Description
634559 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1952-1969 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED "AUXILIARY POWER SUPPLY FOR HAND-HELD MOBILE RADIO TERMINAL" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us:- This invention concerns a portable communication terminal, preferably a personal mobile telephone which is connected by radio with other terminals or a communication system, and whose power is provided by primary batteries or rechargeable batteries.
Such equipment is used in order to be able to transmit speech, data or video signals, as far as possible independently of the place of transmission.
Personal mobile telephones, which are generally powered by rechargeable batteries, have attained a "pocket format" allowing one-handed operation. Although special measures are taken to reduce the power requirement of these terminals to a minimum, the rechargeable batteries required for portable operation only have a low capacity, because of their small size, and therefore often need to be recharged after only one hour's operation. The operating time is drastically reduced if the terminal is operated in a hands-free mode, since this considerably increases the power required.
Therefore, existing terminals have the disadvantage that they are not available, or only usable in a limited way, during the battery recharging process. This disadvantage is especially great when the batteries fail when one is travelling, arnd there is no possibility to procure new batteries or recharge the available ones.
It is, therefore, the object of the invention to provide a power supply for the equipments mentioned above in such a way that they can operate without batteries, at the very least for emergency.
The solution according to the invention is to include an already known hand-operated generator in the power supply. Since the hand-operated generator is driven by muscle power, only the endurance of the operator limits the operating time.
The hand-operated generator can be used to power the equipment directly, or it can be used during breaks. in conversation to charge the batteries. For this purpose, a further development of the invention allows the hand-operated generator to be connected either to the equipment supply, or to the battery charging circuit.
The design of the invention can be further extended to ensure that an optical and/or acoustic alarm is given when switching over to the hand-operated generator if further use of the equipment is required.
According to a further development of the invention, the power circuits are automatically switched to the hand-operated generator when the battery voltage falls below a pre-determined level. In this situation, the handoperated generator allows emergency operation in the case of battery failure.
At least an emergency call can be sent, or a short conversation conducted.
Existing hand-operated generators are generally operated either by a hand t4 0 crank, or by a lever connected to a rack which, in turn, drives the generator via a pinion. The latter alternative is used in a further development of the invention. Control of the revolutions per minute is mostly achieved by means of a fly-wheel, or by a regulating oircuit. After reaching the end of their travel, the operating lever and rack are returned to the initial position by a restoring spring.
A particularly advantageous development has the operating lever protruding from one of the side walls of the terminal. This enables one-handed provision of power to take place.
In the following, the invention is further described with the aid of the example shown in the drawing.
The drawing shows a known personal mobile telephone 1 with an aerial 4, a keypad 6, a display 5 and a battery compartment 7. In the terminal 1 there is a hand-operated generator with operating lever 3 projecting from the side wall 2 so that it can be moved backwards and forwards between the two limiting positions shown. This movnient is transmitted via a rack to a pinion, which is connected to a fly-wheel via a one-way coupling. The one-way coupling ensures that only the energy of one direction of travel of the rack is transmitted to the fly-wheel, and that the rack is returned to its initial position in a free-wheeling state by the restoring spring. Since the function of a handoperated generator is well known, it will not be described further here.
Claims (2)
1. A hand-held mobile radio communication terminal having power supply means comprising battery means and a manually operated dynamo, the output of the battery means and the output of the dynamo being applied individually to the output of the power supply means via a change over switch, wherein the battery means comprise rechargeable batteries, the terminal including a charging circuit via which the batteries can be recharged, and wherein the output of the dynamo is connectable by switching means to the charging circuit to charge the battery means.
2. A terminal as claimed in claim 1, including voltage detector means to detect whether the voltage of the battery means is below a predetermined level, the de- tector means operating the change over switch to apply the output of the dynamo to the output of the power supply means when the voltage of the battery means is o 44 below the predetermined level.
