Definitions
- the present disclosure relates to a modular support device for a knee brace, a knee brace comprising such a modular support device and a method of manufacturing a modular support device.
- a knee brace is an externally applied device that can support and stabilize a knee, for example an injured knee.
- knee braces can help to stabilize a knee that has suffered from ligament damage.
- Important aspects for knee-braces is that they provide a stable support for the knee while allowing efficient range of motion and comfortability for a user wearing the knee brace.
- the present disclosure provides a modular support device for a knee brace comprising a base unit having a top surface and a bottom surface. Further, the device comprises an at least partially enclosed receptacle having a first surface and a second surface, wherein a distance between said first and second surface is adjustable by an adjustment mechanism of said receptacle. Moreover, the top surface and/or said second surface comprises a fastening portion arranged to detachably attach to a pad unit. Furthermore, the base unit being rotatably connected to said receptacle by a rotating means, wherein one of the base unit and the receptacle is rotatable with respect to the other about a rotational axis of said rotating means.
- the modular support device may preferably be for insertion in-between a knee-brace and the knee of a user.
- the second surface may be arranged to face/contact the knee brace and the top surface may be arranged to face/contact the knee of a user.
- An advantage of the support device of the present disclosure is that a user can selectively control the support of the knee brace, thus it will provide optimal comfort and stability based on a user's own preferences. Moreover, the knee brace does not hamper the movement of the knee even though it is a modular add-on to a knee brace. Accordingly, the knee brace provides increased stability to the knee based on user-preference while maintaining movement of the knee joint.
- the rotating means is preferably an annular ball bearing, which is convenient to implement while providing efficient movement between the knee of the user and the knee brace.
- the rotating means provides a swivel function of the base unit relative the receptacle so that the support device does not hamper/restrict the range of motion of a user.
- the rotating means may however be other type of rotating means.
- the rotating means may be in the form of any suitable bearing element, preferably radial bearing elements comprising but not limited to cylindrical bearings, roller bearings or other suitable type of bearings.
- One of said receptacle and said base unit may comprise a receiving cavity (formed in e.g., said bottom or first surface), wherein the other one of said base unit and said receptacle comprises a shaft extending vertically from a central portion thereof (i.e. from a central part of said surface), the receiving cavity being arranged to receive said shaft, in order to, by said rotating means allow rotation of said base unit relative said receptacle.
- the first surface of said receptacle may comprise a receiving cavity, wherein said base unit further comprises a shaft extending vertically from a central portion of said bottom surface of said base unit.
- the receiving cavity being arranged to receive said shaft, in order to, by said rotating means allow rotation of said base unit relative said receptacle.
- An advantage of this is that the modular support device is convenient in its assembly without compromising function.
- the rotating means is an annular ball bearing element, wherein an outer ring of said annular ball bearing element is fixedly attached to said receptacle, wherein an inner ring of said annular ball bearing element is connected to said shaft, wherein one of the outer ring and the inner ring rotates with respect to the other.
- the rotating means may be any other suitable type of radial bearings and is not limited to an annular ball bearing element.
- the ball bearing attachment does not result in any increase in size or considerable increase in the weight of the modular support device, while supporting movement of the knee in an efficient manner.
- the rotating means is not restricted to an annular ball bearing and may be any other type of means that allow rotation of the base unit relative the receptacle.
- the receptacle may comprise a first and a second receptacle part, the first part comprising said first surface and the second part comprising said second surface, said first part comprising a first enclosed wall and second part comprising a second enclosed wall, wherein said adjustment mechanism is provided by an adjustable engagement of (e.g. interior) threads on said first wall and (e.g. exterior) threads on said second wall.
- the fastening portion may be a hook-and-loop fastening portion, advantageously providing an efficient attachment and detaching of the pad.
- the rotating means may be secured to said receiving cavity by an interference fit mechanism.
- Such a mechanism allows the rotating means to fulfil its function while maintaining a low weight on said device and providing a convenient assembly.
- the receptacle may comprise a flange having an opening being coaxially arranged with respect to said receiving cavity, said flange being arranged to secure said rotating means to said receptacle, said flange being positioned at a surface opposing said first surface.
- the flange therefore provides a robust attachment of the rotating means to the receptacle, thereby reducing the risk of the rotating means unwantedly detaching from said receptacle.
- the receptacle may form an enclosed structure having an inner volume in between said first and second surface, wherein said rotating means is located within said inner volume, wherein said first surface of said receptacle faces said bottom surface of said base unit, and said pad unit is arranged to be attached to said fastening portion of said top surface of said base unit.
- the shaft and the rotating means are located within said inner volume.
- An advantage of this is that the different constructional parts (i.e. rotating means) of the device are protected from dust, dirt and damage. Moreover, the constructional parts are hidden so to not be visible from an exterior of the device.
- the shaft may be attached to the receptacle by a locking nut.
- a knee brace comprising a support device comprising a base unit having a top surface and a bottom surface and an at least partially enclosed receptacle having a first surface and a second surface. Further, a distance between said first and second surface is adjustable by an adjustment mechanism of said receptacle. Further, the top surface or said second surface comprises a fastening portion arranged to detachably receive a pad unit. Moreover, the base unit is rotatably connected to said receptacle by a rotating means, wherein one of the base unit and the receptacle is rotatable with respect to the other about a rotational axis of said rotating means.
- the support device is preferably removably mounted to said knee-brace.
- the support device is integral with said knee-brace.
- the support device may be the support device in accordance with any aspect of the present disclosure.
- the knee brace comprises a first and a second support device arranged to support opposing sides of a knee of a user.
