Definitions
- This disclosure relates to an optical comb control device and an optical comb control method.
- An optical comb (optical frequency comb) is known, which is an ultrashort pulse laser having multiple frequency modes (longitudinal modes) arranged at equal intervals like a comb on the frequency axis.
- An optical comb is expressed by two parameters: a repetition frequency f rep and an offset frequency f CEO .
- Optical combs are used, for example, to evaluate the absolute frequency and stability of optical atomic clocks (see, for example, Non-Patent Document 1).
- Non-Patent Document 1 the following process is performed to obtain an optical comb for evaluating optical atomic clocks (i.e., an optical comb whose frequencies (f rep and f CEO ) are stabilized to a reference optical atomic clock of the same type as the optical atomic clock to be evaluated).
- an optical comb for evaluating optical atomic clocks i.e., an optical comb whose frequencies (f rep and f CEO ) are stabilized to a reference optical atomic clock of the same type as the optical atomic clock to be evaluated.
- two parameters of the optical comb f rep , f CEO
- control is performed to stabilize the offset frequency f CEO to a constant value based on the measurement results.
- the repetition frequency f rep is controlled so that the beat frequency f beat between the reference light output from the reference optical atomic clock and the optical comb is constant. In this way, the repetition frequency f rep of the optical comb is controlled to the stability of the reference light, and an optical comb that can be used to evaluate optical atomic clock
- the conventional method described above provides an optical comb capable of outputting microwaves controlled by the stability of the reference light.
- the method involves stabilizing the offset frequency f CEO of the optical comb to a constant value in advance based on the measurement results of the offset frequency f CEO of the optical comb.
- Measuring the offset frequency f CEO of the optical comb generally requires the construction of a 1f-2f interferometer with a complex optical configuration.
- constructing a 1f-2f interferometer requires rare components such as highly nonlinear fiber and wavelength conversion crystals. Highly nonlinear fiber, in particular, is a custom-made product manufactured only by certain fiber manufacturers and is therefore not easily available.
- the present disclosure therefore aims to provide an optical comb control device and optical comb control method that can obtain an optical comb that outputs microwaves controlled by the stability of the reference light using a simple and inexpensive configuration.
- This disclosure includes the following optical comb control devices [1] to [7] and optical comb control method [8].
- an optical comb generator that generates an optical comb having a plurality of frequency modes arranged in a comb shape on a frequency axis; an optical multiplexing unit that multiplexes the optical comb with reference light having a predetermined reference wavelength; an optical detection unit that detects the beat frequency between the optical comb and the reference light and the repetition frequency of the optical comb by detecting the light multiplexed by the optical multiplexer; a first control unit that receives the beat frequency detected by the light detection unit and controls the repetition frequency so that the beat frequency is stabilized at a constant value; a second control unit that receives the repetition frequency detected by the optical detection unit and controls an offset frequency of the optical comb so that the repetition frequency is stabilized at a constant value;
- An optical comb control device comprising:
- the optical comb control device [1] above includes a first control unit that controls the repetition frequency so that the beat frequency is stabilized to a constant value, and a second control unit that controls the offset frequency so that the repetition frequency is stabilized to a constant value.
- a frequency repetition frequency and offset frequency
- this control it is not necessary to stabilize the offset frequency to a constant value in advance, and therefore there is no need to construct a 1f-2f interferometer to measure the offset frequency. Therefore, with the optical comb control device described above, it is possible to obtain an optical comb that outputs microwaves controlled to the stability of the reference light with a simple and inexpensive configuration.
- the first control unit stabilizes the beat frequency to a constant value, and then the second control unit controls the offset frequency so that the repetition frequency remains constant, thereby enabling smoother stabilization of the optical comb parameters (repetition frequency and offset frequency). More specifically, by first stabilizing the beat frequency using the first control unit, the main cause of fluctuations in the repetition frequency can be limited to the offset frequency. By executing control using the second control unit in this state, the repetition frequency can be stabilized to a constant value, and as a result, the offset frequency can also be stabilized to a constant value. As a result, an optical comb with stabilized repetition frequency and offset frequency based on the reference light can be efficiently obtained.
- the configuration [3] above makes it possible to execute the control of the first and second control units described above for reference light of various reference wavelengths.
- the wavelength of the optical comb can be changed in the wavelength conversion unit to shift the wavelength range of the optical comb, thereby causing interference between the optical comb and the reference light and enabling the appropriate generation of a beat frequency.
- the optical comb generator includes a pump laser that outputs pump light, and a laser resonator that receives the pump light from the pump laser and generates the optical comb;
- the optical comb control device according to any one of [1] to [3], wherein the first control unit controls the repetition frequency by controlling a resonator length of the laser resonator.
- control of the first control unit (control of the repetition frequency) can be easily performed by adjusting the resonator length of the laser resonator included in the optical comb generator.
- the optical comb generator includes a pump laser that outputs pump light, and a laser resonator that receives the pump light from the pump laser and generates the optical comb;
- the optical comb control device according to any one of [1] to [5], wherein the second control unit controls the offset frequency by controlling the excitation light intensity of the excitation laser.
- the control of the second control unit (offset frequency control) can be easily performed by adjusting the excitation light intensity of the excitation laser included in the optical comb generator.
- the configuration [7] above allows for easy and reliable control of the second control unit (offset frequency control) through feedback control based on the repetition frequency and the second reference wave signal.
- An optical comb control method comprising:
- the optical comb control method [8] above includes a fourth step of controlling the repetition frequency so that the beat frequency is stabilized at a constant value, and a fifth step of controlling the offset frequency so that the repetition frequency is stabilized at a constant value.
- This disclosure makes it possible to provide an optical comb control device and optical comb control method that can obtain an optical comb that outputs microwaves controlled by the stability of the reference light using a simple and inexpensive configuration.

- the resonator length adjustment unit 13 is configured by an EOM that can be controlled at higher speeds.
- the resonator length adjustment unit 13 is configured to change the resonator length of the laser resonator 12 based on an electrical signal (control signal) output from the signal control unit 63 of the first control unit 6, which will be described later.

Note that if the original wavelength range of the optical comb L1 output from the optical comb generator 1 includes the reference wavelength of the reference light L2, the wavelength conversion unit 3 may be omitted.
- the optical combiner 4 combines the optical comb L1 and the reference light L2.
- the optical combiner 4 is composed of, for example, a beam splitter, a fiber coupler, etc.
- the optical comb L1 is optically mixed with the reference light L2 output from the optical atomic clock 2 via the optical combiner 4.
- the optical detection unit 5 detects the light (optical mixing output) multiplexed by the optical multiplexing unit 4.
- the optical detection unit 5 is configured with, for example, a photodetector.
- the optical detection unit 5 detects the beat frequency f beat between the optical comb L1 and the reference light L2 and the repetition frequency f rep of the optical comb L1 by detecting the optical mixing output from the optical multiplexing unit 4.
- the beat frequency f beat detected by the optical detection unit 5 is output to the first control unit 6 for feedback control of the repetition frequency f rep .
- the repetition frequency f rep detected by the optical detection unit 5 is extracted and used externally, and is also output to the second control unit 7 for feedback control of the offset frequency f CEO .
- the beat frequency f beat is the frequency of a beat generated by interference between two waves (the optical comb L1 and the reference light L2) with slightly different frequencies.
- Figure 3 shows an example of a state in which the nth mode frequency f n of the optical comb L1 (in this embodiment, the optical comb L1 after wavelength conversion by the wavelength conversion unit 3) is stabilized at the reference frequency f opt corresponding to the reference wavelength of the reference light L2. That is, in the example of Figure 3, the nth mode frequency f n of the multiple mode frequencies of the optical comb L1 is closest to the reference frequency f opt of the reference light L2.
- the relationship between the reference frequency f opt and the beat frequency f beat is expressed by the following equation (2):
- the sign of f beat in the following formula (2) is negative, but if the reference frequency f opt is slightly larger than the mode frequency f n , the sign of f beat in the following formula (2) is positive.
- control is performed so that the relationship shown in FIG. 3 and formula (2) holds between the reference frequency f opt and the beat frequency f beat .
- the first control unit 6 receives the beat frequency f beat detected by the optical detection unit 5 and controls the repetition frequency f rep of the optical comb L1 so that the beat frequency f beat (i.e., the detected value of the beat frequency f beat by the optical detection unit 5) is stabilized to a constant value.
- the first control unit 6 controls the repetition frequency f rep by controlling the cavity length of the laser cavity 12.
- the first control unit 6 feedback-controls the cavity length of the laser cavity 12 so that a difference signal value VD1 corresponding to the frequency difference between the beat frequency f beat detected by the light detection unit 5 and a first reference wave signal S f1 having a predetermined reference frequency f1 becomes 0.
- the first control unit 6 includes a reference oscillator 61, a frequency comparison unit 62, and a signal control unit 63 as elements for performing the feedback control.
- the reference oscillator 61 outputs the above-described first reference wave signal Sf1 (reference microwave signal).
- the reference oscillator 61 is configured to output the first reference wave signal Sf1 from an arbitrary waveform generator (for example, a function generator) using a frequency reference oscillator (for example, a hydrogen maser, a Rb microwave oscillator, etc.).
- the beat frequency f beat fluctuates around 10 MHz before stabilization.
- the reference frequency f1 of the first reference wave signal Sf1 is set to, for example, 10 MHz.
- the frequency comparison unit 62 receives the beat signal (beat frequency f beat ) detected by the photodetection unit 5 and the first reference wave signal S f1 output from the reference oscillator 61, and outputs a difference signal corresponding to the frequency difference (f beat ⁇ f1) between the beat signal and the first reference wave signal S f1 .
- the frequency comparison unit 62 is configured, for example, by a double balanced mixer or the like.
- the signal control unit 63 outputs a control signal for controlling the cavity length of the laser resonator 12 so that the value of the difference signal (difference signal value VD1) output from the frequency comparison unit 62 becomes zero.
- the signal control unit 63 is configured, for example, by a PID controller.
- the signal control unit 63 outputs a control signal to the cavity length adjustment unit 13.
- the cavity length adjustment unit 13 executes a process for changing the cavity length of the laser resonator 12 based on the control signal.
- the repetition frequency f rep of the optical comb L1 changes accordingly. Therefore, by performing the feedback control of the first control unit 6 as described above for a certain period of time, it is possible to stabilize the beat frequency f beat at the reference frequency f1 (i.e., to keep the difference between the beat frequency f beat and the reference frequency f1 within a certain range from 0).
- the second control unit 7 receives the repetition frequency f rep detected by the optical detection unit 5 and controls the offset frequency f CEO of the optical comb L1 so that the repetition frequency f rep (i.e., the value of the repetition frequency f rep detected by the optical detection unit 5) is stabilized to a constant value.
- the second control unit 7 controls the offset frequency fCEO by controlling the excitation light intensity of the excitation laser 11.
- the second control unit 7 feedback-controls the excitation light intensity of the excitation laser 11 so that a difference signal value VD2 corresponding to the frequency difference between the repetition frequency frep detected by the light detection unit 5 and a second reference wave signal Sf2 having a predetermined reference frequency f2 becomes 0.
- the second control unit 7 is configured to include a reference oscillator 71, a frequency comparison unit 72, and a signal control unit 73 as elements for performing the above feedback control.
- the reference oscillator 71 outputs the above-mentioned second reference wave signal Sf2 (reference microwave signal).
- the reference oscillator 71 is configured to output the second reference wave signal Sf2 from an arbitrary waveform generator (for example, a function generator) using a frequency reference oscillator (for example, a hydrogen maser, a Rb microwave oscillator, etc.).
- the repetition frequency frep fluctuates around 50 MHz before stabilization.
- the reference frequency f2 of the second reference wave signal Sf2 is set to, for example, 50 MHz.
- the frequency comparison unit 72 receives the repetition frequency frep detected by the optical detection unit 5 and the second reference wave signal Sf2 output from the reference oscillator 71, and outputs a difference signal corresponding to the frequency difference ( frep - f2) between the repetition frequency frep and the second reference wave signal Sf2 .
- the frequency comparison unit 72 is configured, for example, by a double balanced mixer or the like.
- the signal control unit 73 outputs a control signal to control the excitation light intensity of the excitation laser 11 so that the value of the difference signal output from the frequency comparison unit 72 (difference signal value VD2) becomes 0.
- the signal control unit 73 is configured, for example, by a PID controller.
- the signal control unit 73 outputs a control signal to the laser power supply 8, which supplies a drive current to the excitation laser 11.
- the magnitude of the drive current supplied from the laser power supply 8 to the excitation laser 11 changes based on the control signal, and the excitation light intensity of the excitation laser 11 changes.
- the offset frequency f CEO of the optical comb L1 changes accordingly. Therefore, by performing the feedback control of the second control unit 7 as described above for a certain period of time, the repetition frequency f rep can be stabilized at the reference frequency f2 (i.e., the difference between the repetition frequency f rep and the reference frequency f2 can be kept within a certain range from 0).
- the third control unit 9 controls the first control unit 6 and the second control unit 7. Specifically, the third control unit 9 controls the first control unit 6 and the second control unit 7 so that the second control unit 7 executes control of the offset frequency f CEO (feedback control for stabilizing the repetition frequency f rep ) after the first control unit 6 completes control of the repetition frequency f rep (feedback control for stabilizing the beat frequency f beat).
- the third control unit 9 may, for example, monitor the difference signal value VD1 detected in the first control unit 6 (signal control unit 63) and determine that the feedback control of the first control unit 6 is completed when the difference signal value VD1 falls within a certain range (within a predetermined error) from 0 for a predetermined period or longer.
- the third control unit 9 may control the operation of the second control unit 7 (signal control unit 73) so that the feedback control of the second control unit 7 is executed (started).
- the third control unit 9 may be configured, for example, by a computer device electrically connected to the first control unit 6 (signal control unit 63) and the second control unit 7 (signal control unit 73).
- the control by the third control unit 9 described above (i.e., the control of the execution order of the feedback control by the first control unit 6 and the second control unit 7) makes it possible to efficiently obtain an optical comb output (optical comb L1) with a stabilized repetition frequency f rep and offset frequency f CEO . The reason for this is explained below.
- the reference frequency f opt is a constant value. Therefore, as shown in the above formula (3), the beat frequency f beat depends on both the repetition frequency f rep and the offset frequency f CEO . However, since the repetition frequency f rep is multiplied by the coefficient n, the repetition frequency f rep has a greater influence as a factor determining the magnitude of the beat frequency f beat than the offset frequency f CEO . Therefore, by executing the feedback control by the first control unit 6 described above, the beat frequency f beat can be stabilized so that the fluctuation of the beat frequency f beat is within the fluctuation of the offset frequency f CEO .
- the repetition frequency f rep can be considered as a parameter with the offset frequency f CEO and the beat frequency f beat as variables.
- the beat frequency f beat is stabilized to be within the fluctuation of the offset frequency f CEO . Therefore, after the first control unit 6 executes the feedback control, the fluctuation of the repetition frequency f rep substantially depends only on the fluctuation of the offset frequency f CEO .
- stabilizing the repetition frequency f rep to a constant value after the first control unit 6 executes the feedback control is substantially equivalent to stabilizing the offset frequency f CEO to a constant value. Therefore, by executing the feedback control of the second control unit 7 after the first control unit 6 executes the feedback control to stabilize the repetition frequency f rep , the repetition frequency f rep and the offset frequency f CEO can be simultaneously stabilized.
- optical comb control device 100 optical comb control method
- step S1 the optical comb generator 1 generates an optical comb L1 having multiple frequency modes arranged in a comb-like pattern on the frequency axis.
- step S2 the optical multiplexer 4 multiplexes the optical comb L1 (in this embodiment, the optical comb output after its wavelength has been converted by the wavelength converter 3) with the reference light L2 output from the optical atomic clock 2.
- step S3 the optical detection unit 5 detects the light combined in step S2, thereby detecting the beat frequency f beat between the optical comb L1 and the reference light L2 and the repetition frequency f rep of the optical comb L1.
- steps S1 to S3 described above is continuously executed until the processing of the flowchart in Figure 4 is completed. Furthermore, while the processing of steps S1 to S3 is continuously executed, the first feedback control (step S4) and second feedback control (step S5) described below are executed in this order.
- step S4 (fourth step), the first control unit 6 controls the repetition frequency f rep so that the beat frequency f beat detected in step S3 is stabilized to a constant value.
- step S4 includes the following steps S41 to S43.
- step S41 the frequency comparison unit 62 outputs a difference signal corresponding to the frequency difference (f beat -f1 ) between the beat signal (beat frequency f beat ) detected by the photodetection unit 5 and the first reference wave signal S f1 output from the reference oscillator 61.
- step S42 the signal control unit 63 feedback-controls the cavity length of the laser cavity 12 so that the value of the difference signal (difference signal value VD1) output from the frequency comparison unit 62 becomes 0.
- the signal control unit 63 outputs a control signal for the above control to the cavity length adjustment unit 13, thereby changing the cavity length of the laser cavity 12 and changing the repetition frequency f beat of the optical comb L1 so that the difference signal value VD1 approaches 0.
- steps S41 and S42 described above are repeatedly executed until a predetermined condition is satisfied.
- the processes of steps S41 and S42 are repeated until it is determined that the beat frequency f beat has stabilized based on a predetermined criterion (step S43).
- the above determination is executed by the third control unit 9.
- the third control unit 9 determines that the beat frequency f beat has stabilized (in other words, the feedback control of the first control unit 6 has been completed) when the difference signal value VD1 detected by the first control unit 6 (signal control unit 63) remains within a certain range (within a predetermined error) from 0 for a predetermined period or more.
- step S5 the second control unit 7 controls the offset frequency f CEO so that the repetition frequency f rep detected in step S3 is stabilized to a constant value.
- step S5 includes the following steps S51 to S53.
- step S51 the frequency comparison unit 72 outputs a difference signal corresponding to the frequency difference (f rep ⁇ f2) between the repetition frequency f rep detected by the photodetection unit 5 and the second reference wave signal S f2 output from the reference oscillator 71.
- step S52 the signal control unit 73 feedback-controls the excitation light intensity of the excitation laser 11 so that the value of the difference signal (difference signal value VD2) output from the frequency comparison unit 72 becomes 0.
- the signal control unit 73 outputs a control signal for the above control to the laser power supply 8, thereby changing the excitation light intensity of the excitation laser 11 and changing the offset frequency f CEO of the optical comb L1 so that the difference signal value VD2 approaches 0.
- steps S51 and S52 described above are repeatedly executed until a predetermined condition is satisfied.
- the processes of steps S51 and S52 are repeated until it is determined that the repetition frequency f rep has stabilized based on a predetermined criterion (step S53).
- the above determination is executed by the third control unit 9.
- the third control unit 9 determines that the repetition frequency f rep has stabilized (in other words, the feedback control of the second control unit 7 has been completed) when the difference signal value VD2 detected by the second control unit 7 (signal control unit 73) remains within a certain range (within a predetermined error) from 0 for a predetermined period or more.
- the first and second feedback controls are performed to obtain an optical comb output (optical comb L1) having a repetition frequency f rep and an offset frequency f CEO controlled according to the stability of the reference light L2 output from the optical atomic clock 2.
- an optical comb that outputs a stabilized microwave (repetition frequency f rep ) based on the optical atomic clock 2 is obtained.
- the reference frequency f1 used by the first control unit 6 is set to 10 MHz
- the reference frequency f2 used by the second control unit 7 is set to 50 MHz.
- the beat frequency f beat is stabilized to 10 MHz and the repetition frequency f rep is stabilized to 50 MHz, resulting in the offset frequency f CEO also being stabilized to a constant value (17.299 MHz).
- the optical comb control device 100 described above includes a first control unit 6 that controls the repetition frequency f rep so that the beat frequency f beat is stabilized to a constant value, and a second control unit that controls the offset frequency f CEO so that the repetition frequency f rep is stabilized to a constant value.
- the optical comb control device 100 can obtain an optical comb L1 that outputs a microwave (repetition frequency f rep ) controlled to the stability of the reference light L2 with a simple and inexpensive configuration.
- the optical comb control method also includes the above-described steps S1 to S5.
- the optical comb control method includes step S4 (fourth step) of controlling the repetition frequency f rep so that the beat frequency f beat is stabilized at a constant value, and step S5 (fifth step) of controlling the offset frequency f CEO so that the repetition frequency f rep is stabilized at a constant value.
- a common method for obtaining an optical comb output with such stabilized frequencies is to measure (actually measure) the value of the offset frequency f CEO .
- the offset frequency f CEO is measured along with the repetition frequency f rep , and the measurement results are used to perform control to stabilize the offset frequency f CEO and the repetition frequency f rep at constant values.
- the offset frequency f CEO is stabilized to a constant value based on the measurement results, and then the repetition frequency f rep is stabilized to a constant value based on the measurement results.
- the optical comb control device 100 of this embodiment performs feedback control (feedback control of the second control unit 7) to stabilize the repetition frequency f rep without measuring the value of the offset frequency f CEO , thereby stabilizing both the repetition frequency f rep and the offset frequency f CEO .
- This makes it possible to obtain an optical comb L1 controlled to the stability of the reference light L2 (i.e., an optical comb capable of evaluating the stability of an optical atomic clock of the same type as the optical atomic clock 2) without using a complex and expensive optical system such as a 1f-2f interferometer.
- the optical comb control device 100 is configured so that the second control unit 7 controls the offset frequency f CEO after the first control unit 6 completes control of the repetition frequency f rep .
- the third control unit 9 controls the execution order as described above.
- the first control unit 6 stabilizes the beat frequency f beat to a constant value, and then the second control unit 7 controls the offset frequency so that the repetition frequency f rep is constant. This allows for smooth stabilization of the optical comb parameters (the repetition frequency f rep and the offset frequency f CEO ).
- the main fluctuation factor (the factor causing fluctuations) of the repetition frequency f rep can be limited to the offset frequency f CEO .
- the repetition frequency f rep can be stabilized to a constant value, and as a result, the offset frequency f CEO can be stabilized to a constant value.
- the optical comb L1 with a stabilized repetition frequency f rep and offset frequency f CEO based on the reference light L2 can be efficiently obtained.
- the optical comb control device 100 includes a wavelength converter 3 disposed between the optical comb generator 1 and the optical multiplexer 4, which converts the wavelength of the optical comb L1.
- This configuration allows the first and second controllers 6 and 7 to control the reference light L2 at various reference wavelengths. That is, when the wavelength range of the optical comb L1 output from the optical comb generator 1 does not include the reference wavelength of the reference light L2 (780 nm in this embodiment), the wavelength converter 3 changes the wavelength of the optical comb L1 to shift the wavelength range of the optical comb L1. This allows the optical comb L1 and the reference light L2 to interfere with each other, thereby appropriately generating the beat frequency f beat . As a result, the first and second controllers 6 and 7 can appropriately control the reference light L2.

Description

fm=m×frep+fCEO …(1)
fopt=n×frep+fCEO-fbeat …(2)
fbeat=n×frep+fCEO-fopt …(3)
frep=(fopt-fCEO+fbeat)/n …(4)
frep=(fopt-fCEO+fbeat)/n …(4)
ステップS2(第2ステップ)において、光合波部4は、光コムL1(本実施形態では、波長変換部3によって波長が変換された後の光コム出力)と光原子時計2から出力された参照光L2とを合波する。
