Definitions
- the present invention relates to an ozone generator, a method for manufacturing an ozone generator, a method for generating ozone, and an ozone storage container.
- Ozone generators are known that generate ozone by applying an AC voltage between electrodes in a discharge space and causing discharge while a raw material gas containing oxygen is supplied.
- Various studies have been conducted to date to improve the efficiency of ozone generation, including technology that provides a metal compound layer on at least one side of the discharge surface (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
- Patent Document 1 discloses an ozone generator having first and second electrodes facing each other and a dielectric formed on the first electrode, with a discharge space between the dielectric and the second electrode, further comprising a metal compound layer provided on a surface of at least one of the second electrode and the dielectric, the metal compound layer satisfying the following conditions (1) to (4): (1) It is not a substance that promotes ozone decomposition. (2) It is not a conductor. (3) The band gap of the metal compound layer is in the range of 2.0 to 4.0 eV. (4) The hole potential of the valence band formed in the excited state of the metal compound layer is greater than the bond potential of oxygen molecules.
- oxygen gas in the source gas passing through the discharge space can be selectively and catalytically dissociated to generate a high concentration of oxygen atoms, thereby increasing the ozone generation efficiency within the ozone generator to 0.01 mg/J or more and generating high concentrations of ozone.
- Patent Document 1 As shown in Patent Document 1, the focus has been on optimizing metal oxides as metal compound layers, and within the category of metal oxides, a search has been made for substances that have a slow ozone decomposition rate and a fast decomposition rate of oxygen molecules into oxygen atoms upon photoexcitation (i.e., substances that lead to an improvement in the rate at which ozone molecules are generated).
- Patent Document 1 specifies search conditions that the band gap, the hole potential of the valence band, and the metal oxide on the electrode surface do not contain manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and silver (Ag).
- metal compounds V2O5 , CrO3, NbO5, MoO3, Ta2O5, WO3 ) having semiconductor properties and containing metal elements V (vanadium), Cr ( chromium ), Nb (niobium), Mo ( molybdenum ), Ta ( tantalum), and W ( tungsten ) of Groups 5 and 6 of the periodic table, or a metal compound ( Bi2O3 ) of bismuth element other than Groups 5 and 6 of the periodic table.
- Non-Patent Document 1 it is at least known that generated ozone molecules are destroyed when they collide with wall surfaces. For this reason, it is desirable for ozone generators to be made from substances that have a low probability of ozone decomposition upon collision, and this is essential in particular for electrode materials. The probability that ozone molecules will decompose upon collision depends strongly on the type of substance, but materials used to date (mostly metal oxides) have had limited effectiveness in suppressing the decomposition of ozone molecules.
- the objective of the present invention is to provide an ozone generator that suppresses the decomposition and dissociation of generated ozone molecules, a method for manufacturing an ozone generator, a method for generating ozone, and an ozone storage container.

There is no particular upper limit to the band gap of the first functional layer 112 and the second functional layer 122, but it may be 15 eV or less. - the thickness of the first functional layer 112 and the second functional layer 122 must be at least atomic layer level (0.2 nm). On the other hand, there is no upper limit to the thickness of the first functional layer 112 or the second functional layer 122, as long as a dielectric barrier discharge occurs. However, it is advantageous to make the dielectric portion of the electrode thinner, as this increases the power density that can be supplied to the electrode when an alternating current is applied to the electrode. Because the functional layers 112 and 122 are also dielectrics, it is desirable to make them as thin as possible.
- the first functional layer 112 and the second functional layer 122 contain fluorine, have high chemical resistance, and are relatively resistant to degradation by dielectric barrier discharge. Therefore, they can be made relatively thin, enabling the device to be made smaller and more powerful.
- the thickness of the first functional layer 112 and the second functional layer 122 is preferably 10 nm or more and 1 mm or less. This allows a stable dielectric barrier discharge to occur between the first functional layer 112 and the second functional layer 122, and also enhances ozone generation capacity. From the perspective of further stability of the dielectric barrier discharge (electrode life), it is even more preferable that the thickness of the first functional layer 112 and the second functional layer 122 be 100 nm or more and 1 mm or less.

- the thickness of the first conductive layer 111 and the second conductive layer 121 may be between 10 ⁇ m and 100 ⁇ m. If the thickness of the conductive layers 111 and 121 is within this range, there is no need to worry about disconnections due to heat generation, etc., and conductive layers with a uniform film thickness can be formed.

- An ozone generator 200 is identical to the ozone generator 100 ( Figure 1), except that it includes a first buffer layer 210 between the first conductive layer 111 and the first functional layer 112, and a second buffer layer 220 between the second conductive layer 121 and the second functional layer 122. A description of the same elements as those in the ozone generator 100 of Figure 1 will be omitted.
- the first buffer layer 210 improves the adhesion and stability between the first conductive layer 111 and the first functional layer 112.

- the thickness limit for the buffer layers 210, 220 depends mainly on the strength of the buffer layers, and may be, for example, 1 ⁇ m or more and 500 ⁇ m or less. If the thickness of the buffer layers 210, 220 is within this range, excellent adhesion and stability are achieved.
- the thickness of the first buffer layer 210 and the second buffer layer 220 may preferably be 50 ⁇ m or more and 100 ⁇ m or less. This makes it possible to provide an ozone generator that increases the supply power density while maintaining adhesion and stability.

- the temperatures of the first electrode 110 and the second electrode 120 are preferably set to room temperature (20°C) or below. The lower limits of the temperatures of the first electrode 110 and the second electrode 120 are set by taking care to prevent the raw oxygen gas from liquefying and the impurities in the raw gas from solidifying and accumulating. - the inner surface of the ozone generator refers to the surface that comes into contact with the ozone gas generated in the ozone generator, and as mentioned above, this refers to all surfaces that come into contact with the generated ozone gas before reaching the output port, as well as the surfaces of the electrodes.
- the present invention also includes a configuration in which, for example, in an ozone generator having a first electrode and a second electrode formed from a material other than a fluorine-containing material, part of the inner surface, excluding the electrode surfaces, is formed from the fluorine-containing material.
- Example 1 In Example 1, the stability of ozone molecules in contact with the surface of manganese oxide (MnO 2 ) was calculated by computer simulation.
- the computational simulations used first-principles quantum molecular dynamics (specifically, the Car-Parrinello method) that utilizes the local density approximation.
- the Car-Parrinello method simulates atomic motion by simultaneously solving the equations of motion for the atoms (ionic cores or atomic nuclei) in the system based on Newtonian mechanics and the virtual equations of motion for the electron wave functions.
- the local density approximation used BLYP (Becke's exchange energy formula and Lee, Yang, Parr's correlation energy formula).
- FIG. 6 shows the simulation model used in the calculation of MnO2 in Example 1.
- the simulation is a so-called NVT (canonical ensemble) simulation, in which the number of molecular and atomic particles (N) in the calculation cell, the cell volume (V), and the temperature (T) are constant conditions. Therefore, the ozone gas pressure is roughly calculated based on the number of molecules present in the space. A large number of molecules and a high temperature are advantageous in ensuring sufficient reaction opportunities (opportunities for contact between the functional layer surface and ozone molecules) within the limited simulation time. However, it is important to carefully set simulation conditions to avoid observing phenomena that do not actually occur.
- the molecular volume density here, at 400 K is roughly equivalent to approximately 170 atmospheres of atmospheric pressure, which is approximately 30 to 200 times the gas pressure of an actual ozone generator. The time until the first ozone molecule begins to decompose and the decomposition rate of the ozone molecule were calculated. The results are shown in Table 2 and Figure 8.
