空間演出装置及び空間演出方法
 本発明は、空間演出装置及び空間演出方法に関する。
 通常、鏡に映る光の像は、文字通り鏡の面で鏡面反射して構成される像である。そのため、人の眼には、鏡に反射する現実空間を見たときと、現実空間を直接見たときの像は、鏡写しの同じ像として認知される。また、鏡は日常生活で広く使われているため、鏡にどのような像が映るかは、日常生活で鏡を見慣れた人には容易に予想できることが多い。
 非特許文献1は、鏡の中に、現実空間にはない像を表示する手法を開示している。非特許文献1に開示されている手法は、ハーフミラーとLED(light-emitting diode)ディスプレイを組み合わせて使用するものであり、ハーフミラーの奥にLEDディスプレイを物理的に設置する。LEDが発光しない部分は、ハーフミラーが現実空間の光を反射して像をつくり、LEDが発光する部分は、LED光がハーフミラーを通過することで、ハーフミラー上に像をつくる。そのため、ハーフミラーの前に立つ人から見ると、現実空間に存在しない像がハーフミラー上に表示される。
 しかしながら、非特許文献1に開示される手法は、比較的重量のあるLEDディスプレイを鏡の奥の空間に設置する必要があるため、空間的な制約によりLEDディスプレイを置くことができないケースでは実現が難しい。

 情報処理装置15は、光源11と通信可能に接続され、光源11を制御する。情報処理装置と光源11との間の接続は、有線接続であってもよく、無線接続であってもよい。例えば、情報処理装置15は、視覚情報としての像を投影するよう光源11を制御する。具体的には、情報処理装置15は、投影すべき像の画像データを光源11に送信する。視覚情報は、人の視覚を通じて人に認識される情報を指す。像は、静止画像であってもよく、動画像(映像)であってもよい。情報処理装置15は、パーソナルコンピュータ(PC)などのコンピュータであり得る。
 光源11は、像を投影するための光を発する。光源11は視野角制限面13に対して投光可能な位置に配置され、像は視野角制限面13に投影される。例えば、光源11は、情報処理装置15から画像データを受信し、受信した画像データに応じた光線を視野角制限面13に向けて発する。光源11としては、例えば、プロジェクタなどの投光器を使用することができる。プロジェクタは、スクリーンなどの面に像を投影する光学装置である。以下では、光源11から発せられる光を視覚情報光と呼ぶこともある。
 なお、情報処理装置15は空間演出装置10から削除されてもよい。例えば、情報処理装置15の機能は、マイクロコンピュータなど、光源11に組み込まれたコンピュータにより実現されてよい。この場合、画像データは、USBメモリなどの記録媒体に格納された状態で光源11に提供されてよい。
 ミラー12は、光を鏡面反射する。ミラー12は、例えば、平面の反射面を持つ一般的な平面鏡であり得る。ミラー12は、観察者18が位置することが予定される観察者領域19に対向して立て置かれている。
 視野角制限面13は、入射する光を所定の角度範囲に向けて選択的に拡散反射する。視野角制限面13は、例えば、視野角制限フィルムが張られた投光面であり得る。視野角制限フィルムとは、特定の角度範囲に光を透過する性質を持つ光学フィルムを指す。具体的には、視野角制限フィルムは、特定の角度範囲内の方向に進む光を透過し、特定の角度範囲外の方向に進む光を遮る光学フィルムである。視野角制限フィルムは、窓ガラスに張ることでプライバシー保護などの目的で利用されている。投光面とは、光を拡散反射する物理面(例えば物理平面)であって、プロジェクタ光を映し出せる物理面を指す。投光面としては、例えば、白色の壁又は床やスクリーンを使用することができる。本実施形態では、視野角制限面13は、スクリーンと、スクリーンに張り付けられる視野角制限フィルムと、を含む。投光面が白色の壁又は床である例では、視野角制限面13は、白色の壁又は床に張り付けられる視野角制限フィルムを含む。
 視野角制限面13は、光を反射する角度範囲内の方向にミラー12が位置し、光を反射する角度範囲外の方向に観察者領域19が位置するように、観察者領域19とミラー12との間に配置される。視野角制限面13の視野角制限フィルムは、視野角制限面13のスクリーンにより拡散反射された視覚情報光の観察者領域19の方向への透過を制限する。よって、視覚情報光は、観察者18の方向に拡散しない。
 ミラー12及び視野角制限面13は、観察者領域19に位置する観察者18がミラー12越しに視野角制限面13を見ることが可能であるように、配置されてよい。図1に示す例では、光源11は天井に配置され、視野角制限面13は床に配置されている。他の例では、光源11は三脚により支持され、視野角制限面13は壁に配置されていてもよい。
 光源11が視野角制限面13に向けて視覚情報光を照射すると、ミラー12の方向に対しては光の反射が生じて、観察者18からはミラー12の奥に虚像が見える。一方で、図2に示すように、視野角制限面13により観察者18の方向に視覚情報光は拡散しないため、視野角制限面13に映っている実像については観察者18から見ることはできない。例えば、光源11が図3に示す人型の像30を視野角制限面13に投影する場合、図4に示すように、観察者18は、視野角制限面13上の実像を視認することができないが、ミラー12上にその虚像40を視認することができる。すなわち、空間演出装置10は、観察者領域19から見たときに、視野角制限面13に像が映らず、ミラー12に像が映る状態を作り出すことが可能である。
 以上のように、空間演出装置10では、光源11は、情報処理装置15から受信する画像データに対応する視覚情報光を視野角制限面13に向けて発する。光源11からの視覚情報光は視野角制限面13に直接に入射する。視野角制限面13は、光源11からの視覚情報光を所定の角度範囲に向けて選択的に反射する。視野角制限面13は、観察者領域19が前記所定の角度範囲外の方向に位置するように、配置される。それにより、視野角制限面13により反射される視覚情報光が観察者領域19に直接に向かうことが防止される。ミラー12は、前記所定の角度範囲内の方向に位置し、視野角制限面13により反射される視覚情報光を鏡面反射する。光源11からの視覚情報光は視野角制限面13により反射され、視野角制限面13により反射された視覚情報光はミラー12により反射されて観察者18に到達する。よって、空間演出装置10は、観察者18が現実空間(具体的には視野角制限面13)において像を視認できないが、鏡(具体的にはミラー12)に映る像を視認できる状態を生成することができる。すなわち、空間演出装置10は、現実空間と鏡像空間(鏡に映る現実空間)で異なる像を観察者18に対し提示することができる。その結果、観察者18に予想外となる驚きを与えることができる。
 上述した例では、光源11からの視覚情報光は視野角制限面13に直接入射する。代替として、光源11、ミラー12、及び視野角制限面13は、図5に示すように、視覚情報光がミラー12を介して視野角制限面13に入射するように、配置されてもよい。図5に示す配置では、光源11は視覚情報光をミラー12に向けて照射し、視覚情報光はミラー12により反射されて視野角制限面13に到達する。それにより、視野角制限面13のスクリーンに実像がつくられる。この場合にも、図6に示すように、視野角制限面13により観察者18の方向に光は拡散しないため、視野角制限面13上の実像については観察者から見ることはできない。よって、図5に示す構成においても同様に、現実空間と鏡像空間で異なる視覚情報を観察者18に対し提示することができる。
 図7は、第2の実施形態に係る空間演出装置70を概略的に示している。図7に示すように、空間演出装置70は、偏光光源71、偏光ミラー72、視野角制限面73、表示装置74、及び情報処理装置75を備える。視野角制限面73は、第1の実施形態に係る視野角制限面13と同じものであるので、視野角制限面73についての説明は適宜省略する。
 情報処理装置75は、偏光光源71及び表示装置74と通信可能に接続され、偏光光源71及び表示装置74を制御する。情報処理装置75と偏光光源71との間の接続は、有線接続であってもよく、無線接続であってもよい。情報処理装置75と表示装置74との間の接続は、有線接続であってもよく、無線接続であってもよい。例えば、情報処理装置75は、像を視野角制限面73に投影するよう偏光光源71を制御する。具体的には、情報処理装置75は、視野角制限面73に投影すべき像の画像データを偏光光源71に送信する。さらに、情報処理装置75は、画像を表示するよう表示装置74を制御する。具体的には、情報処理装置75は、表示装置74に表示すべき画像のデータを表示装置74に送信する。情報処理装置75は、PCなどのコンピュータであり得る。
 偏光光源71は、直線偏光した光を発する光源である。偏光光源71は、例えば、無偏光な光源と直線偏光子の組み合わせで実現することができる。無偏光光源は、無偏光の光を発する光源である。無偏光光源としては、プロジェクタなどの投光器を使用することができる。無偏光光源は、例えば、第1の実施形態に係る光源11(図1)と同じ光源であり得る。直線偏光子は、特定の偏光の光を通過させるが、他の偏光の光を遮断する光学フィルタである。直線偏光子としては、例えば、直線偏光フィルムを使用することができる。無偏光光源からの光を直線偏光子に通すことにより、直線偏光した光を得る。偏光光源71は、情報処理装置75から画像データを受信し、受信した画像データに応じた、直線偏光した光線を視野角制限面73に向けて発する。
 偏光ミラー72は、縦横の一方に直線偏光した光を選択的に透過し、縦横の他方に直線偏光した光を反射する。偏光ミラー72に該当する光学特性を持つミラーとしては、ワイヤーグリッド偏光子などの反射型偏光子が知られている。偏光ミラー72として、反射型偏光子からなるビームスプリッタ板を使用することができる。我々の生活空間に存在する光の殆どは、無偏光であり、縦横の両偏光成分を持った光で構成されている。偏光ミラーは、無偏光に含まれる縦横の両成分のうち片方を透過し、もう一方を反射する。このため、生活空間に置かれた偏光ミラーは、ハーフミラーとも考えられ、鏡のように周辺の環境を映し出すことができる。
 偏光ミラー72は、観察者78が位置することが予定される観察者領域79に対向して立て置かれている。以降では、説明を簡潔にするために、空間を偏光ミラー72で2つに分割したときに、観察者78がいる側の空間を現実空間、観察者78から見て偏光ミラー72の奥の空間を鏡内空間と呼ぶ。
 偏光光源71は、偏光ミラー72が反射する偏光方向に直線偏光した視覚情報光を偏光ミラー72に向けて照射する。よって、偏光ミラー72は、偏光光源71からの直線偏光した視覚情報光を反射する。偏光光源71からの視覚情報光は、偏光ミラー72を介して視野角制限面73に入射する。
 視野角制限面73は、スクリーンと、スクリーンに張り付けられた視野角制限フィルムと、を含む。視野角制限面73は、光を反射する角度範囲内の方向に偏光ミラー72が位置し、光を反射する角度範囲外の方向に観察者領域79が位置するように、観察者領域79と偏光ミラー72との間に配置される。野角制限フィルムは、スクリーンにより拡散反射された視覚情報光の観察者領域79の方向への透過を制限する。よって、視覚情報光は、観察者78の方向に拡散しない。
 偏光ミラー72及び視野角制限面73は、観察者領域79に位置する観察者78が偏光ミラー72越しに視野角制限面73を見ることが可能であるように、配置されてよい。
 偏光光源71が視覚情報光を発すると、第1の実施形態において説明したものと同様にして、観察者78からは偏光ミラー72の奥に虚像が見えるが、視野角制限面73に映っている実像については見ることはできない。
 表示装置74は、画像を表示する。表示装置74は、例えば、LEDディスプレイであり得る。表示装置74は鏡内空間に配置される。具体的には、表示装置74は、偏光ミラー72を介して観察者78に対向するように、配置される。表示装置74の表示面は偏光ミラー72と平行であり得る。偏光ミラー72はハーフミラーとしての特性を持つため、表示装置74に表示される画像の光は、偏光ミラー72を透過して観察者領域79に到達する。よって、観察者78には、像が現実空間に存在しないが鏡(偏光ミラー72)に映っているように見える。
 典型的には、表示装置74を用いて提示する像は、偏光光源71を用いて提示する像とは異なる。例えば、図8に示すように表示装置74に人型のアバター80を表示し、図9に示すように偏光光源71を用いてアバター80の影90を投影するようにする。この場合、観察者領域79から見ると、アバター80に対応する像102及び影90に対応する像101が偏光ミラー72に映る。すなわち、鏡(偏光ミラー72)の中にアバターとその影を作り出すことができる。偏光光源71を使用することで、偏光ミラー72の、表示装置74に対向する部分721以外の部分722においても像を作り出すことができる。
 以上のように、空間演出装置70では、偏光光源71は、情報処理装置75から受信する画像データに対応する視覚情報光を偏光ミラー72に向けて発する。偏光ミラー72が縦に直線偏光した光を選択的に反射するように構成される例では、偏光光源71は、縦に直線偏光した視覚情報光が偏光ミラー72に入射するように設けられる。それにより、偏光光源71からの視覚情報光は、偏光ミラー72により反射されて視野角制限面73に向かう。視野角制限面73は、光を所定の角度範囲に向けて選択的に反射する。視野角制限面73は、観察者領域79が前記所定の角度範囲外の方向に位置するように、配置される。それにより、視野角制限面73により反射される視覚情報光が観察者領域79に直接に向かうことが防止される。偏光ミラー72は、前記所定の角度範囲内の方向に位置し、視野角制限面73により反射される視覚情報光を観察者領域79に向けて反射する。さらに、表示装置74に表示された画像の光の一部が偏光ミラー72を透過して観察者領域79に到達する。よって、空間演出装置70は、観察者78が現実空間において像を視認できないが、鏡(具体的には偏光ミラー72)に映る像を視認できる状態を生成することができる。すなわち、空間演出装置70は、現実空間と鏡像空間で異なる像を観察者78に対し提示することができる。
 なお、本発明は、上記実施形態に限定されるものではなく、実施段階ではその要旨を逸脱しない範囲で種々に変形することが可能である。また、各実施形態は適宜組み合わせて実施してもよく、その場合組み合わせた効果が得られる。さらに、上記実施形態には種々の発明が含まれており、開示される複数の構成要素から選択された組み合わせにより種々の発明が抽出され得る。例えば、実施形態に示される全構成要素からいくつかの構成要素が削除されても、課題が解決でき、効果が得られる場合には、この構成要素が削除された構成が発明として抽出され得る。

Claims (6)

  1.  第1の像を投影するための光を発する光源と、
     前記光源から発せられる前記光を所定の角度範囲に向けて選択的に反射する視野角制限面であって、観察者が位置することが予定される観察者領域が前記所定の角度範囲外の方向に位置するように配置され、前記第1の像が投影される視野角制限面と、
     前記光源から発せられて前記視野角制限面により反射される前記光を反射するミラーと、
     を備える空間演出装置。
  2.  前記光源から発せられる前記光は前記視野角制限面に直接に入射する、
     請求項1に記載の空間演出装置。
  3.  前記光源から発せられる前記光は前記ミラーを介して前記視野角制限面に入射する、
     請求項1に記載の空間演出装置。
  4.  前記ミラーを介して前記観察者領域に対向して配置され、第2の像を表示する表示装置をさらに備え、
     前記光源は、第1の方向に偏光した前記光を発し、
     前記ミラーは、前記第1の方向に偏光した前記光を反射し、前記第1の方向と直交する第2の方向に偏光した光を透過する偏光ミラーである、
     請求項1に記載の空間演出装置。
  5.  前記視野角制限面は、光を拡散反射する物理面に取り付けられ、前記物理面により拡散反射されて前記所定の角度範囲内の方向に進む光を透過し、前記物理面により拡散反射されて前記所定の角度範囲外の方向に進む光を遮る光学フィルムを含む、
     請求項1に記載の空間演出装置。
  6.  第1の像を投影するための光を発する光源を制御することと、
     前記光源から発せられる前記光を所定の角度範囲に向けて選択的に反射する視野角制限面であって、観察者が位置することが予定される観察者領域が前記所定の角度範囲外の方向に位置するように配置され、前記第1の像が投影される視野角制限面を設けることと、
     前記光源から発せられて前記視野角制限面により反射される前記光を反射するミラーを設けることと、
     を備える空間演出方法。
