Description

005,,, rs . .2- 849
THIS INVENTION relates to a charger for a mobile phone battery.
Any reference herein to a mobile phone must be interpreted as a reference to a handheld mobile telephone.
It is known that most mobile phones are powered by rechargeable batteries. Chargers are available for charging such batteries from power supplies such as mains power supplies, vehicle batteries, and the like. A carrier of a mobile phone may, however, find himself wishing to make a call at a time when the phone battery is completely discharged and no such power supply is available. The charger of the invention aims to assist in this type of situation.
According to the invention there is provided a charger for a mobile phone battery including a battery; a dynamo, which has a hand crank handle, for charging the battery; and a phone connector for connecting the charger battery to a charge connector of a mobile phone for charging the phone battery from the charger battery.
MAES
07949
The charger battery is operatively charged by cranking the crank handle of the dynamo.
With the charger battery sufficiently charged, it may be used for charging a mobile phone battery. It is envisaged that the charger of the invention will be suitable for charging a mobile phone battery to a charge level at which a limited duration call may be made from the phone.
The charger may include a housing for its dynamo and battery. The housing may define a hand grip formation for gripping it during cranking of the handle. The crank handle of the charger may have an operative position, in which it stands proud of the housing and may be used to crank the dynamo, and an inoperative position, in which it is tucked against the housing. In its inoperative position, it may particularly be at least partially received within a recess defined for it in the housing.
The charger may include a cord connected to its battery and carrying its phone connector at its free end. The charger may have more than one phone connector, each matched to a different type of mobile phone.
The charger may include a push-to-connect switch between its battery and its phone connector. As such, in use of the charger, after charging the charger battery via the crank handle and connecting the charger to a mobile phone, the switch is pushed to effect charging of the phone battery. Where the charger includes a housing, the switch may be carried on the housing.
It is submitted that the charger of the invention provides a convenient and economic means for charging a mobile phone battery when no power supply for doing so is available.
The invention is described below by way of an example of a charger for a mobile phone, in accordance with the invention, with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings. In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a diagrammatic general view of an embodiment of a mobile phone charger, in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 shows a circuit diagram of the charger of Figure 1.
In Figure 1, an embodiment of a charger for mobile phone, in accordance with the invention, is designated generally by the reference numeral 10. The charger 10 includes several components of which a housing 12, a cord 14, a phone connector 16, and a crank handle 18 are shown here.
Figure 2 shows a circuit diagram of the charger of Figure 1. The circuit of the charger 10 includes a dynamo 20, which may be cranked via the crank handle 18 of Figure 1, a battery 22, a push-to-connect switch 24, and contacts 26 of the connector 16 of Figure 1. The dynamo 20, the battery 22, and the switch 24 are housed in the housing 12 (see
Figure 1). The switch 24 has a push button (not shown) carried on the outside of the housing.
With reference again to Figure 1, the housing 12 defines two opposite hand grip formations 28 (only one shown) via which it may be securely held. The handle 18 is shown in an operative position thereof, in which it stands proud of the housing 12 and may be used to crank the dynamo 20 (see Figure 2). This may be done particularly by gripping a knob 30 rotatably mounted on the free end of an arm part 31 of the handle 18. The handle 18 has also an inoperative position, in which the arm part 31 is tucked against the housing 12 and the knob 30 is received within a recess 32 defined by the housing 12 to provide a compact storage configuration of the charger 10.
With reference to the drawings generally, the operation of the charger 10 will now be described in relation to a mobile phone (not shown) of which the battery is completely discharged. With the handle 18 in its operative position as shown in Figure 1 and with the housing 12 firmly held, the handle 18 is cranked. Such cranking causes charging of the charger battery 22. Once the charger battery 22 has been sufficiently charged, the phone connector 16 is connected to the charge connector of the phone. The push button (not shown) of the switch 24 is depressed and the phone battery is charged from the charger battery. When the phone battery has been sufficiently charged to permit the making of a limited duration call, the button of the switch 24 is released.
The charger 10 illustrated includes a single phone connector. An alternative embodiment of the charger of the invention (not shown) may have more than one phone connector, each matched to a different type of mobile phone.
