図1に、本開示の側方励起光ファイバの構成例を示す。本実施形態では、本開示の基本的な構造について説明する。本実施形態の側方励起光ファイバ91は、クラッド12内にコア11が配置された光ファイバである。側方励起光ファイバ91を構成する光ファイバは、任意の光ファイバでありうるが、本実施形態ではエルビウムの添加されているEDF(Erbium-Doped Fiber)の例を示す。
図1に、本開示の側方励起光ファイバの構成例を示す。本実施形態では、本開示の基本的な構造について説明する。本実施形態の側方励起光ファイバ91は、クラッド12内にコア11が配置された光ファイバである。側方励起光ファイバ91を構成する光ファイバは、任意の光ファイバでありうるが、本実施形態ではエルビウムの添加されているEDF(Erbium-Doped Fiber)の例を示す。
本実施形態の側方励起光ファイバ91は、光ファイバの側面から内部にかけて光導波路13が配置されており、側方励起光ファイバ91の側面に配置されている光導波路13の入射端13Iから前記光ファイバの内部に励起光が入射可能になっている。
ここで、光導波路13は、フェムト秒レーザなどのレーザ加工を用いて屈折率を局所的に変調することで形成することができる(例えば、非特許文献3参照。)。このため、光ファイバの任意の位置に光導波路13を設けることで、側方励起光ファイバ91を構成することができる。
光導波路13の入射端13Iは、クラッド12の側面に配置されている。このため、励起光を出射する光ファイバ92をクラッド12の側面に近づけることで、光導波路13に励起光を入射することができる。ここで、光ファイバ92は、光導波路13に入射する機構の一例であり、クラッド22内にコア21が配置され、コア21を励起光が伝搬可能な光ファイバである。
光導波路13の出射端13Oは、励起の必要な任意の位置に配置される。このため、本開示の側方励起光ファイバ91は、光ファイバ外から励起の必要な任意の位置に直接かつ的確に励起光を注入することができる。

なお、本実施形態ではコア11の長手方向の1か所のみに励起光を入射する構成例を示したが、本開示はこれに限定されない。例えば、コア11の長手方向の異なる位置に複数の光導波路13を配置し、複数の光導波路13の少なくともいずれかから励起光を入射してもよい。
このように、本開示は、希土類添加ファイバ中に光導波路13を作製し、光ファイバ側面から励起光を光ファイバ内に直接入射することで励起光を高効率に励振することができる。したがって、本開示は、希土類添加ファイバ内に直接励起光が入射可能になるので、小型で接続点もなく、信号光への影響を抑えながら、光ファイバ中の任意の位置に励起光を供給することができる。

図4に、本開示の側方励起光ファイバ91の構成例を示す。本実施形態では、クラッド励起型の増幅用光ファイバへの適用例について説明する。本実施形態では、光導波路13の出射端13Oがクラッド12中に配置されている。これにより、クラッド励起型の希土類添加ファイバであっても、コア11中を伝搬する信号光を増幅することができる。
なお、クラッド12は、励起光を導波させるため、屈折率の低いガラスもしくは紫外線硬化樹脂で覆われているものを用いることができる。また、本実施形態では、2本のコアを有するマルチコアの例を示したが、コアの数は1以上の任意の数であり、例えばシングルコアであってもよい。
(第5の実施形態)
本実施形態では、双方向励起構造への適用例を示す。図5に、本開示の側方励起光ファイバの構成例を示す。本実施形態では、EDF90の両端に側方励起光ファイバ91A及び91Bが配置されている。側方励起光ファイバ91A及び91Bは、それぞれ、光導波路13A及び13Bを備え、波長980nmや1480nm等のEDF90を励起可能な波長を出力する励起光源94A及び94Bと接続されている。このように、本開示は、EDF90の両側に光導波路13A及び13Bを設けることで、双方向励起を実現することができる。
本実施形態では、双方向励起構造への適用例を示す。図5に、本開示の側方励起光ファイバの構成例を示す。本実施形態では、EDF90の両端に側方励起光ファイバ91A及び91Bが配置されている。側方励起光ファイバ91A及び91Bは、それぞれ、光導波路13A及び13Bを備え、波長980nmや1480nm等のEDF90を励起可能な波長を出力する励起光源94A及び94Bと接続されている。このように、本開示は、EDF90の両側に光導波路13A及び13Bを設けることで、双方向励起を実現することができる。
光導波路13A及び13Bは、EDF90に励起光を入射可能な任意の構成を採用することができる。例えば、EDF90のうちの信号光が入射される入射側に配置されている光導波路13Aは、励起光源94Aからの励起光を、EDF90の出射側に向けて合波する。EDF90のうちの信号光が出力される出射側に配置されている光導波路13Bは、励起光源94Bからの励起光を、EDF90の入射側に向けて合波する。
本実施形態では、前段の光導波路13Aでは第2の実施形態に記載の1つの励起光源から強い励起光パワーで増幅し、後段の光導波路13Bで第3の実施形態に記載のコア間偏差調整用の励起光の入射構造を組み合わせてもよい。これにより、本実施形態は効率的にEDF90の増幅とコア間偏差の調整ができる。
側方励起光ファイバ91A及び91Bは、EDF90の一部に光導波路13A及び13Bを形成することで、構成することができる。ただし、本開示はこれに限定されない。例えば、側方励起光ファイバ91A及び91Bは、希土類の添加されていない光に光導波路13A及び13Bを形成したものであってもよい。この場合、側方励起光ファイバ91A及び91BをEDF90に接続することで、側方励起光ファイバ91A及び91BからEDF90に励起光を入射することができる。このような構成であっても、小型かつ接続点のない構成でEDF90に励起光が入射可能になる。
(第6の実施形態)
本実施形態では、光増幅器への適用例を示す。図6に、本開示の光増幅システムの構成例を示す。本開示の光増幅システムは、アイソレータ95A、提案構造を有する本開示の側方励起光ファイバ91、数m~30m程度のEDF90、アイソレータ95Bが順に接続されている。側方励起光ファイバ91は、波長980nmや1480nm等のエルビウムを励起可能な波長を出力する励起光源94と接続されている。
本実施形態では、光増幅器への適用例を示す。図6に、本開示の光増幅システムの構成例を示す。本開示の光増幅システムは、アイソレータ95A、提案構造を有する本開示の側方励起光ファイバ91、数m~30m程度のEDF90、アイソレータ95Bが順に接続されている。側方励起光ファイバ91は、波長980nmや1480nm等のエルビウムを励起可能な波長を出力する励起光源94と接続されている。
励起光源94からの励起光が側方励起光ファイバ91に入射されると、側方励起光ファイバ91に入射された励起光はそのままEDF90に入射される。このため、本実施形態の光増幅器は、波長合波器を用いずに励起光をEDF90に入射することができる。
なお、上述の実施形態では側方励起光ファイバ91のコア数が1又は2の例を示したが、本開示のコア数は限定されず、2以上の任意の数のコアを有するマルチコアファイバであってもよい。また、側方励起光ファイバ91の伝搬モードはSMFであってもよいし、2以上のモードを伝搬可能なマルチモードファイバであってもよい。また、上述の実施形態では、側方励起光ファイバ91に添加する希土類がエルビウムの例を示したが、本開示はこれに限定されず、ツリウム、イットリビウム、プラセオジウム、ネオジウムのいずれかであってもよい。

- クラッド内に1つ以上のコアを有する光ファイバであって、
前記光ファイバの側面から内部にかけて光導波路が配置されており、
前記光ファイバの側面に配置されている前記光導波路の入射端から励起光が入射可能であることを特徴とする、
側方励起光ファイバ。 - 前記光導波路の出射端が前記側方励起光ファイバ内のコアに近接しており、
前記出射端から出力された励起光を前記コアに合波することを特徴とする、
