffic area of the first motor vehicle, the traffic coming from behind is closely monitored, which is only possible by the driver of the first motor vehicle through the rearview mirrors. However, every glance into a rear-view mirror deflects the driver from the traffic situation in front of him, thereby increasing the risk of collision with a vehicle in front. In addition, an estimate of the relative speed of a subsequent motor vehicle on the rearview mirrors is difficult and it is difficult for the driver of the first motor vehicle to detect early any risk of rear-end collision. This takes over the device for him, so that each dangerous situation is detected and the appropriate countermeasures can be initiated so that a collision can be prevented.
The invention provides that before carrying out step d) the vehicle type of the second motor vehicle is identified and for the calculation in step d) the maximum deceleration applicable for this vehicle type is used. As a result, the method is modified so that it makes an even more accurate calculation of the time in which a collision is to be feared with respect to every other motor vehicle. This also avoids frequent triggering of an action in situations that are not necessarily dangerous. For example, if the second motor vehicle has a deceleration value that is much larger than that of another type of vehicle, the action may be triggered for the vehicle type having the greater deceleration at a later time since such a motor vehicle may still be decelerated hard enough, without a collision taking place, even if a motor vehicle with lower deceleration even a collision with the first motor vehicle would bring about. Again, this leads to avoiding all too frequent and unnecessary triggering of an action. The recognition of the vehicle type may preferably be made via an electronic camera, which is preferably installed in the rear of the first motor vehicle, by comparing the image registered by the camera with a database in which the front views of many vehicle types are stored. In the case of a match, the associated value is retrieved from a second database in which the delay values for the individual vehicle types are stored and inserted into the algorithm for calculating the time until the collision.
An advantageous development of the invention provides that the action is a triggering of an optical signal, in particular the hazard warning lights of the first motor vehicle. After the hazard warning lights stand for a danger and the attention of the driver of the second motor vehicle is directed by the rhythmic flashing of the hazard warning lights on this, this signal is particularly suitable for the driver of the second motor vehicle reacts quickly to the dangerous situation and a collision are thus prevented can. By reacting quickly to the driver of the second motor vehicle for this remains on the one hand more time to initiate the appropriate measures that prevent a collision, and on the other hand are usually given even more diverse options on how to avoid this collision, so that he choose the one that looks best.
A further advantageous development of the invention provides that the action is a triggering of an acoustic signal, in particular the horn of the first motor vehicle. The horn is, like the hazard warning light, a signal that is used to warn of a danger and attracted much attention. By such an acoustic signal not only the driver of the second motor vehicle is made aware of the imminent collision, but also the driver of the first motor vehicle, so that this can also initiate appropriate measures that can contribute to preventing a collision.
A further advantageous development of the invention provides that the road conditions are taken into account for the calculation in step d). Since the maximum possible deceleration of a motor vehicle depends not only on its brake system, but also on the respective road conditions, this measure also leads to a more accurate calculation of the time to a collision. For example, the maximum possible deceleration is less with wet road surface than with dry road and with snow-covered road this is even lower. Furthermore, the maximum deceleration also depends on the condition of the respective road. Thus, the maximum achievable deceleration on a gravel road is significantly lower than on a tarred road.
A further advantageous development of the invention provides that the action is an intervention in the engine management of the first motor vehicle, in particular that this is accelerated. As a result, additional security is given to the effect that there is no collision between the second and the first motor vehicle, since even if the driver of the first motor vehicle does not perceive the danger threatening from behind, his motor vehicle automatically reacts to this danger and it brings to a distance to the second motor vehicle, by which a collision between the two vehicles can be avoided. Due to the automatic acceleration, the driver of the first motor vehicle is additionally given an indication that a danger is approaching from behind, so that in addition to the automatic acceleration, he can make further measures to prevent a collision.
A further advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the intervention in the engine management by the driver of the first motor vehicle can be prevented.
As a result, the driver of the first motor vehicle can avoid a collision with a motor vehicle traveling in front of him, if there is not enough space available between his motor vehicle and the vehicle traveling in front of it for such an acceleration. A prevention of a collision with a following motor vehicle should not be prevented as a rule by a collision with a preceding motor vehicle takes place.
A further advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the rear traffic area is monitored at a distance of about 150 m. Such a distance is usually sufficient so that a collision can be prevented by the method according to the invention. Monitoring the traffic volume beyond an excessively long distance would not increase the safety of the procedure and, in turn, may lead to frequent triggering of the signal, even if the danger of collision is not acute. This would bring back to the already described habituation of the driver, who would then probably not respond to the signal in a really acute danger.
The object is also achieved by a device having the features of
