PORTABLE OVEN

FIELD OF INVENTION

This invention relates to a novel portable oven that can be used both indoors in an existing braai or fire place and outdoors.

BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION

Family meals in South Africa are traditionally cooked either on a conventional braai which is set in an outside environment or alternatively in the kitchen where the meal is cooked in an electric or gas powered oven. This clearly only allows for the conventional cooking of roasts and similar oven related meals in 16 the indoor environment. A conventional electric or gas powered oven requires the use of energy sources such as electricity and gas respectively.

This invention seeks to at least in part overcome these disadvantages.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

A portable oven according to the invention comprises a steel body defining a cooking cavity provided with a front aperture, a steel door for closing the aperture and legs for providing a space for making a fire beneath the steel body.

Preferably the oven body has a rectangular shape.

Also the oven may be provided with slides on the floor of the oven to support an oven dish and keep it away from the oven floor.

Also the oven may include slides mounted on the sidewalls for supporting a second oven dish.

Also the oven may include formations on the top outer surface of the oven for holding burning fuel or coals and supporting a cooking dish.

The formations may comprise a flat iron bar bent into a u shape.

In another form of the invention, an oven as described above may be included as part of a fireplace or built in braai. The oven may be either fixed or removable.

Figure 1 is a perspective schematic view of a portable oven according to the invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The structure of the portable oven 5 can best be seen from Figure 1. The invention comprises a rectangular steel body 1 which defines the oven cavity.

The body 1 may be made from 3mm mild steel plate bent and welded as required. The oven 1 is designed to take a standard oven tray or stainless steel dish fitted with a loose stainless steel rack on feet approximately 30 mm high. On the front there is a steel door 2 which lifts up to open and close and is secured to the body 1 by bullet hinges 7. The door 2 may be opened and flipped back over the body 1. A u-bent fiat bar 4 is welded to the top of the body 1. A fire and coals may be made here and can be used for starting a dish such as a tray of potatoes. The oven rests on four steel legs 3 of square tubing or the like. The legs 3 may be 120 to 150 mm high and allow for a fire to be made under the oven. The oven has two flat bar slides 8 running from front to back. The oven tray is placed on these and is kept away from the hot oven floor. An extra pair of slides 11 may be included higher up in the oven for holding a further oven tray.

During cooking the tray is partly filled with water. This allows for the food to be cooked using steam. The cooking dish containing the desired food is placed

. N onto the two steel flat bar slides 8 in order to keep it raised from the bottom of the steel body 1. This is to ensure that the food in the cooking dish is not too close to the fire source which is placed in the raised space 9 provided under the portable oven 5 by means of the four steel legs 3.Coals or burning wood are placed in the space 9 in order to create the heat necessary for cooking a desired food type.

The steel door-plate 2 is then lowered in order to seal the portable oven 5.

The weight of the steel door-plate 2 is sufficient to keep the door in a closed position.

The oven may be used indoors in an existing fireplace or braai, or out doors. It is suited to making a variety of dishes such as meat fish, chicken, vegetables, pizzas and breads. The food is not exposed to carcinogenic influences as with an open fire.

It will be appreciated that the oven can be made in a number of different shapes and sizes without detracting from the nature of the invention.

Claims

1. A portable oven comprising a steel body defining a cooking cavity provided with a front aperture, a steel door for closing the aperture and legs for providing a space for making a fire beneath the steel body.

2. An oven as claimed in claim 1 in which the body has a rectangular shape.

3. An oven as claimed in claim 2 in which there are provided slides on the floor of the oven to support an oven dish and keep it away from the oven floor.

4. An oven as claimed in claim 3 which includes slides mounted on the sidewalls for supporting a second oven dish.

5. An oven as claimed in any of the preceding claims which includes formations on the top outer surface of the oven for holding burning fuel or coais.

6. An oven as claimed in claim 5 in which the formations comprise a flat iron bar bent into a u shape.

7. An oven as claimed in any of the preceding claims which is built into a braai or fireplace.

8. An oven substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
