Abstract

Invention Patent: "USE OF ADAPTIVE GAIN QUANTIFICATION AND NON-UNIFORM SYMBOL LENGTHS FOR AUDIO CODING". Techniques such as Huffman coding can be used to represent digital audio signal components more efficiently, using symbols of non-uniform length, which can be represented by other coding techniques using symbols of uniform length. Unfortunately, the coding efficiency that can be obtained by Huffman coding depends on the probability density function of the information to be coded, and the Huffman coding process itself requires considerable processing and memory resources. A coding process that uses an adaptive gain quantification in accordance with the present invention may include the advantage of using symbols of non-uniform length, while eliminating the drawbacks of Huffman coding. In an adaptive gain quantification, the magnitudes of signal components to be encoded are compared with one or more limits and placed in classes, according to the results of the comparison. The magnitudes of the components placed in one of the classes are modified according to a gain factor, which is related to the limit used for the classification of the components. Preferably, the gain factor can be expressed as a function of the limit value only. An adaptive gain quantification can be used for encoding frequency subband signals in split band audio coding systems. Additional aspects including cascading adaptive gain quantification, intraframe coding, split interval and non-overload quantifiers are shown.
