A HERBICIDAL COMPOSITION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a herbicidal composition.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Urea and ammonium nitrate mixtures, commonly referred to as UAN, are well known in the art and are generally used as fertilizers. It has been known to use UAN having equal quantities by mass of urea and ammonium nitrate as an adjuvant to certain herbicides. Although this mixture has been found to be fairly effective as an adjuvant in certain instances, it does suffer the disadvantage that the ratio of urea to ammonium nitrate is not a standard ratio used in the production of fertilizers in many countries and thus requires special batching procedures.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to provide a herbicidal composition which will at least partially alleviate some of the abovementioned problems.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with this invention there is provided a herbicidal composition comprising a herbicide and an adjuvant, wherein the adjuvant comprises an ammonium salt and diaminomethanal in the ratio 1 to less than 1 by weight.
P1977ZA00/COMPLETE (4 Herbicidal Composition) }
Further features of the invention provide for the ratio of ammonium salt to diaminomethanal to be 1. 0.7-0.8 by weight, preferably 1:0.76; for the ammonium salt to be ammonium nitrate; for the adjuvant to include less than 30% by weight of water; and for the adjuvant to have a specific gravity of 1.27 to 1.29, and contain 28% nitrogen.
Still further features of the invention provide for the herbicide to include bipyridylium and sulfonylurea herbicides; and for the adjuvant to be between 0.1% and 1.0% of the composition.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided for the adjuvant to further include a surfactant; for the surfactant to include a branched alcohol ethoxylate, preferably isotridecanol; for the ratio of surfactant to ammonium salt and diaminomethanal to be 30% (v/v) to 70% (v/v); for the pH of the adjuvant to be greater than 7; and for the specific gravity of the adjuvant to be 1.19.
A further feature of the invention provide for the adjuvant to be between 0.1% and 1.0% of the composition.
The invention also provides an adjuvant for a herbicide substantially as defined above. : 25 The following examples illustrate embodiments of the invention.
EXAMPLE 1
In a first embodiment of the invention an adjuvant solution containing diaminomethanal (urea) and an ammonium salt, in this embodiment ammonium nitrate, is prepared containing 957g/L urea/ammonium nitrate (UAN). This is made up from 543.29 g ammonium nitrate and 413.719 urea
P1971ZA00/COMPLETE (A Herbicidal Composition)
with a 1% variation. The remainder of the solution is water which constitutes less than 30% thereof.
The adjuvant has a specific gravity of between 1.27 and 1.29 and contains approximately 28% nitrogen.
The adjuvant can be mixed with any suitable herbicide. In this embodiment the adjuvant was mixed with bipyridylium herbicides, specifically paraquat and also with sulfonylurea herbicides, specifically sulfosulfuron and prosulfuron. The tables below illustrates the ratio of the mixtures used.
It has been found that the adjuvant significantly increases the activity of the bipyridylium and sulfonylurea herbicides. The following table indicates the effect of the adjuvant on the efficacy of prosulfuron + bromoxynil +
Complement (a mineral oil adjuvant) mixtures on two broadleaf weeds:

From this it will be apparent that the adjuvant greatly increased the long term effect of the herbicidal composition on Bilderdykia convolvuls and increased both the long term and short term effect on Chenopodium album.

The efficacy of sulfosulfuron with the adjuvant for the control of Bromus diandrus in wheat in the Western Cape 19 days after application (first evaluation) is shown in the following table: 5

It will be noted that a remarkable increase in efficacy was achieved through the use of the adjuvant with the herbicide.
The effect of the adjuvant on the herbicidal efficacy of paraquat on broadleaf weed spectrum is illustrated in the following table:

Again it will be noted that a remarkable increase in efficacy was achieved through the use of the adjuvant with the herbicide.
EXAMPLE 2
P1977ZA00/COMPLETE (4 Herbicidal Composition)
In a second embodiment of the invention a UAN solution having the same ammonium nitrate and urea composition as that described in Example 1 is mixed with a branched alcohol ethoxylate surfactant, in this embodiment isotridecanol. This surfactant is commonly available under the brand name “Marlipal 013/90" and also “Villa 51”. The solution is 70% UAN to 30% (v/v)
Villa 51.
A small amount of ammonium hydroxide is added to increase the pH to above 7 and the adjuvant has a specific gravity of 1.19.
The adjuvant has been used with sulfonylurea herbicides in the following mixture in the treatment of Richardia braziliensis:
I Le 51(Isotridecanol
Adjuvant
The adjuvant was found to significantly increase the activity of paraquat as will be seen from the results above.
The adjuvant provided in the above Examples shows surprisingly good enhancement of herbicidal activity and has the added benefit that it is relatively easy to manufacture using a standard 32% UAN. This avoids the need for special UAN formulations.
It will be appreciated that many other embodiments of a herbicidal composition and adjuvant for a herbicide exist which fall within the scope of the invention, particularly regarding the herbicide and the amount of adjuvant added thereto. For example, although the Examples illustrate the adjuvant as between 0.1% and 1.0% of the herbicidal composition which is administered a spray solution, it will be appreciated that any suitable amount can be used.
P1977ZA00/COMPLETE (4 Herbicidal Composition)
Also, the herbicide need not be a bipyridylium or sulfonylurea herbicide, or combination of these, but could be any suitable herbicide or mixture of herbicides.
