* FIELD OF THE INVENTION DE

The invention applies to a device and method for attaching skirting, panels or similar structures to walls.

BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION

Methods to secure skirting to walls usually include either nails/screws or adhesives or a combination of the above.

When using nails, screws, rivets or the like to secure skirting or panels to a surface, the fastening members are inserted into the wall through the skirting/panel. This leaves the head of the member visible, which is not always aesthetically pleasing.

Using adhesives has other drawbacks. Not only are they difficult to work with, but can also be messy.

It is an object of this invention to provide an alternative device and method, without the above drawbacks.

THE INVENTION

According to the invention a device for attaching panels to structures comprises a part for insertion into the structure and a oppositely disposed protruding member, the member being adapted to secure the panel to the structure.

In a preferred for of the invention the device consists of a screw/nail adapted to include a sharpened pin extending in the opposite direction from the head thereof.

. A plug may be provided for insertion into the structure prior to the insertion of the device, thus assisting to anchor the screw or nail part of the device in the structure.

The device may include a special tool to facilitate the insertion into the plug or into the wall. In a preferred form of the invention the tool includes a head with a cavity to accommodate the pin section of the device, while abutting the flange or head section of the screw. In this form of the invention the device is placed in the tool and hammered into the plug.

The method of using the device may include the steps of drilling holes in the structure at predetermined distances, inserting the plugs into the holes, urging the device into the plugs using the special tool. :

At this stage only the sharpened pins will be protruding from the original holes.

Finally the panel or skirting may be placed in position and a mallet or other suitable tool may be used to hammer the panel into place.

EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION

An embodiment of the invention is described below with specific reverence to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side view of the device according to the invention, : and

Figure 2 is a sectional side view of the device in use.

In the drawings a device 10 comprises a screw-part 12 and a sharpened pin 14 extending from the head 16 of the screw part. The device further includes a plug 18 and a special tool (not shown) which is used for insertion of the device and the plugs into walls or similar structures.

/ » "In use (Figure 2) holes 20 are drilled into a wall 22 and the plugs are hammered into place. Following this step the device is hammered into the plug using a special tool (not shown) which does not damage or blunten the pin-part of the device.

At this stage only the pin protrudes from the hole.

The final step is to hammer the panel or skirting 24 into place using a mallet or similar tool which does not damage the panel — the pin thereby securing the panel to the wall.

1. A device for attaching panels to structures comprising a part for insertion into the structure and an oppositely disposed protruding member, the member being adapted to secure the panel to the structure.

2. A device for attaching panels to structures as claimed in claim 1 in which the device consists of a screw or a nail adapted to include a sharpened pin extending in the opposite direction from the head thereof.

3. A device for attaching panels to structures as claimed in claims 1 or 2 in which a plug is provided for insertion into the structure prior to the insertion of the device. 4, A device for attaching panels to structures as claimed in claim 3 in which the plug assists to anchor the screw or nail part of the device in the structure. A device for attaching panels to structures as claimed in any of the above claims which includes a special tool to facilitate the insertion of the device into the plug or into the structure.

J - / . A device for attaching panels to structures as claimed in claim 5 in which the tool includes a head with a cavity to accommodate the pin section of the device, while abutting the flange or head section of the screw.

7. A method for attaching panels to structures including the steps of drilling holes in the structure at predetermined distances, inserting the plugs into the holes, urging the device into the plugs using the special tool, placing the panel or skirting in position and using a mallet or other suitable tool to hammer the panel into place.
