Definitions
- Washrooms in commercial and residential buildings typically include products such as toilet tissue, paper towels, diapers, feminine products, liquid products such as soap, and aerosol products such as air fresheners. These products are typically housed by a dispenser and are dispensed as needed by the user. Those skilled in the art have spent considerable time designing dispensers that can more easily dispense the products noted above. Dispensers are configured to hold rolls of sheet material and to dispense sheet material from the rolls typically with one or more drive rollers, motors, and sensors. Dispensers can include roll retaining devices that are capable of holding different varieties of sheet products. As such, users may attempt to purchase rolled sheet materials from other sources that are different from the dispenser manufacturer.
- dispenser manufacture does not recoup downstream profits from the sale of rolls of sheet material if the consumer decides to utilize rolls provided by other manufacturers. Further, usage of improper rolled sheet products (e.g., sheet products that are not from the dispenser manufacturer) can impair the function of the dispenser, such that the dispenser may not be able to effectively dispense the rolled sheet product, which leads to user frustration.
- improper rolled sheet products e.g., sheet products that are not from the dispenser manufacturer

- Hinges refers to a jointed or flexible device that connects and permits pivoting or turning of a part to a stationary component.
- Hinges include, but are not limited to, metal pivotable connectors, such as those used to fasten a door to frame, and living hinges.
- Living hinges may be constructed from plastic and formed integrally between two members. A living hinge permits pivotable movement of one member in relation to another connected member.
- sheet material and “paper” means a material that is thin in comparison to its length and breadth. Generally speaking, sheet materials should exhibit a relatively flat planar configuration and be flexible to permit folding, rolling, stacking, and the like. Exemplary sheet materials and papers include, but are not limited to, paper tissue, bath/toilet tissue, paper towels, wipes, label rolls, or other fibrous, film, polymer, or filamentary products. The terms “sheet material” and “paper” may be used interchangeably.
- unauthorized roll of sheet material or "unauthorized core” refer to a core of a roll of sheet material that does not include the proper core plug (e.g., an authorized core plug) or includes no core plug.
- authorized roll of sheet material or “authorized core” refers to a core of a roll of sheet material that does include the proper core plug as disclosed herein.
- the present disclosure is directed to a roll retaining device for dispensing sheet material from one or more rolls of sheet material.
- the roll retaining device includes a core plug configured to be placed in a core of a roll of sheet material and an arm having a first end and a second end.
- a core plug mating device is coupled to the first end of the arm.
- the core plug mating device includes an annular surface and protrusion extending from the annular surface.
- the protrusion defines a cavity including an annular rib disposed therein.
- the protrusion includes an end surface disposed away from the annular surface and an outer wall between the end surface and the annular surface.
- a first portion of the outer wall has a first slope that is less than a second slope of a second portion of the outer wall.
- the disclosure provides a dispenser for dispensing sheet material from one or more rolls of sheet material.
- the dispenser includes a housing having an interior volume so as to retain a first roll of sheet material and a roll retaining device.
- the roll retaining device includes a core plug configured to be placed in a core of a roll of sheet material and an arm having a first end and a second end.

- the roll retaining devices and dispensers can provide numerous benefits and technical effects. For instance, when the core plug mating device is matched with an unauthorized roll of sheet material, the unauthorized roll will fall from the core plug mating device and cannot be dispensed. Accordingly, the roll retaining device allows for use of only approved rolls of sheet material (e.g., authorized rolls of sheet material). Thus, inappropriate competitor products cannot be dispensed via the roll retaining device and sheet material dispenser provided herein.
- the roll retaining device provides a self-authenticating function capably of authenticating that the proper commercial roll of sheet material is dispensed from the dispensing device. Such self-authentication, ensures that downstream commercial products (e.g., rolls of sheet material) sold by manufacturers can only be used in dispensing devices provided from the same manufacturer.
- embodiments of the present disclosure include features that improve the overall functionality and performance of the dispenser.
- modification of the end plug mating device to include a sloped outer wall having a first portion having a slope that is less than a second portion of the outer wall provides a release mechanism for an unauthorized roll of sheet material. For instance, when an unauthorized roll is placed on the roll retaining device, gravitational pressure exerts a downward force on the unauthorized core that may cause it to appear to be successfully held in place on the protrusion of the end plug mating device. However, upon rotation of the unauthorized core about the core plug mating device, the first portion of the core plug mating device having a lesser slope will rotate to the pressure point between the unauthorized core and the end plug mating device.
- the core plug mating device includes an annular rib disposed in a cavity configured to engage with an annular wall on an authorized core plug to secure the authorized roll of sheet material to the roll support. As such, engagement between the annular rib and the annular wall provide support to the core of an authorized roll to facilitate dispensing of sheet material from the authorized roll.

- the end surface 16 can also be referred to as the stopping point for the protrusion 14.
- the protrusion 14 can include an outer wall 17 and an inner wall 18.
- a cavity 19 is disposed in the protrusion 14 and an annular rib 20 is disposed within the cavity 19.
- the outer wall 17 can have different slopes with respect to axis A, which generally runs the centerline of the core plug mating device 10.
- a first portion 21 of the outer wall 17 can have a slope with respect to axis A that is generally less than the slope of the second portion 22.
- the fist portion 21 of the outer wall is sloped less from the end surface 16 to the annular surface 12 as compared to the second portion 22.
- the slope of the second portion 22 is greater than the slope of the first portion 21 .
- the lesser sloped first portion 21 comes into contact with an unauthorized roll of sheet material, the lesser sloped first portion 21 does not provide enough leverage to hold the unauthorized roll in place, and the unauthorized roll of sheet material will fall from the roll retaining device.
- additional annular ribs can be placed around the end surface 16 of the protrusion 14 or around the outer wall 17 of the protrusion 14 to further enhance the frictional fit between the core plug mating device 10 and the core plug.
- the protrusion 14 can be conical or semi-conical in shape having a first end 24 generally abutting the annular surface 12 and a second end 25 that can define a portion of or substantially all of the end surface 16.

- the first portion 21 comprises at least 10%, such as at least 20%, such as at least 30%, such as at least 40%, such as at least 50%, such as at least 60%, such as at least 70%, such as at least 80% of the total surface area of the protrusion 14.
- the second portion 22 comprises at least about 5% such, as at least about 10%, such as at least about 20%, such as at least about 25%, such as at least about 30%, such as at least about 40%, such as at least about 45%, such as at least about 50% of the total surface area of the protrusion 14.
- the first portion 21 defines at least about 65% of the total surface area of the protrusion 14 with the second portion 22 defining at least about 35% of the total surface area of the protrusion 14.
- the protrusion 14 further includes a cavity 19 in which an annular rib 20 is disposed.
- the cavity 19 includes a diameter (D1) that is smaller than the overall diameter (D2) of the core plug mating device 10.
- the ratio of D2 to D1 can range from between about 10:1 to about 4:1 , such as from about 8:1 to about 5:1 , such as from about 7:1 to about 6:1 . In embodiments, the ratio of D2 to D1 is from about 5:1 to about 6:1 .
- the annular rib 20 can be disposed in the cavity 19 such that a first end 27 of the annular rib 20 does not extend beyond the end surface 16 of the protrusion 14. However, in other embodiments, the first end 27 of the annular rib 20 may extend beyond the end surface 16 of the protrusion 14 in order to facilitate mating between the core plug mating device 10 and an authorized core plug, as will be discussed further hereinbelow.

- engagement between the annular wall 46 and the annular rib 20 allow for secure and supported rotation of the core plug 40 and the core plug mating device 10.
- proper engagement between the annular wall 46 and the annular rib 20 ensures that the roll of sheet material is supported during dispensing cycles, and that the core plug 40 does not disengage from the core plug mating device 10 during dispensing.
- Engagement between the core plug 40 and the core plug mating device 10 is further facilitated by engagement between the feet 41 and the ribs 30.
- a surface of each foot 41 is disposed adjacent to or on a portion of the annular surface 12 between two ribs 30. Rotation of the core plug 10 is thus limited due to the placement of the ribs 30. For instance, in the event that the core plug 40 begins to rotate faster or slower than the core plug mating device 10, the ribs 30 engage with the sides of the feet 41 to prevent the core plug 40 from rotating off of the core plug mating device 10. In such a manner, interaction between the feet 41 and the ribs 30 ensures proper placement of the core plug 40 on the core plug mating device 10.
- a roll retaining device 122 having the core plug mating device 10 and an arm 50 is shown.
