Definitions

  • This invention relates to a pouch composition, a pouch product comprising said pouch composition in a pouch and a method of manufacturing said pouch composition.
  • Nicotine consumption by smoking has traditionally been the main method of nicotine delivery.
  • smoking as a method of nicotine delivery is being challenged by several alternative systems for nicotine deliv- ery.
  • pouch products containing pouch compositions containing nicotine, also known as snus.
  • These pouch products may vary in type and composition depending on e.g. market of sale and local preferences or regulations.
  • the pouch product is used by placing the pouch in the mouth, preferably between gum and upper lip, where it is left for a desired amount of time delivering nicotine. Nicotine is absorbed by the mucous in the mouth.
  • a method for producing a pouch composition, a pouch product and a pouch composition are provided which in use enable optimized transferal of an active ingredient via the mucous membrane.
  • a pouch product and a pouch composition are pro- vided which in use result in reduced irritation of gums and/or mucous membrane.
  • a pouch product and a pouch composition are provided which in use have an improved feel for the user.
  • a long-lasting flavour with a rapid nicotine delivery' is provided.
  • a quick flavour release in combination with a long- lasting nicotine delivery' is provided.
  • a method to prevent degradation of nicotine is provided.
  • a method for producing a pouch composi- tion comprising one or more sugar alcohols in a total amount of 0 - 22 wt%, one or more intense sweeteners in a total amount of 0 - 5 wt%, water in an amount of 8 - 51 wt%, at least one texturizing agent in a total amount of 0,3 - 5 wt%, at least one water insoluble fibre, nicotine, wherein the method comprises the steps of i.
  • nicotine, water and flavour are mixed in a liquid mixture which is followingly mixed with the dry mix an even distribution of flavour, water and nicotine in the dry mix is achieved, thereby avoiding that flavour and nicotine are not distributed in a sim- ilar manner throughout the obtained pouch composition. This is especially important as flavours at least partly may be added to mask the taste of nicotine.
  • an advantage of the pouch product provided by the present method is that the flavor may be evenly distributed throughout the entire fiber so the user will have a pre- sent taste of flavor during the whole period of usage of a pouch containing the pouch product.
  • an active ingredient such as nicotine alone or in combination with any other active ingredients mentioned herein.
  • This active ingredient may have a release through a longer period which is an advantage for active ingredients that has a bad taste or that needs to be delivered more slowly due to the effect of the active ingredient.
  • An advantage of adding nicotine, water and flavour in a combined liquid mixture is that the taste of the active ingredient(s) may permanently be masked by the flavor because there is simultaneous release of the flavor and the active ingredient that is evenly dis- tributed throughout the particle.
  • nicotine, water and flavour are provided as more than one liquid mixture, it may be possible to control where the majority of nicotine is in the fibres relative to the majority of flavors. This can be controlled by adding liquid mixtures one after another. For ex- ample, first adding a liquid nicotine mixture and then a liquid flavor mixture may result in a product which provides a quick release of flavors in use which will cover nicotine taste in the beginning of using the snus. Alternatively, adding flavors first and then nic- otine may result in a product which provides a quicker delivery of nicotine in the be- ginning of use and then more long-lasting flavours.
  • the relative position of nicotine and flavor in the none water-soluble particles may be controlled so that the centre of each fibre has a large concentration of flavours and the nicotine will be mainly at the surface. This may provide a long-lasting flavour with a rapid nicotine delivery.
  • the relative position of nicotine and flavor in the none-water soluble par- ticles may be controlled so the centre of the fibres has a large concentration of nicotine, and the flavour will be mainly in the surface of the fibres. This may provide a quick flavour release in combination with a long-lasting nicotine delivery.
  • Advantages of adding nicotine in one liquid mixture and flavor in a second liquid mix- ture may as described above be that it is possible to control how nicotine and flavor is absorbed in the fibers and thereby control the release of nicotine and flavors of the product in use.
  • the method may further comprise steps of injecting at least one of the liquid mixtures in the mixer by compressed nitrogene and/or having purge flows by seals in the mixer with compressed nitrogene in order to prevent degradation of nicotine by oxygen both during mixing and when the fibres are stored later in nitrogen atmosphere.
  • the method may in addition or alternatively comprise steps of removing oxygen bysuction or vacuum in one or more parts of the process.
  • This may have the advantage that, when liquids containing oxygen, eg. Propane- 1,2, 3 -triol, Propane-1, 2-diol and/or Butan- 1,3 -diol, Water is mixed with nicotine and the dissolved oxygen starts a degra- dation process, the freed excess oxygen may be removed by the suction and/or vacuum thereby making the product more stable.

  • F1 Composition F1 is based on wheat fibers and free base nicotine, texturizing agent is Arabica Gum. It is a sweet product for maximum delivery of flavor and nicotine.
  • Composition F2 is based on MCC (micro crystalline cellulose) fibers and nicotine based on freebase nicotine mixed with an ion exchange resin.
  • Texturizing agent is Arabica Gum. It is a sweet product for maximum delivery of flavor and a slow release of nicotine. The slow release of nicotine provides a better lifetime for the product be- cause the nicotine does not evaporate, and it gives an overall better nicotine uptake because the nicotine is slowly going to the oral mucosa. This also helps less nicotine to enter the stomach with can create stomach problems for users.
  • Composition F3 is based on sea wheat fibers and free base nicotine in VG.
  • the 20 nicotine in VG makes nicotine safer to handle and it does not so easy get oxidated by- air because it is diluted.
  • Texturizing gent is Guar Gum.
  • Guar Gum is a bit more jelly like than Arabica Gum and creates a smooth feeling outside the pouch when used orally. It is a sweet product for maximum delivery’ of flavor and nicotine.
  • Composition F4 is based on bamboo fibers and free nicotine salt.
  • Texturizing agent is Sodium Alginate in combination with a free nicotine salt. Free nicotine salts are more acidic than free base nicotine, therefor sodium carbonate is added ad pH adjusting agent. Free nicotine salts generally enter the body more through the throat than the upper oral mucosa. This is a different feeling that some users prefer when using snuff
  • Composition F5 is based on wheat fibers and free base nicotine.
  • Texturizing agent is Agar that is known not be especially white. It is a salty product that together with ammoniumchloride provides maximum nicotine delivery'.
  • Composition F6 is based on w’heat fibers and free base nicotine.
  • Texturizing agent is Guar Gum that is known to provide a moist feeling outside on the snuff. It is a salty product that together with ammoniumchloride provides maximum nicotine delivery .
  • Composition F7 is based on wheat fibers and free base nicotine. Tobacco is added to give a tobacco flavor and because some countries insist on tobacco in the snuff. Tex- turizing agent is Guar Gum that is known to provide a moist feeling outside on the snuff. It is a salty product that together with ammoniumchloride provides maximum nicotine delivery'. Table I
  • compositions in II and III are pouch compositions with a low water content (may be named intermediate pouch compositions) i.e. pouch composition intended to be submitted to a hydration step pref- erably after the pouch composition has been added to a pouch.
  • Table II A salty formulation with 16mg nicotine pr 100g: Table III A sweet formulation with 20mg nicotine pr 100g:
