Definitions
- the present invention relates to an optical laminate for eyewear that includes a polarizing element, as well as polarized lenses and eyewear (sunglasses, goggles, etc.) that use the same.
- Sunglasses, goggles, and other eyewear often use tinted lenses to add a fashionable touch and provide anti-glare protection, and polarized lenses are also used to provide even greater anti-glare protection.
- Polarized lenses utilize the phenomenon of polarization to transmit only polarized light compared to non-polarized light; in other words, they have a polarizing function.
- Eyewear equipped with polarized lenses (commonly known as polarized sunglasses), especially when used outdoors, not only reduces direct light from outside, but also blocks reflected light (horizontally polarized, also known as S-polarized light) from passing through, and transmits only vertically polarized light (also known as P-polarized light) (a function that suppresses reflected light, also known as anti-glare), thereby reducing glare and providing clear vision even in the presence of reflected light or in backlit conditions. Eyewear with such polarization functions is not only useful for sports and leisure activities, but also enhances safety by ensuring sufficient visibility of the scenery and anti-glare properties when driving a car, etc.
- a typical method for manufacturing polarized sunglasses involves injection molding an optical laminate having a base film and a polarizing film (also called a bare polarizing film) into a single unit with a resin material that will become the lens to produce a polarized lens, and then processing the polarized lens to fit it into an eyewear frame (Patent Document 1).
- a polarizing film also called a bare polarizing film
- HUD devices head-up display devices
- Patent Document 2 HUD devices can display information from instruments on the instrument panel by projecting the information as image light onto the windshield, allowing the driver to drive while gazing ahead through the windshield and visually confirming the information. This reduces the need to move the driver's line of sight, which is expected to improve drivability and ultimately safety.
- Such HUD devices generally emit S-polarized (horizontally polarized) image light from the display unit, which is then reflected by the windshield.
- the driver of a vehicle then sees the S-polarized light reflected by the windshield as the displayed image. Therefore, if the driver is wearing polarized sunglasses, the vibration direction of the S-polarized light in the image displayed by the HUD device may overlap with the absorption axis direction of the polarizing layer of the polarized sunglasses, causing the displayed image to be blocked by the polarized sunglasses and making it impossible to see. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as "blackout.”
- Patent Document 3 discloses technology that avoids blackouts by combining optical films within the HUD device to change the polarization state in the light path.
- this is not a simple solution, as it requires complex internal device design and is expensive.
- ⁇ v represents the luminous transmittance
- Pe represents the polarization efficiency.
- Patent Document 4 discloses the use of a low-polarization film made with a dye pigment with a low dichroic ratio to prevent hue changes in polarized film during lens processing.
- this type of eyewear even though it has the glare-reducing function due to its low transmittance, it has a low ability to block reflected external light, making it difficult to achieve the desired anti-glare properties.
- sunglasses with lens categories 2 and 3 which have a high Pe, are considered to be suitable due to their high anti-glare effect, but if the anti-glare effect is excessively high, there is a risk of blackout occurring in the image displayed on the HUD device. Furthermore, because ⁇ v is kept low, there are concerns about visibility of the scenery while driving, which could compromise safety. On the other hand, sunglasses with lens category 1 have a high ⁇ v and low Pe, so while they can be expected to provide good visibility of the scenery and reduce the blackout phenomenon on HUD devices, they do not provide sufficient anti-glare properties for polarized sunglasses.
- Patent Document 5 considers preventing the blackout phenomenon of images on automobile displays, including HUD devices, by providing an external quarter-wave plate layer or super-refractive polyester film layer on the optical laminate used in polarized sunglasses.
- S-polarized external light also known as reflected light
- the S-polarized light is converted into elliptically polarized light, preventing the polarizing element from functioning and failing to provide the anti-glare properties required for reducing the glare of reflected light while driving.
- the present invention aims to provide an optical laminate that ensures the visibility of the HUD device's display and maintains the anti-glare properties of polarized sunglasses even when worn as polarized sunglasses in a vehicle equipped with a HUD device, as well as polarized lenses and eyewear that use the same.
- An optical laminate includes a first support, a second support, and a polarizing element disposed between the first support and the second support, the polarizing element contains one or more dye-based dichroic dyes having a dichroic ratio (Rd) of 38 or more at a maximum absorption wavelength ( ⁇ max);
- the optical laminate has a luminous-corrected transmittance (Ys) of 43% or more and 55% or less, and a luminous-corrected polarization degree (Py) of 78% or more and 85% or less.
- a polarized lens according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises a lens substrate and the above-described optical laminate.
- Eyewear according to an embodiment of the present invention includes the above-described polarized lenses.
- the present invention provides an optical laminate that ensures the visibility of the HUD device's display even when wearing polarized sunglasses in a vehicle equipped with a HUD device, while maintaining the anti-glare properties of polarized sunglasses, as well as polarized lenses and eyewear that use the same.

- a dye-based polarizing element containing at least one dichroic dye-based pigment with a dichroic ratio (Rd) of 38 or greater.
- dye-based polarizing elements exhibit minimal hue change or degradation of optical properties under the thermal load applied during lens processing. Furthermore, because they possess high polarization performance, they can be designed with higher transmittance.
- Such iodine-based polarizing elements are vulnerable to heat and moisture, making them unsuitable for lens processing and, furthermore, less reliable for long-term eyewear use.
- a dichroic dye is a dye that, when oriented on an alignment substrate, exhibits different absorbance in the long axis direction of the molecule than in the short axis direction.
- the dichroic ratio (Rd) is expressed as the ratio of the absorbance (Ax) in the direction of maximum transmission for linearly polarized incident light to the absorbance (Az) in the direction perpendicular to the maximum transmission direction, according to the following formula (I); the higher this value, the better the polarization characteristics.
- Rd can usually be determined by producing a polarizing element oriented under conditions that allow the dye to be oriented to the maximum extent in the alignment substrate, and then using spectroscopic measurement.
- a PVA-based resin film can typically be used as the alignment substrate.
- an optical laminate containing the dye-based polarizing element described above can meet the luminous transmittance standard of Lens Category 1 (43% ⁇ ⁇ v ⁇ 80%) and the polarization efficiency standard of Lens Category 2 (Pe ⁇ 78%) of the International Standard for Sunglasses.
- the optical laminate maintains sufficient polarization properties despite the high transmittance, it also provides effective anti-glare protection from external light, providing a safer driving environment.
- the above international standard for sunglasses is intended for personal protective equipment.
- the standard outlines the explanatory label for general-use sunglass lenses, as well as the luminous transmittance ( ⁇ v), polarization efficiency (Pe), and lens classification requirements, as outlined above.

- the luminosity-corrected orthogonal transmittance (Yc, unit: %) can be calculated from the transmittance obtained by overlapping two of the test pieces with their transmission axes or absorption axes perpendicular to one another.
- Py can be calculated by substituting these transmittances into the following formula (II). Py corresponds to the anti-glare properties when eyewear containing the optical laminate is worn, and the higher its value, the more efficiently only reflected light can be blocked.
- Ykz can be determined by measurement using polarized light as a light source (hereinafter referred to as polarized light incident measurement).
- Ykz can generally be determined by a measurement method called the absolute polarization method (Ky-Kz method), and is measured using, for example, the above-mentioned spectrophotometer, using polarized light emitted through a polarizing element having a luminosity-corrected polarization degree of 99.99% or more obtained based on ISO Z8781-2 as a light source.
- polarized light incidence measurements are performed in the visible light range (380-780 nm wavelength), usually at a 10 nm pitch or less, and preferably at a 5 nm pitch or less, under detection conditions.
- transmittance measurements are performed using a single test piece, and Ykz is calculated based on JIS Z8781-2 from the transmittance waveform for each wavelength obtained by incident polarized light perpendicular to the absorption axis.
- the light source correction value can preferably be C or D65 light source.
- Ykz is used to quantify the display visibility of a HUD device when wearing eyewear containing an optical laminate. If the Ykz value is lower than 8%, "blackout” occurs, meaning the image displayed by the HUD device is blocked by the optical laminate and cannot be fully seen. On the other hand, if the Ykz value is 8% or higher, “blackout” is suppressed and sufficient display visibility can be ensured.
- Ys when applied to eyewear, Ys is preferably 43% or more and 55% or less, and more preferably 48% or more and 51% or less, so that a more natural landscape can be viewed.
- Py is preferably 78% or more and 85% or less, and more preferably 80% or more and 83% or less, so that reflected light can be blocked more efficiently.
- Ykz is preferably 8% or more and 12% or less, and more preferably 9% or more and 11% or less, to ensure better display visibility of the HUD device. If Ykz exceeds 12%, the display visibility of the HUD device can be improved, but conversely, there is a high possibility that the anti-glare properties of the polarized eyewear will be impaired.
- the use of the dye-based polarizing elements used in the present invention described above is preferable, taking into consideration the ease of hue adjustment. Furthermore, when considering heat resistance during lens processing, the use of the dye-based polarizing elements used in the present invention described above is also preferable, as iodine-based polarizing elements deteriorate due to the heat generated during processing.
- the polarized lens of the present invention comprises a lens substrate and the above-described optical laminate, and is suitable for use in eyewear.
- the polarized lens of the present invention can be obtained by molding the optical laminate into a desired shape so that the first support is on the outside (the side opposite the lens substrate).
- eyewear such as sunglasses or goggles can be obtained by fixing the polarized lens of the present invention to a frame.
- An example of the process for forming a polarized lens is shown below, but the process is not limited to this.
- Polarized lenses can typically be obtained by sequentially performing the following steps: forming a sheet (or film) of optical laminate containing polarizing elements; shaping (bending) the optical laminate; insert-molding the shaped optical laminate with a resin; and applying a hard coat to the resulting insert-molded product.
- the optical laminate is shaped (bent) using a heat press or the like to facilitate processing into a lens shape in combination with the lens substrate, described below.
- a mold designed to a predetermined size is used for shaping, and the shape of the mold is appropriately designed to match the design of the eyewear product.
- Figure 3 shows an overview of the shaping (bending) process of the optical laminate according to the present invention.
- the optical laminate 100 is placed in a bending mold 50 (concave mold), and the optical laminate 100 is pressed with a hemispherical mold 51 (convex mold, also known as a hot iron ball) heated to a predetermined temperature, thereby obtaining a curved optical laminate 101.
- the second support 12 which is the support on the viewing side of the optical laminate 100, is injection molded using the spherical mold 51, and the optical laminate 101 is bent down to the first support 11.
- the bending conditions take into consideration the bendability and heat resistance (such as discoloration of the polarizing element) of the optical laminate, and are typically a temperature of 70 to 120°C, preferably 80 to 100°C, for a time period of 1 to 3 minutes. At this time, it is also possible to simultaneously or sequentially trim only a portion of the sheet-like optical laminate to be used in the subsequent insert molding process.
- the lens substrate is a resin material used for integrating with the optical laminate of the present invention and processing it into a lens shape.
- a resin also referred to as a lens substrate
- the injected resin be the same material as the layer with which the injected resin is in contact. For such integrated processing, insert molding is generally used.
- thermoplastic resins that can be molded by injection molding, and thermosetting resins that can be molded by mold polymerization or the like and are commonly used for eyewear lenses.
- examples of such resins include (meth)acrylic resins such as methyl methacrylate homopolymers and copolymers of methyl methacrylate with one or more other monomers, diethylene glycol bisallyl carbonate resins such as diethylene glycol bisallyl carbonate homopolymers and copolymers of diethylene glycol bisallyl carbonate with one or more other monomers, acrylonitrile-styrene copolymers, halogen-containing copolymers, polysulfide resins such as homopolymers of monomers having sulfide bonds and copolymers of monomers having sulfide bonds with one or more other monomers, polyurea resins, PA resins, PC resins, polystyrene resins, polyolefin resins,
- the material of the lens substrate is the same as that of the layer that comes into contact with the lens substrate.
- the support and lens substrate can be fused together.
- the eyewear of the present invention comprises the above-described polarized lens, which may have a hard coating, anti-reflection film, or the like formed on its surface as appropriate, and the eyewear of the present invention can be produced by fixing the polarized lens to a frame by edging, drilling, screwing, or the like.
- any layer of the optical laminate or lens substrate may contain an ultraviolet absorber to provide ultraviolet absorption, or may contain a dye or metal oxide, etc. to provide infrared absorption.
- the present invention relates to the following [1] to [5].
- An optical laminate comprising a first support, a second support, and a polarizing element disposed between the first support and the second support, the polarizing element contains one or more dye-based dichroic dyes having a dichroic ratio (Rd) of 38 or more at a maximum absorption wavelength ( ⁇ max);

- an isocyanate curing agent 590E manufactured by Soken Chemical & Engineering Co., Ltd.
- DBSn dibutyltin dilaurate
- cyclohexanone cyclohexanone
- the prepared adhesive composition was applied by a die coater method to one side of a PA resin film (manufactured by EMS, TRF-800, film thickness 80 ⁇ m) as a second support, and the coated film was dried at 100 ° C. for 3 minutes to remove the solvent, thereby obtaining an adhesive layer (film thickness 24 ⁇ m).
- the polarizing element surface of the polarizing plate prepared in (2) above was then bonded to the air side of the adhesive layer to produce an optical laminate of the present invention.
- Example 2 An optical laminate was produced in the same manner as in Example 1, except that in (2) of Example 1, a grayish polarizing element was produced using a dyeing solution prepared by dissolving 1.0 part by mass of each of Dyes 1, 4, 5, and 6 in water.
- Example 3 An optical laminate was produced in the same manner as in Example 1, except that in (2) of Example 1, a dyeing solution prepared by dissolving 1.0 part by mass of each of dyes 4, 5, 6, and 7 in water was used to produce a grayish polarizing element.
- Example 1 An optical laminate was obtained in the same manner as in Example 1, except that in (2) of Example 1, a dyeing solution prepared by dissolving 1.0 part by mass of each of Dyes 6, 7, and 8 in water was used to prepare a grayish polarizing element.
- Examples 1 to 3 optical laminates were produced in which Py was in the range of 78% to 85%, Ys was in the range of 43% to 55%, and Ykz was in the range of 8% to 12%. Thus, in Examples 1 to 3, Py, Ys, and Ykz were all within the desired ranges. Therefore, even when used in polarized sunglasses, such optical laminates are expected to ensure the display visibility of HUD devices while maintaining the anti-glare properties and scenery visibility of polarized sunglasses.
- Comparative Example 1 Ys was the same as in Example 3, but Py was lower than 78% and Ykz was higher than 12%. In this case, Ykz was maintained at 8% or higher, preventing the HUD display from blacking out, but the low Py raised concerns about anti-glare properties.
- Comparative Example 3 an optical laminate was produced in which Ys was within the range of 43% to 55%, but Py was significantly below 78%, and YKz was greater than 12%. In this case, the desired Ys was ensured, YKz was high, and there was little likelihood of blackouts occurring in the HUD device display, but Py was low, so the desired anti-glare properties could not be maintained.

- the optical laminate 100 prepared above was positioned so that its absorption axis was horizontal.
- a commercially available color IPS liquid crystal display (Hermans, SZ-LCDMN-7) was used as the display 60, and blue plate glass (1.5 mm thick) was used as the projection unit 61 instead of the windshield.
- the display image from the display 60 was projected onto the projection unit 61, and the observer (optical laminate) 100 was positioned so that the display image could be observed as a virtual image.
- the display 60 was installed so that the polarization direction of the emitted display light was horizontal. - each optical laminate 100 was placed as eyewear, covering both eyes of the observer.
- the optical laminate 100 was placed so that its absorption axis was horizontal.
- the test was conducted by having the observer observe a landscape including reflected sunlight from an automobile windshield, a building window, or the like, outdoors on a sunny day. Evaluation was conducted by having 10 panelists confirm the effect of reducing glare caused by reflected light via the optical laminate 100, according to the following criteria. The results are shown in Table 2.
- Comparative Example 2 10 out of 10 people answered “No” to criterion (3) in Test A. This was due to Ykz being 2.6%, which resulted in the HUD device display image being completely blacked out and completely invisible. Furthermore, in Test B, 10 out of 10 people answered "No” to criterion (4). These results confirm that Comparative Example 2 has an effect of reducing the glare of external light, as Py is 80.3%, which is at the same level as Examples 1 to 3.
- the optical laminate of the present invention provides anti-glare properties that block external light through its polarization function when driving a vehicle equipped with a HUD device, while allowing the image displayed on the HUD device to be viewed without obstruction.
- the optical laminate of the present invention which possesses such performance, is an optical laminate with new properties that are not classified under existing international standards for sunglasses, and can contribute to improved comfort and safety in the driving environment of a vehicle.

Description

Rd=Az/Ax (I)

Py={(Yp-Yc)/(Yp+Yc)}1/2×100 (II)
